Malaysia’s Internet traffic consumption last year showed biggest percentage jump in over a decade; Increase of over 50 percent as compared to in 2012
KUALA LUMPUR, 7 April 2014 – Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX) or also known as Persatuan Pengendali Internet Malaysia’, today released its latest statistics on the country’s Internet traffic consumption - that clearly shows the biggest annual percentage increase ever in over a decade.
MyIX Chairman, Chiew Kok Hin says, “In Year 2013, our statistics showed that Internet traffic in Malaysia increased by a whopping 51 per cent to a total amount of 349,277 Mbps, as compared to 230,631 Mbps in 2012.”
In specific, MyIX’s Internet traffic statistics revealed that the biggest differences were in the Year 2013 months of January, February, March and November – each recording an average between 75 to 80 per cent increase, as compared to the same months in Year 2012.
Over the entire of 2013, statistics showed that Internet consumption grew steadily over each passing month. In January, the nation’s Internet traffic stood at 22,511 Mbps – which is a 75 per cent increase as compared to 12,880 Mbps in January 2012. By November 2013, the highest usage for 2013 was recorded at 41,319 Mbps.
“2013 has been a great year for the Internet, here in Malaysia. While we have been seeing a steady annual increase in Internet usage among Malaysians in the last few years, the usage growth has simply multiplied beyond our expectations in 2013.”
“We believe that the reasons for this, co-relates back with several synergistic trends amongst Malaysian Internet users - such as the spike in the number of smart phones users; with the sudden boom of user access to social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram; as well as the jump in data messaging applications such as Whatsapp, WeChat, Viber, Line and more,” explains Chiew.
On the increase in smartphone users, IDC Research attributes this to the Malaysian government's Youth Communication Package (YCP) that offers a RM200 (US$61) rebate for the purchase of a smartphone for young adults aged 21-30 with a monthly income of RM3000 (US$916) or less.
This further encouraged mobile phone vendors to take advantage of the government incentive to introduce 25 new smartphones priced around RM600 into the market – and eventually contributing to the market share of sub-RM600 smartphones increasing from 24 per cent in the second half of 2012, to 39 per cent in the first half of 2013.
“Cheaper smartphones contribute in driving Internet accessibility worldwide, and we also see its impact here in Malaysia as Internet usage explodes. Together with MyIX’s recent Internet network infrastructure upgrade being completed, we can better support the Internet traffic increase by end-consumers in Malaysia,” ends Chiew.
MyIX Re-elects Its Committee at 3rd AGM.
Earlier in March 2014, MyIX also re-elected its latest committee at its 3rd AGM.
Chiew Kok Hin, who is also the CEO for the AIMS Group, was re-elected as the Chairman of MyIX for another two terms. He will be assisted by a new committee that comprises of the new Deputy Chairman, Lim Chee Meng, the Head of Core Network Engineering at Maxis Communications Bhd; Secretary, Wan Mohd Nizam, the General Manager of Celcom Axiata (M); Treasurer, Chew Choo Soon, CEO of MyKRIS Asia Sdn Bhd and an elected committee compromising representatives from Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd, Telekom Malaysia Berhad, TIME dotCom Berhad (TIME), Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, and Redtone-CNX Broadband Sdn Bhd.
“It is an honour to be re-elected by my peers and I look forward to work with the Committee to take MyIX into the next level – especially to attract more peering members both local and international of various categories; towards the end of achieving a world-class level of Internet connectivity and ecosystem for Malaysia,” ends Chiew.

MyIX Invests RM3.7 million for Infrastructure Upgrade
National Internet Exchange to boost up bandwidth capacity by 300 percent by December 2013 driven by 50 percent increase in local Internet traffic consumption
KUALA LUMPUR, 29 October 2013 – Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX) or also known as Persatuan Pengendali Internet Malaysia’, today announced that they will be investing up to RM3.7 million to increase the bandwidth capacity of its central nodes interconnection in Klang Valley, from 10 Giga bits per second (Gbps) to 40 Gbps.
Today this has grown to a staggering figure of 26 Gbps in combined traffic (as at June 2013), resulting in an 80 per cent capacity utilisation per leg of MyIX’s existing central node infrastructure. “This is the main driver why we are upgrading our infrastructure – which is approximately by 300 per cent more bandwidth capacity, to cope with the anticipated growth of the country’s Internet consumption over the next two years.”
In 2012 alone, MyIX recorded that local Internet traffic had increased by approximately 50 per cent with 149,889 Mbps recorded in the first half of 2013, as compared to 98,527 Mbps in the same period in 2012.
Chiew attributes this exponential growth to more social networking and smart phone usage, the digitization of Malaysian TV with the IPTV trend, video-on-demand, online gaming – all of which drives more digital content which flows through Internet network connections to these users.
“One of the key factors for data traffic growth is the increased number of people surfing on the Internet via mobile devices such as smart phones and tablets. In fact, the first experience for many young Malaysian users of the Internet is via these mobile devices. The Internet penetration level will continue to escalate in the next few years as smartphones bundled with attractive communication packages become more affordable for the average Malaysian,” he adds.
Keeping Traffic Domestic
MyIX is a non-profit organization set up in 2006 under the purview of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to oversee the operations of the national Internet traffic exchange to facilitate the mutual peering between local Internet Service Providers (ISPs) that enable a more efficient and cost-effective transmission of inter-ISP content.
“MyIX keeps the entire Internet traffic domestic, without having to travel overseas across long connection distance which adversely affects the Internet experience of local users. MyIX has definitely contributed significantly to making Internet connection cost much more affordable as ISPs can pass on their savings to their customers – who can also enjoy better experience when surfing, playing online games and file sharing. Voice and video applications that are latency-sensitive have also seen a visible usage improvement with overall higher quality Internet coverage in Malaysia,” shares Chiew.
Peering with global players
MyIX has also been working to peer directly with top global content providers and social media platforms worldwide such as Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft in order to improve the experience of the many Malaysians who access these popular sites.
Earlier this year, MyIX decided to peer with Facebook. Reason being that 13.3 million, or 45.5 per cent of the total population of Malaysia are Facebook users – putting the country at the 8th spot in Asia and 21st place worldwide in terms of country with highest Facebook account holders.
Currently there are 58 members registered with MyIX – which also practices a unique ‘open interconnection policy’ which differs from other global Internet exchanges that allow their member ISPs to choose who they want to peer with.

MyIX Peers with Three Global Internet Brands
Top international brands connect to MyIX for direct connectivity with ASEAN ISPs;
Faster Internet experience expected for MyIX members to improve their customer experience in business
KUALA LUMPUR, 7 February 2013- The operator of Malaysia’s sole neutral Internet Exchange, MyIX – also known as ‘Persatuan Pengendali Internet Malaysia’, today announces that top international brands including Amazon, Facebook and Microsoft have recently joined the country’s national Internet exchange as part of its existing peering network.
The biggest value from this development is an immediate improvement in connectivity between MyIX members – consisting of over 50 ISPs (Internet Service Providers) and Content Providers with the three said global Internet brands.
Due to the burst of mobility in this region, the adoption of smartphones, tablets and mobile data applications have seen a steady increase. Smartphones continue to fuel sales of mobile phones worldwide with sales of close to 170 million units by Q3 2012 (Source: Gartner). These numbers are predicted to rise higher and with it an increase in internet users worldwide.
“Thus it is very important for these top Internet brands to ensure their customers get the best user experience while managing the burst in traffic especially from Asia. The need for faster connectivity and functionality has made them choose MyIX to better serve their regional market.”
“In addition to improved performance and connectivity, they can also expect to see lower operational costs as they are now able to bypass longer and more expensive data routes internationally,” adds Chiew.
By leveraging MyIX as the main traffic ply route for its domestic Internet data, these brands local traffic is kept local within the country’s networks and this reduces the latency of “boomerang traffic effect” when in-country Internet data need to loop to foreign networks to access the target Internet content.
“MyIX will continue to explore more extensive direct peering partnerships global Internet brands so as to benefit our members via better performance of their managed ISP networks with lessen dependency on expensive international bandwidth links,” ends Chiew.
