Hacker Economics: Three Cost Effective Ways to Tackle Hackers

By Greg Bunt, Director of Security, APAC, Juniper Networks

When we think about criminal hackers, we picture a techie who lives and breathes code. The game player, puzzle solver, master of manipulation. But more recently, another picture comes to mind. When you get right down to it, hackers are people, too.

Too often, we focus on the technical side of online threats. We head straight down to the technique level of SQL injection, cross-site scripting (XSS), cross-site request forgery (CSRF), you name it. We think sessions, authorization, authentication, proxies, or query string manipulation. But we can tend too often to overlook the true root cause of the exploitation—which is less about the hack and more about the hacker.

Perhaps the time has come to start taking advantage of the human factor and to modify our perspective and perception. It's time to hit hackers where it hurts—and that's with their time and money. If there's one thing hackers don't like, it's dealing with tasks they perceive to be a waste of valuable time. And if there's one thing hackers usually don't have a lot of, it's patience. They want quick results, gain, and cash in their pockets.

So considering their economic motivation, what can we do? We can find ways to increase the time, effort and opportunity costs associated with compromising websites, data centers, and networks. We can employ an important, effective, and underutilized security tool, which is the ability to waste their time and devalue their efforts.

Based on first-hand intelligence on attacks aimed at our own infrastructure, we learned that there is a finite amount of time that most attackers will continue to attack a Web application before giving up.

Looking at the attackers who targeted several of our websites and applications, representative of a typical enterprise environment, revealed trends in how hackers approach attacking a website or data center. Some of the most telling trends are rooted in time:

-          Minutes. For a smaller site, which has fewer pages to attack, the average duration of attacks by 99.23 percent of attackers was 22 hours. However, when the mere 0.3 percent of attackers who hack for extended periods of time are removed, the average attack time dropped to only eight minutes per attacker. This indicates if you could frustrate the majority of attackers for more than eight minutes, you'd be able to stop nearly every attack and encourage the attacker to move on to other targets.

-          Hours. On another much larger site, the average duration of the attack was 11 hours and 52 minutes. Again, if you remove the longest of these attacks, which equated, again, to less than one percent of attackers, the average attack duration shrunk to three hours per attacker.

-          A day. There are a small number of attackers who are much more persistent in their pursuits. When compared with the shorter duration attackers, these more persistent folks also tend to launch larger volume attacks with more advanced attack techniques and much more sophisticated tools. Still, even a persistent sophisticated hacker will likely only spend one day attacking a site.

Collectively this demonstrates there is a clear threshold where attackers will move on to other targets if a company can protect its infrastructure for long enough. While the duration differs for each website and depends on the number of web pages, the sophistication of the site content, and the value of the data behind the site, the research still shows that if attackers are frustrated early on in the process, most will go elsewhere. Further, it allows us to focus our time and resources on the more persistent attacks, which tend to be the most devastating.

This can be done by denying instant gratification. In fact, prolong gratification for as long as possible. The key is getting hackers to give up. Find ways to increase the time, effort, and opportunity cost associated with the exploitation. Make them relinquish their quest. Make them realize their time is better spent elsewhere. Make them realise that your site is a losing proposition. Let ‘em cut their losses and move on.

One approach is to trick attackers into exposing themselves when they target a site, and finding ways to frustrate their progress by leading them to hack data that ultimately doesn't exist. This can include slowing connections to the server for the attacker, creating fake directories, simulating broken applications and flooding attacker scanning programs with information about vulnerabilities that don't exist.

This approach has other unintended but positive benefits to the broader community. Wasting the time of attackers means they have that many less hours in the day to attempt to hack others. The very thought puts a slight schadenfreude grin on my face. That isn't so wrong, now is it?

JUNIPER NETWORKS UNVEILS JUNOS PULSE APPCONNECT TO DELIVER SIMPLE PER-APP MOBILE SECURITY FROM APPLICATION TO ENTERPRISE

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Dec. 4, 2013 – Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today unveiled Junos® Pulse AppConnect software development kit (SDK) that enables per-application virtual private network (VPN) connectivity from both Apple iOS and Google Android devices to Juniper’s Junos Pulse Secure Access Service.

Businesses are facing increasing demands from employees for easy access to corporate data and business applications from any device and anywhere. These demands make ensuring the proper level of security and access to information challenging for IT departments. As companies and government organizations are opening up access to sensitive data to a wider diversity of personal and corporate owned mobile devices, many are struggling to balance security with flexibility. It is imperative that they find ways to provide a level of control over Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) while not burdening end users with security that impairs productivity.

News Highlights:
• Junos Pulse AppConnect –Junos Pulse AppConnect technology and SDK is the first solution to offer per-application SSL VPN connections on both Android and Apple iOS mobile devices. With AppConnect, enterprises will have more granular control over access to corporate networks and applications, preserving the security and integrity of their data, network and resources end-to-end.
o Application and data containerization on the device is a popular approach to MDM for companies that want to segment work and personal data on the device. However, this segmentation is often not extended to network communications.
o AppConnect enables companies, developers and application container solution providers, to secure data flowing from applications and application containers to enterprise networks through Junos Pulse Secure Access Service Gateways.
o Data privacy afforded by the container technology in AppConnect can be extended to the data in transit back to the corporate network– transparently and on a per-application basis – for Android and Apple iOS devices. The potential for corporate data leakage via applications on personally owned devices is subsequently greatly reduced.
o Juniper’s new technology allows for VPN sessions to be established per application versus per device, reducing personal traffic on corporate networks and protecting information that really matters to the organization.
o For users, AppConnect relieves employee concerns that personal data is flowing over the corporate network and makes it much easier to connect.  Users no longer need to launch a separate application to connect to the corporate network securely via VPN; Applications and application containers connect automatically to the private network.
o Junos Pulse AppConnect is generally available next week.

Juniper Networks Introduces Breakthrough 100 Gigabit Ethernet Interface for T Series Routers

Industry’s First 100 GE Router Interface to Provide Next Generation of Scale Required to Support Virtualization and Cloud Computing Trends as T Series Crosses 5000 Units Shipped Milestone

KUALA LUMPUR, MALAYSIA, June 9, 2009 – Juniper Networks, Inc. (NASDAQ: JNPR), the leader in high-performance networking, today introduced the industry’s first 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GE) router interface card, which will be delivered on the T1600 Core Router.

Driven by rapidly increasing network traffic—with video, advanced wireless services and emerging trends such as cloud computing as key drivers—core networks will soon require a new generation of scale, and 100 GE interfaces will provide an order of magnitude increase over the majority of interfaces available today.

As the first company to introduce 100 GE interfaces on a core router, Juniper Networks is ensuring its T1600 will provide long-term investment protection and the scalability and flexibility needed to fuel revenue from high-capacity services such as Long Term Evolution (LTE) and video. With a significant increase in per-link capacity, Juniper’s 100 GE interface card will enable service providers and data centers to reduce the number of interfaces required in their networks, yielding significant gains in simplified topologies and enhanced operational efficiencies—helping to lower total cost of ownership.

The 100 GE interfaces being introduced today will build on—and further enhance—several groundbreaking Juniper core innovations in recent years, including:
The T1600 core router: introduced in 2007, the T1600 remains the industry’s highest capacity single chassis core router, the world’s most energy efficient core router, and the only core router with 100 gigabits/second of per-slot capacity
Juniper Control System (JCS) 1200: the industry’s first—and still the only—high performance control plane scaling platform, which introduced independent scaling of forwarding and control plane resources and hardware-based virtualization for T Series routers
TX Matrix Plus: which enables multiple T1600s to be combined with the JCS 1200 to create highly scalable, flexible hardware-based virtualized routers.

Along with these innovations, 100 GE will help wireless and wireline service providers, cloud builders and data centers fully realize the promise of virtualization to consolidate resources, improve efficiency and drive down costs. Juniper is the only company that has announced this unique combination of highly scalable, efficient core routers, large-scale virtualization and 100 GE interfaces—and is therefore uniquely positioned to help customers deliver next generation services such as LTE, software as a service (SaaS) and Networks as a Service (NaaS).

“Networking is moving from an era where high-speed trunks were only found deep in the backbone to one where high-speed trunks are needed all the way out to the edge offices. It’s moving from a time when capacity only added to your traffic-handling capability to one where capacity is essential in creating a high-QoS fabric for virtualization of applications, servers, and content,” said Tom Nolle, president and CEO, CIMI Corporation. “Juniper is adding 100G, and it’s adding that capacity inside a broad set of tools to support the kinds of applications and network missions that will make 100G ubiquitous. They’re announcing a 100G interface, but they will be delivering a 100G ecosystem.”

The innovations listed above, as well as many others, have helped the T Series become the industry’s most widely deployed core routing family. Juniper has shipped over 5000 T Series to more than 220 customers around the world—including more than 500 T1600s in just over a year of availability. According to Synergy Research, in the past five years, Juniper’s share of the core routing market has grown by 44 percent—with the company gaining 11 points of share as others have seen share declines[1].

All of these platforms are powered by JUNOS® software, a single operating system integrating routing, switching, security and network services from Juniper Networks. By enabling customers and partners to develop applications on JUNOS software through the Partner Solution Development Platform (additional fees apply), Juniper enables customers to scale the services plane with unique and customized services. Customers and partners can use the Partner Solution Development Platform to develop and deliver innovative new value-add services for improved productivity and profitability.

“100 GE has always been inevitable, it has just been a question of when—now trends such as cloud computing, data center consolidation and virtualization are making the need for 100 GE more acute and urgent than ever before,” said Opher Kahane, senior vice president and general manager, High-End Systems Business Unit, Juniper Networks. “Building on over a decade of groundbreaking achievements in the core such as the industry’s first 100 gigabit-per-slot routers, Juniper is again leading the industry with 100 GE interfaces. This is the type of innovation that drives customers to pick Juniper for their high-performance networks and ensures long-term investment protection.”

The 100 GE interface card is expected to be deployed in customer test networks before the end of 2009.

[1] According to Synergy Research, Juniper’s share of the core routing market was 25% in Q1 2004 compared to 36% Q1 2009.
