The daily average of 800 gigabytes (GB) of data pushed through the firm’s network was reduced to 100 GB when optimized by Silver Peak.  Overall data transfers were accelerated by 91 percent, while HTTP performance improved by 96 percent, email by 34 percent, storage replication by 57 percent, and SIP traffic by 42 percent.

October 30, 2013 – Pet products and services company Masterpet has streamlined its nightly Veeam virtual machine (VM) replication and disaster recovery (DR) exchange between New Zealand and Australia. Using Silver Peak data acceleration software, Masterpet is now transmitting three times more data twice as fast over a five megabit-per-second (Mbps) connection.

Masterpet’s nightly 500 megabyte (MB) VM replication process between Wellington and Sydney had previously taken 40 minutes to complete over the saturated 5 Mbps wide area network (WAN) connection. This was putting Masterpet’s recovery point objective (RPO) in jeopardy. Following a rapid install of the Silver Peak software, that same 5 Mbps connection now performs like a 140 Mbps connection. This has allowed Masterpet to increase the volume of its data replication to 1.6 Gigabytes (GB), which now takes just 22 minutes to transfer.

“Silver Peak is giving us a full four hours of unused space to push more data through if need be”, said Sean White, Masterpet’s ICT manager for Australasia.

In addition to its data centers at the Masterpet head offices in Wellington and in Sydney, the company has branch offices in Auckland and Christchurch, which run a variety of applications over the WAN. Internet voice traffic accounts for a big portion of the bandwidth being consumed, along with email, remote desktop (RDP) sessions, Web and file-sharing.

VM backups started to saturate the link during the past year, as the company moved most of its servers to a virtual environment. White responded by evaluating ways of streamlining and improving WAN performance.

“First we investigated a larger link, but the cost was prohibitive,” he said. “We needed to improve our DR processes without extending the link, so we began to investigate WAN acceleration solutions.”

Masterpet evaluated WAN acceleration from Riverbed and Silver Peak.  Following a fast and seamless trial of Silver Peak and because of the company’s focus on virtualization, Masterpet determined Silver Peak VRX software to be the ideal fit for their environment.

Silver Peak Study Finds Data Explosion Driving Need for More Off-Site Data Replication

Commissioned Study by Independent Consulting Firm Shows Businesses Constrained by Network Limitations

Singapore. February 26, 2013 – An explosion of data being stored by businesses and the need to protect that data in the wake of recent natural disasters has nearly three-quarters (72%) of organizations seeking to do more off-site data replication according to WAN Acceleration Fast-Tracks Data Protection And Disaster Recovery, a February 2013 commissioned study conducted by Forrester Consulting on behalf of Silver Peak Systems.

The study also showed that two-thirds (66%) of businesses believe they are limited by their wide area network (WAN) performance, which is preventing them from fully utilizing off-site data replication.

According to the study, as data volumes and replication distances grow, it becomes increasingly difficult to put in place an efficient and reliable disaster recovery (DR) plan. The study found that 65% of businesses have more than 100 terabytes of data company-wide, and 39% have more than a petabyte. More than half of all respondents (54%) said that data replication takes too long and nearly half (44%) are not meeting their recovery time and recovery point objectives (RTO/RPO). This explains why approximately one-third of data (34%) is not replicated at all, leaving that data at risk, and why most respondents (53%) stated that upgrading their current DR plans within the next 12 months is a high or critical priority.

Data acceleration solutions are commonly deployed to complement and accelerate off-site data replication over a WAN. However, the study indicated that several additional factors would be necessary before replication acceleration could be considered. A large majority (76%) agreed that it was important or very important for off-site replication acceleration to be low-cost and easy to configure and manage, while 72% wanted a solution that required no changes to the existing network configuration. The study concludes that recent advances in virtualization technology now make it possible to deliver a replication acceleration solution that is software-based.

Silver Peak Survey Shows Software Defined Networking ‘Very Important’ to IT Strategy

Over 50 Percent of Respondents See SDN as Important; 40 Percent Will Implement in Less Than Two Years

December 3, 2012 – Results of a study conducted by Silver Peak Systems, the leader in accelerating data over distance, revealed that software defined networking (SDN) has become a key ingredient to information technology (IT) strategy.  Results showed that more than half (59 percent) feel SDN is important to their IT strategies and 20 percent consider it “very important.”

The importance of SDN was also reflected in how soon IT managers plan to implement it.  One-in-six IT managers intend to implement some form of SDN in less than 12 months, while 40 percent of those surveyed indicated that they would implement it in less than two years.

“Software defined networking is riding the fine line between promise and hype,” said Larry Cormier, senior vice president of worldwide marketing for Silver Peak.  “The biggest issue is the constantly evolving definition of SDN.  Do the results of this survey say we will see mass replacement of physical infrastructure in the next two years?  No.  But what is clear is that enterprise IT professionals are excited about virtualization.  It is a proven path to both capital cost savings and operational efficiencies, which matches exactly our own recent experience as we’ve seen virtual WAN optimization adoption grow 900% in the last year.”

In other results from the study, two-thirds of those polled indicated that their companies were “going virtual” either because of better uptime and high availability (33.3%), or the ability to deliver new services faster (36.5%).  Nearly three-fourths of respondents (73%) are currently using virtualization in their branch offices and nearly all (95%) have implemented virtualization in their data centers. Interestingly, given the choice between physical or virtual wide area network (WAN) optimization in the branch office, the vast majority (81.6%) indicated they prefer virtual.

“This finding certainly reinforces the value, flexibility and simplicity that IT professionals see in virtual solutions,” added Cormier.

The survey also looked at issues around cloud computing. Results show that that one-third of the respondents are currently leveraging the cloud as part of their enterprise infrastructures and nearly 20 percent plan to implement some form of cloud computing in the next 12 months.  When asked about their concerns over the move to the cloud, nearly half (41.8%) were most concerned with security, while one-in-five (20%) were worried about reduced performance.

Silver Peak Velocity is available today for NetApp® SnapMirror® deployments to provide on-average 20x faster offsite replication, and will be available for replication solutionsfrom Dell, EMC, Hitachi Data Systems, and others in the coming months.

To protect data and meet recovery point objectives (RPOs), storage administrators mustcontinually replicate data. August 22, 2012 – Silver Peak Systems, the leader in accelerating data over distance, today introduced the first point-and-click solution for accelerating individual workloads directly from VMware vCenter and other virtual infrastructure management consoles. This is part of Silver Peak’s new “Agility” technology initiative that focuses on improving the application owner’s experience through software-defined virtual workload acceleration.  Silver Peak Agility is putting unprecedented control in the hands of virtualization experts, enabling them to maximize the performance of individual workloads in a fast, easy and highly-efficient manner.
