Intel Malaysia Eco-Walks the Eco-Talk

Ongoing environmental initiatives make their mark

PENANG, May 5, 2012 – Intel Malaysia recently mobilized more than 300 students, employees and others to raise awareness about the importance of environmental sustainability during its annual Global Earth Day celebration. The day’s events saw participants, including students from 13 local schools, two non-governmental organizations and Intel volunteers, taking part in fun-filled educational activities, such as a treasure hunt and an eco-walkathon, which took them through the lush greenery of the Tropical Spice Garden in Penang.

As the highlight of the day’s event, Intel presented awards worth more than RM13,000 and 25 units of surplus laptops to the schools for their participation in the Intel Solid Waste Recycling Program. Now in its tenth year, the Intel Solid Waste Recycling Program is one of the many initiatives driven by Intel Malaysia to encourage the application of the 5Rs -- Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink and Refuse -- among students and teachers.

Last year’s campaign resulted in the collection of more than 42 tons of recyclable solid waste from all 12 participating schools. To date, the Intel Solid Waste Recycling Program has collected over 500 tons of recyclable solid waste and has reached out to more than 170,000 students and teachers from various schools across Penang and Kulim, Kedah.

“At Intel, promoting environmental sustainability is an integral part of every aspect of our work. We strive to minimize our carbon footprint in our manufacturing operations and are focused on achieving the highest standards of sustainability in everything we do; from how we design and manufacture our products to how we build and operate our facilities, manage resources, and handle waste materials.” said Lee Koh Wing, director of corporate services at Intel Malaysia.

As the 2009 Prime Minister’s CSR Award winner for the Environment category, Intel Malaysia has been firm in its commitment to education and environmental stewardship. Notable initiatives undertaken by Intel include the “1 Employee: 1 Tree Program” where 17,000 mangrove trees have been planted in the coastal areas of Penang, as well as a series of biodiversity conservation programs, including turtle protection, river preservation and beach clean-up activities, aimed at promoting the importance of sustaining a healthy marine ecosystem.

“As Intel Malaysia turns 40 this year, we will continue to maintain and enhance the quality of life in the community by getting directly involved in sustained environmental programs and advocacy to drive positive changes at our community. This is in line with one of the four objectives in our global strategy, and that is to ‘Care for our people and our planet, and inspire the next generation.” Lee also added.
