Annual press conference 2014 in Petaling Jaya Bosch maintains steady momentum in Malaysia Local development of innovative technologies for the global market

Malaysia remains Bosch’s third-largest revenue contributor within Southeast Asia
Connected technologies to increase automotive safety
Bosch expects worldwide sales growth of between 3 to 5 percent in 2014

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia, 11 June, 2014 – Malaysia continues to be the third-largest revenue contributor within Southeast Asia for Bosch, a leading global supplier of technology and services. Total net sales in the country increased by 20 percent to RM 2.9 billion (698 million euros) in 2013. This figure includes sales of non-consolidated companies and internal deliveries to other Bosch companies. Consolidated sales to third parties in the local market registered a slight dip compared to 2012, and came to RM 485 million (116 million euros). This was mainly due to extraordinary effects such as increased austerity that cools spending by consumers and businesses.

Bosch’s manpower in Malaysia increased by around 3 percent to almost 2,100 employees over the course of 2013, constituting the largest associate number in Southeast Asia with over 45 percent.

(L-R) Michael Goh, Head of Department for Automotive Aftermarket, Martin Hayes, President of Bosch Southeast Asia and Managing Director of Bosch Malaysia and Dr. Harald Dirsch, commercial managing director of Bosch’s Car Multimedia division in Malaysia showcasing the locally produced eCall Emergency Calling System, an innovative emergency call system which is incorporated into vehicles utilising the same sensors which trigger the deployment of safety airbags.

“Bosch remains on the course of growth in Malaysia. Our business divisions developed positively, we expect demand for our products and services to increase as purchasing power across the Southeast Asia region grows. Our figures for the first quarter of 2014 in Malaysia are very encouraging and our sales in the local market are expected to rise accordingly this year,” said Martin Hayes, president of Bosch Southeast Asia and managing director of Bosch Malaysia.

In 2013, the Thermotechnology division more than doubled its sales in Malaysia due to project developments within the food and beverage, oleochemical, and latex industries. The Power Tools, Automotive Aftermarket, and Drive and Control Technology divisions progressed at a steady pace. The Car Multimedia division saw a year-on-year increase of over 40 percent in sales, largely attributed to increasing global demand for in-car infotainment technologies.

Technologies developed and manufactured in Malaysia for global market
“Our business divisions are delivering a wide portfolio of innovative products and solutions invented for life for the Malaysian market. Additionally, Malaysia is one of our key locations in Asia to develop world-class technologies for both the local and global markets,” said Martin Hayes.

The Connectivity Control Unit (CCU), for example, is an integral module for the eCall system developed by the Car Multimedia manufacturing plant in Penang which is already available on the European market. Based on pan-European standards, eCall is an innovative emergency system that transmits data such as location and time to centralised monitoring centres when an accident occurs. These centres then relay critical information that are triggered by sensors within the vehicle to emergency rescue services, thus reducing their response times to the scene of accident, especially in rural areas.

“Bosch is at the forefront of automotive safety with the Internet of Things (IoT), such as connecting vehicles onto the internet, which eCall is an example for,” said Hayes. “Malaysia’s landscape is well-suited to deploy these connected technologies. Coupled with accident preventive equipment in the vehicle such as Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Electronic Stability Program® (ESP), the technologies will save lives by increasing driving safety and reducing the number of accident fatalities.”

In its Power Tools manufacturing plant in Penang, Bosch develops and produces its Rangefinder series for the global market which consists of precision measurement tools equipped with laser technology. Production reached close to one million units in 2013 and is expected to double in 2014.

Asia remains important growth market for Bosch
In Asia Pacific, Bosch achieved sales growth of 5.8 percent (13.8 percent after adjusting for exchange-rate effects) to roughly RM 46.4 billion (11.1 billion euros). Especially in the Chinese growth market, demand for automotive and industrial technologies picked up significantly over the course of the year.

In Southeast Asia, Bosch closed its 2013 fiscal year at RM 2.6 billion (629 million euros) in consolidated sales on the domestic market, remaining at a similar level from the year before. The total net sales of RM 5.8 billion (1.4 billion euros), which includes deliveries to other Bosch companies, amounted to a year-on-year increase of almost 10 percent. Southeast Asia is currently one of the most important growth regions for Bosch. Over the past several years, the company entered the emerging countries of Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar, and expanded its presence in Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines.

Bosch Group business outlook for 2014
Bosch expects sales to grow by between 3 and 5 percent in 2014 worldwide. Internet-enabled products and internet-based services are one of the focal points of the company's future business. With its hardware know-how and broad technological expertise, the supplier of technology and services is well prepared to move into this direction. “Bosch’s traditional strengths – our innovative strength, high standard of quality, global presence, and the integrative force of our corporate culture – are also valuable in the connected world,” said Dr. Volkmar Denner, the Bosch CEO. Moreover, Bosch is global market leader in the area of micromechanical sensors (MEMS), a key technology when it comes to networking things on the internet. Sensors enable a new form of technical assistance in day-to-day life – in automated driving, for example, or the smart home. Bosch’s strategic objective is to create solutions for connected mobility, connected manufacturing, connected energy systems, and connected buildings.

AIMS and INTI Partner to Drive More Industry-Relevant Academia

Data centre professionals to be involved in learning programmes and industry projects at INTI; Internship and job opportunities to be created with leading data centre player for graduates

KUALA LUMPUR, 9 June, 2014 – The AIMS Group (AIMS) and INTI International University & Colleges (INTI) today announced a joint partnership under the ‘INTI Corporate Partner’ (ICP) initiative to provide INTI students with more industry-specific programmes that are crucial to prepare them for their future career and boost their employability.

CEO of AIMS Group, Chiew Kok Hin, shares that while 4.4 million IT jobs will be created globally by 2015 to support the growth of big data, unfortunately only one-third of the jobs will be filled.

He says, “Gartner’s research finding strongly indicates that one of the current global problems is the lack of relevant talents, as students are not equipped with the right set of industry-specific skills.

“And this is precisely why AIMS has embarked on this partnership with INTI, which is to contribute our industry expertise by providing our input into academic programmes, to ensure that they are industry-relevant and are in tandem with changes that affect the industry.”

AIMS - one of the leading carrier-neutral data centres in Malaysia and South East Asia - will be working with INTI – an education establishment that has been at the forefront of higher education for over two decades in the country – to share their industry expertise and knowledge, in order to ensure that INTI provides the latest industry-relevant curriculum. AIMS will also provide guest speakers from senior management level, sponsor specific employer projects and offer INTI students’ internship opportunities at AIMS that can potentially lead to job offers.

“At the same time, this partnership with INTI, provides a platform for AIMS employees to ‘give back to the society’ by taking part in the education process by becoming guest speakers. INTI students will definitely benefit from this as they will get first-hand knowledge from corporate professionals who are actively involved in the operations of the data centre and outsourcing industry,” he adds.

Jeffery Goh, Chief Executive of INTI International College Kuala Lumpur (IICKL) says, “We are incredibly pleased with our partnership with AIMS, as this is in line with one of the pillars of our mission, which is to provide the most innovative education. By providing academic programmes which are vetted by industry players, we are putting them in touch with current industry trends and issues, which are invaluable learnings that will give them the edge over their peers.”

“Our hope is to be able to mould a generation of highly-skilled employees from INTI. At the same time, we wish to provide an effective placement system for graduates that meet the exact requirements of the local outsourcing and data centre industry by way of internship opportunities at AIMS, leading on to full-fledged careers in this specialised ICT field,” explains Chiew.

This AIMS-INTI partnership will also benefit AIMS employees who will have the opportunity to mould the minds of future leaders by being guest speakers and sharing real-world challenges so students can start thinking about how to apply their academic knowledge to solve these issues.

“On the other hand, INTI will also offer scholarships as well as fee rebates for AIMS employees who want to further their studies at INTI. This will encourage a culture of continuous learning amongst AIMS employees to keep up with specialised knowledge,” adds Chiew.

“We hope that more corporate partners, such as AIMS, will come forward to collaborate with us in order to provide our students with the right skillsets and competencies that are critical to the growth and future of our nation,” Goh ends.

Microsoft Malaysia’s NGO Connection Day Sees Local and International NGOs Use Latest Technologies to Positively Impact Lives

KUALA LUMPUR, 4 June 2014 – Microsoft, through its NGO Connection Day, reiterated its commitment to support the capacity building of non-profit organizations in Malaysia through 21st century technology. Over 130 participants from various local and international NGOs were able to access a multitude of tools and resources at this one-day event - including workshops and keynote sessions delivered by experienced NGO practitioners and Microsoft technology experts - which equips these nonprofits with the technology knowledge, community, and resources they need to fulfill their respective missions.

Speaking at the event, Carlos Lacerda, Managing Director of Microsoft Malaysia said that NGOs play an important role in advancing the nation’s efforts in becoming a developed nation, “Nonprofits are vital to the development of our nation’s youth, families and communities, all of which are active contributors to a highly advanced human capital. Microsoft believes in the important roles these organizations play, and by offering them access to useful software, we are able to provide meaningful contributions to organizations that are actively changing the world in their communities, thereby extending their respective causes.”

Carlos Lacerda, Managing Director, Microsoft Malaysia delivering keynote address to NGO representatives present at NGO Connection Day today.

Lacerda continued by explaining that the empowerment of NGOs requires collaboration among stakeholders across all sectors. He said that private corporations, government agencies and communities themselves need to work together to be an extension of the good work these NGOs are doing, “We believe that NGOs need all the support they can get, regardless of where the support is coming from. This is precisely why we’re partnered with TechSoup Global to bring NGO Connection Day to the masses. Partnering with TechSoup Global enables us to reach more organizations around the world than we ever could alone. The TechSoup Global partner network helps Microsoft reach more than 60,000 nonprofit organizations annually with over $800 million worth in software grants.”

Since 2005, Microsoft has hosted NGO Connection Day throughout the world to raise awareness and help build IT capacity in the NGO sector. The company has run approximately 100 of these events globally every year, with the primary focus in assisting these organizations better achieve their goals and objectives. In Malaysia alone, over RM10.5million in cash and software grants have been awarded to Malaysian NGOs since 2004.
Microsoft and local NGOs come together at NGO Connection Day.

Local NGOs Use Technology to Empower Future Generations, Build Communities and Strengthen Families

Local NGO Persatuan Kebajikan Generasi Gemilang Kuala Lumpur dan Selangor, better known as Generasi Gemilang, was a recent recipient of Microsoft’s cash and software grants. The grant, which totaled $109,724.00, is the largest sum awarded by YouthSpark (a Microsoft initiative designed to create opportunities and empower millions of young people worldwide through partnerships with governments, NGOs and businesses) to a local NGO to date. Generasi Gemilang, a nonprofit welfare organization committed to investing in the lives of future generations and strengthening families, was established in 2010, and have since impacted 37,000 Malaysian lives.

“Its Head of Strategic Alliances, Teri Choong explained how technology impacts what they do, “At Generasi Gemilang, our heart is for the next generation and their families. As such, we’ve focused our attention to four main pillars – community development, youth development, counselling and care, and strategic alliances, all of which serve to build human capital for a better tomorrow. At the heart of all this, technology is crucial to the operation and execution of our mission. Technology helps us achieve operational efficiency as well as mitigate impacts from manpower and financial resource constraints. The recent cash and software grant from Microsoft was exactly what we needed to take our cause to the next level.”
(L-R) Ng Kian Oui, Senior IT Executive, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation Malaysia; Carlos Lacerda, Managing Director, Microsoft Malaysia; and Teri Choong, Head of Strategic Alliances, Generasi Gemilang.

Yet another NGO which leveraged Microsoft’s cash and software grants was international charitable organization, The Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation (“Tzu Chi”). Tzu Chi, which literally means "Compassionate Relief", opened its first branch in Malaysia in 1993 and is now one of Malaysia’s largest NGO. With 40 offices locally, Tzu Chi employs 500 permanent staff, who - with 20,000 volunteers - deliver a wide range of humanitarian, medical, educational and welfare programs.

In early 2013, Tzu Chi leveraged a special licensing arrangement with Microsoft and standardized its entire infrastructure on an up-to-date Microsoft stack, which included Windows, Microsoft Office, Microsoft Active Directory and Windows Server. “We chose Microsoft because all our permanent staff are familiar with Microsoft products, and the products are supported by Microsoft,” said Mr. Sio Kee Hong, Deputy Chief Executive Officer. “Also, IT specialists with Microsoft skills are relatively easy to find. This is essential if we want to improve reliability, and build and integrate tools ourselves.” According to Mr. Sio, Tzu Chi staff reacted very positively to their new IT environment. “We found everyone adapted very quickly, and I observe that everyone gets their work done more quickly. Greater efficiency means we provide much better services to the community.”
Sio Kee Hong, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu-Chi Foundation Malaysia KL-Selangor Branch.

Lacerda was delighted that NGOs like Generasi Gemilang and Tzu Chi were able to leverage the cash and software grants saying, “Microsoft believes that IT can change the world. We have donated more than US$400 million worth of software to over 30,000 NGOs and nonprofits globally in the past year to help them establish a stable and secure IT platform. Here in Malaysia, we are happy that NGOs including Generasi Gemilang and Tzu Chi will be able to achieve greater productivity while offloading the technical burden and costs of maintaining their IT infrastructure. These cost savings can then be allocated to enhance the core values of their social services in their communities.”

According to TechSoup 2012 Global Cloud Computing Survey (conducted among 10,500 nonprofits, charities, and NGOs from 88 countries on the use of technology hosted in the cloud at nonprofit organizations), 60 percent say that lack of knowledge is the biggest barrier to deploy cloud computing in their organizations. “They need more education and support to take full advantage of these benefits regarding costs, productivity and collaboration. Initiatives like today’s NGO Connection Day give them the opportunity to learn more about cloud computing from industry experts, share valuable knowledge and discuss best practices,” added Lacerda.

World Cup Brazil 2014: Tips for Using ATMs and Avoiding Credit Card Cloning

Petaling Jaya, 4 June 2014. If you still haven’t decided how you plan to pay your bills while you’re in Brazil – cash or credit card – it is high time to do so. Kaspersky Lab warns that Brazil has some of the most creative and active criminals specializing in credit card cloning. And, unfortunately, they love to target foreigners who don’t know how to protect their cards when withdrawing money from an ATM or paying for their drinks in a restaurant. But our experts have some useful tips to protect against the most common attacks on ATMs and point of sales (PoS) devices in Brazil.

Avoiding credit card cloning
PoS devices are very common in Brazil – according to the Brazilian Central Bank, credit and debit cards account for 70% of all payments in the country. Chip-and-PIN cards are accepted by almost all businesses, even by cab drivers.

Tips: despite some recent news about security flaws in this protocol, chip-and-PIN cards are still more secure and harder to clone than magnetic swipe cards. If you don’t already have this type of card, ask your bank if it’s possible to get one before you travel.
In Europe and North America, many people are in the habit of handing over their cards to staff in restaurants and stores. In Brazil, this can be dangerous.
Tips: please don’t do this – you’re presenting fraudsters with a golden opportunity to clone the card, and the temptation is inevitably too strong to resist. Ask the staff to bring the electronic payment terminal to you.
Be careful of chance encounters or accidents which might take your card out of reach for a moment. If it happens, check that the card you get back is really yours. If you have any doubts, report it immediately to the bank.

PoS and PIN-pad malware
So-called Chupa Cabra malware and Trojan-Spy.Win32.SPSniffer, a malware family with several variants developed in Brazil and seen in the wild since 2010, affects PoS and PIN-pad devices, both of which are very common in the country. These devices are connected to a computer via a USB or serial port to communicate with electronic funds transfer (EFT) software. The Trojan infects the computer and sniffs the data transmitted through these ports.

The PIN is encrypted as soon as it is entered, most commonly using triple DES encryption. But Track 1 data (credit card number, expiration date, service code and CVV) and the public chip data aren’t encrypted in the hardware of old and outdated devices. These are sent in plain text to the PC via USB or serial ports. Capturing this data is enough to clone a credit card.

Please keep a close eye on your credit card statement to check all transactions and inform your bank immediately if you see something suspicious.
Wherever possible try to pay using a wireless PoS device – they are a bit more secure than the older ones connected to serial or USB ports.

Using ATMs in Brazil
Brazil has 118 ATMs per 100,000 adults according to the World Bank, placing it ninth in the world in terms of ATM numbers. This presents lots of opportunities for fraudsters to install skimmers, also known as “Chupa Cabra” devices.
Tips: use your hand to cover the keypad while you enter your PIN, it is a great way to foil most skimmers, which tend to rely on hidden cameras.
If you see something that doesn’t look right, notify the bank or owner of the machine, and go somewhere else to withdraw your cash.

“Be cautious while using ATMs or paying with your credit card. Don’t forget that cybercriminals in Brazil perform their malicious schemes all the time. Even during the day you can see them hanging out, wearing flip-flops and beachwear while installing skimmers in a crowded bank. Also remember that it’s far more secure if your transactions happen right in front of you. Be careful of chance encounters or accidents, which might take your card out of reach for a moment. If that happens, check that the card you get back is really yours. If you have any doubts, immediately report the incident to the bank,” said Fabio Assolini, Senior Security Researcher with Kaspersky Lab’s Global Research & Analysis Team.

Nokia reshapes the telco industry

After completing the sale of its Devices and Services business to Microsoft on 25th April 2014, Nokia is reinventing its business with a three-pronged approach: Networks, HERE, and Technologies. While it’s no longer a manufacturer of mobile devices, its expertise in mobile broadband technology remains its core business proposition; a 2.7 billion Euro business as seen in its Q1 2014 interim report.

Nokia’s restructure allows the company to reposition itself as one of the world’s largest software companies, and to meet its goals as a leader in technologies for a world where everyone and everything is connected.

Nokia’s Networks business (previously known as Nokia Solutions and Networks) still serves more than 90 of the world’s 100 largest mobile operators, and is ranked second in telecommunications services and third in mobile radio. Networks has remained profitable, with 10 consecutive quarters of positive free cash flow, and is currently ranked as a ‘Leader’ for three years in a row by Gartner for LTE Network Infrastructure in 2014.

As an early leader in virtualisation and cloud technologies, Nokia has identified 10 key global trends that it believes will shape the telecommunications industry. In Malaysia, the key trends are: New spectrum and the growth of mobile data; mixed radio technologies; network sharing and consolidation; telco cloud and virtualisation; and data analytics with cognitive networks.

Operators in Malaysia are driving tremendous mobile data growth through LTE. On average, compounded growth rate of mobile data usage in Asia Pacific over a period of five years is 32 per cent, but with LTE, this could grow to more than 80 per cent, according to ABI Research March 2014 report.

Malaysia is a country with a mixed radio environment. With operators running 3G, HSUPA and LTE, Nokia’s flexible solutions will allow telcos to cater to the whole spectrum. It is also not uncommon for Malaysian operators to share their network and consolidate their operations, either through partnerships or acquisitions. For example, the recent purchase of P1 by Telekom Malaysia provides opportunities for telcos to look into at least three or four technology areas in the country. These flexible solutions let operators make full use of the spectrum in a mixed radio environment.

For network efficiency, telcos are also paying attention to the latest cloud innovations. The recent telco cloud solution provides more flexibility in the delivery of services and in exploring new business models. These are aspects that Malaysian telcos are currently evaluating, and will be a reality in the next two years. Data from these cognitive networks will also allow operators to deliver a more customised user experience and is a way to differentiate their offerings from the other operators.

Nokia recently revisited Mobile World Congress in Kuala Lumpur, and showcased its latest innovations geared to place operators at the very top of their game. Some of these innovations are:

1. Telco Cloud: Telcos in the Cloud
Continuous traffic growth and unpredictable traffic patterns are challenges in maintaining a quality network experience. At the same time, the capacity to provide a great network experience and implement new services quickly is extremely important to drive revenue.

Nokia’s Telco Cloud is a solution that combines Network Functions Virtualisation and Operations Support System that help operators prepare, implement and run their own telco clouds, and migrate existing telco services to cloud-based networks.

Nokia’s telco cloud is considered revolutionary in the sense that operators can now manage unanticipated data growth with elastic scaling of mobile networks. This solution reduces the total cost of ownership with standardised platforms and has a high level of automation.

2. Liquid Applications: Faster Services in Real Time
Retaining profitability while delivering superior quality services has always been the two main priorities for telcos. One of the ways Nokia assists telcos with this is with Liquid Applications. It works by plugging Nokia’s Radio Applications Cloud Server (RACS) into the standard IT middleware at a base station. The server taps into the base station’s existing capabilities, and extracts real-time network insights; allowing operators to rapidly move from problem identification to precisely pinpointing the cause of service degradation.

Liquid Applications enhances the user experience through acceleration with nearby content that can be delivered faster. This improves time-to-content and cuts download time by up to 80 per cent. Nokia’s Liquid Application also collects real-time data, and allow telcos to leverage that data and insight from their own network. With the necessary information, operators can offer their customers the best context-related and location-based services.

3. Customer Experience Management: Winning with Customers
According to Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission 2013 Digital Lifestyle Malaysia report, Malaysian mobile phone penetration increased to 143.4 per cent in 2013 from 128.7 per cent in 2012. This growing customer base and its demands for quality services will require a tried and tested customer management system.

Nokia’s Customer Experience Management (CEM) Umbrella Solutions is aimed at helping operators manage their customers’ experience through a user-friendly online portal. This CEM Umbrella Solution allows operators to access and share their network information across their organisation; allowing engineers to address customer issues from consumer reports and dashboards. Whenever mobile service is affected, engineers can drill down immediately to individual customer accounts and fix the problem.

4. Voice over VoLTE: Crystal Clear Connectivity
With more mobile devices equipped with LTE capabilities, more Malaysian telcos will start offering LTE services to consumers. Despite this shift to data-centric services, 70 per cent of telco revenues still rely on existing voice and SMS services.

Nokia’s Voice over LTE (VoLTE) fulfils the vision of mobile broadband over LTE with high quality voice, video and multimedia services. VoLTE with SRVCC (Single Radio Voice Call Continuity) also provides subscribers the flexibility to roam seamlessly between LTE and 3G areas without experiencing call drops.

A full integration of existing networks with Nokia’s VoLTE solution requires no drastic changes to the mobile voice network. Full voice service continuity with faster roll-out means that operators can continue their network upgrades without any down time.

Connectivity at its Core

As the world’s specialist in mobile broadband, Nokia’s Networks business will continue to invent new capabilities valuable to telcos and be at the forefront of mobile technology. Network’s focus will continue to provide telcos with efficient solutions with the intelligence to maximise value and run seamlessly.

Healthcare providers are migrating from large, independent stand-alone organizations into complex new ecosystems. Today’s provider organizations, affiliated physician groups, labs and others are involved in both the provisioning of care, and the collection of vast amounts of information from patients. Health Information Exchanges (HIEs) are evolving and are a more affordable means to transfer clinical information and other data.

The transition towards more patient-centric care and decentralized monitoring means providers, patients and payers need to access information that originates outside the hospital setting. The trends toward personalized medicine, prevention, and wellness means stakeholders need to connect information from various points within the healthcare value chain − including providers, laboratories, payers, and patients. The more this private information is opened to outside entities, the greater the chance that these systems can be compromised either intentionally or accidently.

“Healthcare providers can no longer afford to take security lightly. Only with security as the foundation can healthcare organizations build IT services and applications that meet the requirements of the business and healthcare mandates,” said Dato' Seri George Chang, Fortinet's Vice President for Southeast Asia & Hong Kong, adding that Fortinet’s solutions addresses the wide variety of security needs in the healthcare vertical.

Upcoming trends in a healthcare industries network
The major challenge to a healthcare provider’s network arises from the different business functions increasingly taking place in their network.

Allowing Patient and Provider Access to the Network
As contradictory as it sounds, healthcare providers are now looking for ways to increase the access doctors, vendors, and patients have to applications and the Internet. With new guarantees for patients regarding access to information and a focus on lowering costs through new initiatives like telemedicine, the entire healthcare center is driving towards a more collaborative environment where all parties have access to the information they need.

The most obvious security concern with this approach is ensuring that sensitive information like protected health information (PHI) and payment information is kept separate and secured from general Internet and network traffic. This requires encryption and wireless management technology coupled with traffic shaping technology to ensure that the appropriate treatment information is accessible and is always the top priority.

Increased Use of Clinical Informatics to Improve Workflow
Along with the increased collection and flow of data, healthcare organizations are constantly striving to improve workflow, both physical and information. Improved workflows equal lowered costs, happy and productive caregivers and an environment that allows improved patient safety and quality care. The key challenge from a security perspective is ensuring that only the required pieces of data are transferred and nothing more.

Increasingly Stringent Compliance Mandates
As a result of the increasingly sensitive data handled by the healthcare industry, regulatory requirements have been implemented to help increase the security of healthcare providers and associates as well as the data they protect. HIPAA and HITECH set up standards around protecting PHI.

Healthcare organizations also find themselves responsible for complying with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). PCI DSS provides broad requirements for securing personal non public information used on digital technology in retail systems.

Towards a secure health architecture
Healthcare service providers need to evaluate their security needs at four levels:

1. Management Level
Given the widely distributed nature of modern healthcare establishments, the ability to quickly modify and manage security appliances is essential.

2. Aggregation Level
The aggregation level is the destination for all data. Typically this is the hospital datacenter. Core security functions such as firewalling, application control and VPN termination take place at this level.

3. Business Associate Level
The individual clinic, lab, doctor’s office, or any business associate requires security and connectivity for a wide variety of functions including WiFi, voice, and traditional network connectivity. With the addition of consumer connectivity, each associate much also be able to provide security functions such as antimalware and application control.

4. Access Level
As healthcare organizations extend access to providers using tablets and to patients using mobile devices, ensuring secure access is critical.
With more patients getting their information and media through mobile devices, healthcare organisations understand that patients are managing their care through mobile devices and social media. For the healthcare provider, the challenges with social media revolve around maintaining compliance with regulatory mandates —ensuring no sensitive information is compromised. Other challenges around social media include keeping the network free from malware.

Healthcare as we know it is changing quickly. Healthcare providers must provide communication and collaboration platforms that allow seamless integration among the various stakeholders. These changes in information flow, along with an explosion of digital content that needs to be stored and shared, are driving the need for a secure, flexible and scalable IT platform through which providers, payers and health sciences can support collaboration and information exchange.

IDC Says UC&C Markets Continue Strong Growth and Shift of Market Focus is Obvious in Future Roadmap

KUALA LUMPUR, 3 June 2014 – The recent IDC’s Asia/Pacific Semiannual Collaborations and Video Tracker revealed market shares of major Unified Communications & Collaboration (UC&C) vendors in Southeast Asia have inched up 5.7% to US$221.2 million in 2H13 (second half of 2013), compared to 1H13 (first half of 2013). Other key findings include:

Factory revenue in 2013 hit US$430.8 million, or a slight 2.1% growth on a year-over-year (YoY) basis due to deterrent factors such as "as-a-service" (UCaaS) ,cloud-based and freemium offerings

Enterprise telephony continues to play an integral part of the UC&C market, dominating 42.8% of total revenues in 2H13, followed by enterprise collaboration apps (32%), contact center applications & equipments (14.7%) and enterprise videoconferencing solutions (10.6%)

Although enterprise telephony has recorded the largest proportion from the UC&C market, total market share has dwindled 7.8% compared to 2H12. This short fall was mainly caused by traditional PBX/ key system, analogue and digital phones where IP telephony market continues to propel its strong growth in the region with 6.1% YoY. On the contrary, enterprise collaboration apps, contact center and enterprise videoconferencing solutions have sparked with 2.5%, 1.8% and 3.7% growth respectively

"We see IP telephony will continue stemming in the region as traditional PBX/ key system will soon reach the end of its life cycle, companies will need to equip themselves to get ready to tap the upcoming ‘mega upgrade cycle’ such as IP hardware and IP PBX systems/ lines,” said Tan Hwee-Xian, Market Analyst, Communications, IDC Asia/Pacific. “There are continuing growing interest in the implementation of enterprise collaboration apps, videoconferencing and contact center solutions in the region. However, with widespread availability of "as-a-service" arriving in the marketplace, we are expecting more UCaaS offerings to appear in the market which will be sharpened up as a key UC trend, as observed in Singapore's market."

Breakdowns of UC&C Markets in Southeast Asia

Singapore – Largest revenue, US$56.14 million
Such mature market has declined 5.7% YoY due to proliferation of future workplace technology with cloud base, freemium and "as-a-service" offerings. 62% of enterprises deemed applicable to reduce spending on UC&C/ videoconferencing-related deployments, however perceived applicable to increase used of managed services and move part/(s) of on-premises deployment to hosted/utility-based service. Collaboration apps comprised the highest revenue with 44.1% from total UC&C market, followed by enterprise telephony (36.3%), enterprise videoconferencing solution (7.1%) and contact center solution (3.9%).

Malaysia – Second largest revenue, US$44.4 million
Enterprise telephony continues to be the largest revenue contributor (47.9%), followed by collaboration apps (30.8%), contact center (13.1%) and videoconferencing solution (8%). Despite the market has surged up 23.9% half-over-half (HoH), total UC market for 2013 has bogged down 9% compared to 2012 due to Malaysian 13th General Election which has plummeted UC&C market in 1H13 by 14.5% over the same period of time in 2012. Such drastic downward trajectory has affected 2013 market, causing last year’s market to be less stellar than it was in 2012.

Indonesia – Third largest revenue, US$39.9 million
Similar to Malaysia, enterprise telephony is the largest revenue contributor (46.8%), followed by collaboration apps (30.4%), videoconferencing solution (13.8%) and contact center solution (9%).

In terms of HoH comparison, 2H13 UC&C market has dropped 4.1%. This shortfall was caused by the weakening Rupiah which has once plummeted to over 12,000 per US dollar during its peak (lowest ever since 2009) and has caused both economic curse and windfall for local businesses. Festive season like Hari Raya Aidilfitri has also led to a low IT expenditure in 3Q13 and spurred across to 4Q13 with its lethargy exchange rates.  Despite the shortfall, the market has indicated a strong 9% YoY growth compared to 2H12, notably IP telephony market with a sharp 36% YoY growth, driven  by the presidential election that will be held in 2014 along with local elections which will spur the IP telephony market.

Philippines – US$38.9 million in revenue
UC&C continue to gain impetus in Philippines where it has sustained its stronghold as top contact center hub in Asia Pacific. Total UC&C market has accumulated up to US$38.9 million in 2H13, showing a 24.3% YoY growth, highest among all countries in Southeast Asia. Philippines has also experienced the most severe natural calamity last November with typhoon Haiyan, although the devastation was massive, it was concentrated in the central and eastern provinces where center of BPO in greater Manila was not affected. Enterprise telephony comprised the highest revenue share (40.8%), followed by contact center solution (28.7%), collaboration apps (23.4%) and videoconferencing solution (7.1%).

Thailand – US$32.1 million in revenue
Despite political crisis and economic recession in late 2013, Thailand UC&C market grew in terms of revenues, around 13.3% in 2H13 compared to the same period in 2012 and increased over the 1H13 by 12.8%. Enterprise telephony continues to be the largest revenue contributor in UC&C space (US$12.9 million), followed by collaboration apps (US$7.7million), contact center (US6.9 million) and videoconferencing solution (US$3 million). The political unrest has resulted in delay of many projects delivery, however, there were many deals for UC&C solutions that most key vendors closed in the 3Q13 which resulted in good market performance and has compensated for the slowdown in demand and shipments in 4Q13.

Vietnam – US$11.1 million in revenue
Vietnam is relatively small in UC&C market as total 2H13 has recorded US$11.1 million, representing 50.5% of total revenues generated throughout the year of 2013. The market has experienced 6% YoY growth compared to 2H13 with enterprise telephony continues to be the largest revenue contributor in UC&C space (49%), followed by collaboration apps (24.2%), videoconferencing (19.4%) and contact center solution (7.5%).

IDC is optimistic towards such emerging market as demands on UC&C remained at the high side with 70% of enterprises deemed "not applicable" to reduce spending on UC&C/ videoconferencing-related deployments. This implied that Vietnam will continue to invest on-premise UC&C/ videoconferencing related deployments.

"We believe UC&C industry will continue to grow in the region; however different markets will have different needs. Vendors and service providers, especially local providers should consider the needs of local market as well as their ICT budget when comes to future roadmap to offer the UC&C solutions that could cater the needs of different markets," added Tan.

IDC forecasts UC&C markets in Southeast Asia will worth US$650.6 million by 2018, up from US$433.6 million today. This marked 8.5% of Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR), although there are signs of market growth slowing down in traditional on-premise market in the region.
