Kuala Lumpur, 23 July 2012 – Canon, a world leader in digital imaging, today announced Canon’s first digital single lens non-reflex camera, EOS M. The all new EOS M cumulate the fruits of Canon’s EOS technology to create a revolutionary interchangeable lens camera in a compact form factor.
“We are thrilled to be able to be part of the global launch and one of the first to announce the arrival of the EOS M model. This Canon EOS M model offers flexibility of an interchangeable-lens system, is mini in size and most importantly it upholds the EOS heritage as the tagline suggests, “it’s lens interchangeable, it’s mini, it’s an EOS”, said Melvyn Ho, President and CEO of Canon Marketing (Malaysia) at the launch today.“The announcement today demonstrates our excellent achievement in our ability to grow and adapt to market demands and needs as we continue to live up to our commitment by providing photographers with the best quality products. To date, Canon holds the no.1 position with a high market share of 60% in the DSLR camera category. With this new addition to the EOS family, the EOS M model, we hope to achieve a 30% market share in the mirrorless category by the end of this year. Most importantly, we will uphold our legacy to create "the best camera in the world.” continued Melvyn.
The biggest breakthrough of the EOS M lies in Canon’s ability to contain an EOS System in a compact body, with full compatibility with new and existing EF and EF-S lenses (with adapter). It achieves this by using a non-reflex mechanism that allows all its components to be housed in a slim and lightweight body. EOS M is by far the most accessible EOS camera providing the same level of photographic brilliance of a DSLR. With the introduction of the EOS M, Canon launched two new lenses (EF-M18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF-M22mm f/2 STM) to compliment its new class of cameras. Furthermore, the EOS M is supported by an unrivaled range of more than 60 EF and EF-S lenses, further expanding its versatility.
The combination of photographic prowess and compact size makes the EOS M an ideal choice for both casual users who desire faster and higher quality photos from an easy-to-tote camera, and existing EOS users who are in the market for a lightweight secondary camera that also makes the most of their existing EF lenses and accessories.
The EOS heritage – distilled to a smaller form factor
By adopting a non-reflex design, size and weight of the EOS M is substantially pared down by removing components such as the optical viewfinder, the main mirror and mirror drive mechanisms. Measuring 108.6 x 66.5 x 32.3mm and weighing 262g (body only), the EOS M has a 59% reduction in thickness, 33% reduction in height and an impressive 50% reduction in weight against a similar-feature DSLR like the EOS 650D.
Despite its pint size, the EOS M bears all the hallmarks of the EOS heritage of ergonomic design and technological excellence. The EOS M is constructed with the same high-tech components found in EOS DSLRs. At the heart is the powerful combination of a large 18.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5 image processor. The increased sensitivity of the large sensor and the rapid processing speeds of the DIGIC 5 work in tandem to produce high quality images with rich color gradation and better background blur, as well as high ISO sensitivity of up to 12800 (expandable to ISO 25600).
Powerful, yet easy to control
For amateurs new to the concept of DSLR photography, EOS advanced cameras might seem daunting with the amount of manual controls and buttons. Enter the EOS M with its intuitive multi-touch 3.0-inch widescreen LCD monitor that allow familiar gestures such as point to snap, pinch to zoom and swipe to view the next photo. There are 35% fewer dials and buttons than a traditional DSLR and users can now shoot via its streamlined touch AF/AE control scheme.
Other features designed to help beginners include Feature Guide, which displays description of shooting modes and other settings to familiarize users to the functions. The EOS Scene Analysis system is capable of automatically detecting different scene types and then setting the Auto-Focus (AF), Auto-Exposure (AE), image processing to suit the shooting conditions. An Auto Lighting Optimizer system also prevents under-exposed shots by automatically brightening images shot in poor lighting conditions.
The best photos, every time
By combining phase-difference AF and Contrast AF into its Hybrid CMOS AF system, the EOS M is able to achieve high-speed and high-precision focus, in both still photography and video modes. The EOS M uses a variety of methods to lock onto subjects, like Face Detection and Multi-point AF. With Face Detection and Tracking AF, the camera automatically detects faces – even in side profile – when a subject is selected via the LCD and keeps it in focus even as it moves around the frame.
When shooting in a room with windows against bright sunlight, the extreme contrast in lighting makes it very difficult to capture a shot without being over or underexposed. The HDR Backlight Compensation function in the EOS M solves this by taking three successive images – one normally exposed, one over, and one under – automatically composited to create the perfect image with all details and highlights optimized.
Multi-shot Noise Reduction allows users to take hand-held photos with great clarity and significant noise reduction. It achieves this by taking four shots in quick succession and composites the data as the final photo. The Handheld Night Landscape mode uses a similar technique for beautiful night photography without the aid of a tripod.
For the more experimental photographers, the EOS M can apply a series of fun Creative Filters like the Grainy/Black & White, Soft Focus, Toy Camera, Miniature, Art Bold, Water Painting and Fish-eye filters.
New EOS M Lenses and Mount Adapter EF-EOS M
A new line of lenses (EF M) have been developed to complement the EOS M camera. The EF-M18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF-M22mm f/2 STM are lightweight, compact, and deliver silent AF performance. The EF-M18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is a versatile zoom lens well-suited for everyday use for both wide-angle and portrait shots; its Image Stabilizer delivers crisp photos equivalent to a shutter speed setting up to four times faster, resulting in sharper image quality. The lens’ Dynamic IS activates automatically during movie shooting to ensure steady shots while the new lenses use an electro magnetic diaphragm with a 7-blade circular aperture, for shots with shallow depth-of-field with a beautiful bokeh effect. On the other hand, the EF-M22mm f/2 STM is a lightweight “pancake” lens that maintains its compactness when mounted on the EOS M; sliding effortlessly into most pockets.
Like other EOS cameras, the EOS M will be able to taken on the full repertoire of EF and EF-S lenses with the Mount Adapter EF-EOS M, greatly expanding the user’s creativity. The beauty of the Mount Adapter EF-EOS M is that full functionalities of the EF lenses are retained with no compromises in image quality. For example, when mounted to an EF-S10-22mm f3.5-4.5 USM lens, the effective and wide-angle 16mm to 35mm focal range is achieved. And when coupled with an EF-S60mm f2.8 Macro USM, users can take life-size macro shots like what you will expect in a DSLR.
The EOS M is fitted with a standard hot shoe, making it compatible with Canon’s full range of Speedlites too. This includes the new Speedlite 90 EX, which can also be set up as a master unit for wireless flash. Other EOS accessories such as remote controls, Speedlite transmitters and GPS receiver (GP E2) are also compatible.
Shoot professional-looking videos with EOS Movie
Just as the EOS M is capable of taking great photos, it can also shoot amazing professional-looking Full HD videos. The APS-C sensor and DIGIC 5 processor allows the EOS M to shoot video at a high ISO of 6400, resulting in sharp details in every frame.
One of the EOS M’s many advanced AF functions is a mode designed specifically for shooting videos. The Movie Servo AF mode, which consists of three differing AF methods- Face Detection + Tracking AF, FlexiZone Multi and FlexiZone Single, is active at all times, even when the EOS M is not recording. When active, this keeps your subject locked in focus at all times, even when it is in motion.
EOS M lenses achieve shallow depth of field to bring out the best in all subjects and encapsulate them with that same beautiful background blur seen in movies and TV shows. Not only do these new STM lenses provide fast and smooth AF, they also reduce the mechanical sounds associated with AF so that the microphone will not pick up any camera noises. The EOS M is outfitted with a jack to support external stereo microphones.
Canon’s new EOS M comes in four colors to appeal to EOS-enthusiasts who prefer the classic black to accessorize with their other DSLR cameras, or the more adventurous users that go for metallic silver or fashion conscious users with the high-gloss finishing in white or red.
