Microsoft’s Windows 8 Blurs Line Between PCs and Tablets

Kuala Lumpur, October 31, 2012 – Microsoft’s new Windows 8 has introduced an entirely new experience to PC users, while blurring the lines between PC and tablet usage according to an initial review by tech industry market intelligence company IDC.

The new OS is likely to entice consumers to experience the best of both worlds with its spotlight on apps, social media and live updates.

“The tech-savvy nature of local end users coupled with the relative ease of navigating through the tile based interface bode well for increasing PC and tablet adoption rates,” according to Daniel Pang, Research Manager – ASEAN, Client Devices, IDC Asia/Pacific.

“Most vendors will be launching a wide range of new Windows 8 based PC, tablet and PC-hybrid models over the upcoming months. This is a double bonus for end users as they will be enjoying the benefits of new software and hardware. New touch-enabled devices will be the products to watch," said Pang.

However, it will be the pricing of Windows 8 devices that will be a key determining factor for Microsoft's success as Malaysia is still a price-sensitive nation with sales dominated by low-cost devices.

Ng Juan Jin, Market Analyst, Client Devices for IDC Asia/Pacific noted that the price consideration is essential in capturing the substantial first time user market which currently faces heavy competition from iOS and Android especially for its limited wallet share.

“Identifying the correct price equilibrium will be a challenge for vendors looking to gain in terms of revenue and volume shipments. New PC form factors such as convertible tablet-PC hybrids may be consigned to a premium, low volume niche if prices are perceived to be oppressively high by the mass consumer base," said Ng.

“However, with Microsoft's daring move in revamping its entire aesthetic appeal to its end users, and provided that manufacturers and app developers continue to push new innovations into the market to complement the features of Windows 8, IDC is cautiously optimistic that there will be a renewed uptake in PC and tablet sales over the upcoming quarters,” concluded Ng.
