Allied Telesis:光纖技術將成下一波推動力

Fibre technology to be the next driver of growth for multimedia rich converged homes and businesses, says Allied Telesis

KUALA LUMPUR, 15th August, 2007 – Allied Telesis, one of the world’s leading companies in the networking industry foresees that fibre technology will soon be the next driver of growth for multimedia rich converged homes and businesses.

Speaking to journalists at an Executive Briefing entitled “Fibre– Bringing a Whole New Dimension to Broadband Applications” here today, Kelvin Chua, Deputy Director of Strategic Solution and IT Services, Asia Pacific at Allied Telesis, said the broadband landscape is fast changing due to the rapid increase of high bandwidth applications such as live video streaming, live webcast, online karaoke, online gaming and Podcast.

“Due to this demand, people and businesses require more bandwidth and they do not want to compromise on the quality of the multimedia files and the speed of which they can download these files.

“Many economies around the world have started looking at new technologies that can replace copper which has limited capacity in carrying high bandwidth applications. And one such technology that has proven to be able to meet these needs is fibre,” Chua explained.

Fibre technology has been experimented in economies where high quality broadband applications are seen, for example, in Japan and South Korea. In these countries, businesses have started to leverage on fibre technology to provide leading edge value added services that can generate revenue.

In Japan, as per Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications report in 2006, the number of broadband subscribers in that country has touched 25 million with fibre-to-the-home subscribers touching 7.15 million while the traditional digital subscriber line (DSL) subscription has begun to see a drop since June 2006 to only 14.4 million subscribers.

“In Malaysia, the potential for fibre technology is huge. With a broadband penetration rate of only 3.7 per cent per 100 habitants, we see a huge market here,” said Chua.

Moreover, high-speed broadband has recently been acknowledged by the Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak at the recent National Broadband Implementation Plan meeting, as a technology that not only changes the way of doing business but also improve the public delivery system of Malaysia and serve as a catalyst for economic growth in terms of Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

The Malaysian government has hopes to have 50% of households with fast Internet access by the year 2010. The current broadband penetration rate is 12% for households.

Some of the key benefits of fibre include enabling Internet access at optical speed, low maintenance, greater reach, reliable, scalable and secure. Fibre is deemed a future-proof technology as it has 100 years of lifespan, thus, its capacity is limitless.

“With fibre, usage of applications such as high-quality video services (HDTV, video telephony, and surveillance), Peer-to-Peer applications and services and business services (E-LAN, E-Line) will soon be the mainstream applications,” Chua added.

For instance, it takes only 40 minutes to download and upload a full high density quality movie of 30Gb file size using fiber technology. In comparison, it takes more than eight hours to download the same file using ADSL (Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line) technology that is built on copper.

At the event, Allied Telesis also announced the availability of its fibre-based networking solutions, the Intelligent Multiservice Access Platforms (iMAP 9000 Series) for the converged businesses and the Intelligent Multiservice Gateways (iMG) for the converged home.

Allied Telesis iMAP 9000 Series and iMG solutions are robust as both have been environmentally hardened to withstand outdoor deployments, allowing service providers the option to deploy the solutions indoor or outdoor of their customers’ premises.

The Allied Telesis iMAP 9000 Series offer service providers a highly-reliable infrastructure and a cost-effective means of adding new services and capacity and as their business grows. It comes with IP Triple Play & True Carrier Class IP-Ethernet access, multiple 10Gbps Transport EPSR™ with 50ms switching, scalable to 10Gbps per service slot as well as simultaneous fibre and copper access with any service, any slot hot pluggable modules.

It has also been designed to enable FTTx (Fibre–to-the-x) home or business capabilities, Redundant Network Interfaces, Rapid Spanning Tree and GbE Link Aggregation, Auto Provisioning, IGMPv2 and IPv6 data pass through.

The iMG solutions, meanwhile, offer a wide variety of configurations and speeds for ADSL and fiber-to-the-home deployments. It has been designed to reduce deployment cost, remove the need for truck-roll during deployment and ensure quality of experience to customers. It also comes with Stateful Inspection Firewall for security purposes.
