THE FASTEST GROWING MOBILE MESSAGING APPLICATION WECHAT SURPASSES 300 MILLION USER ACCOUNTS GLOBALLY IN JUST 2 YEARS

Kuala Lumpur, 1 February 2013 – Closing into its second year anniversary, WeChat – the leading free mobile messaging application developed by China’s leading provider of comprehensive Internet services, Tencent – has recently surpassed 300 million user accounts globally since its global inception on January 21st, 2011.

“We would like to express our sincerest gratitude to all WeChat users. It is because of you that we are able to continue with WeChat’s rapid growth and bring a change to the mobile communication landscape,” commented Pony Ma, Chief Executive Officer of Tencent.

WeChat took 433 days to flourish with 100 million user accounts last March. It then took merely six months before it achieved 200 million user accounts last September and has now broken the 300 million user accounts mark in just merely four months. Known as one of the most fast-growing, progressive mobile messaging application, WeChat’s success is driven by its multifaceted but user-oriented features which lead to better user experiences.

“This short span of two years saw growth acceleration for WeChat users and in that; we’ve gained much international footprints in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, US, India, Singapore, Malaysia and many more. With the current 300 million-plus user accounts globally, we aim to continue with future expansion plans onto more platforms – helping users to discover, explore and build new connections across the globe,” said Louis Song, Country Manager for Malaysia and Singapore in Tencent’s International Business Group.
The free mobile messaging application dubbed as the new age mobile social networking platform, is now available on iOS, Android, Symbian, Windows Phone and has just recently landed on the BlackBerry OS – turning it into the first and only social messaging application available on all major mobile platforms.

WeChat’s constant innovation has provided its users an entirely revolutionary experience by infusing social networking capabilities into its features. In addition to its key features – Text and Voice messaging, Hold-To-Talk button, Group Chat, and Photo Sharing – WeChat has the Shake, Look Around and Drift Bottle feature dressed in a unique user interface. WeChat also has the Moments feature – an integrated micro-blogging and social networking plug-in.

Last July, Tencent announced an updated 4.2 version for its Android platform, allowing its users to make high resolution video calls over Wi-Fi and 3G networks. WeChat has also positioned itself on the trend from PC to mobile with its Web Grab feature – a feature that allows users to pull images from their computer web browsers straight to their mobiles with just a shake. From there, users are able to share the images with their friends or post it on WeChat’s social network, Moments.

Supported on Wi-Fi, 3G, and 4G data networks, WeChat is an extension to its users’ social life with creativity, entertainment, flexibility and convenience all in one application.  The social networking mobile application is now available on iOS, Android, Windows Phone, Symbian and BlackBerry platforms in up to 17 languages including English, Chinese, Indonesian, Portuguese, Thai, Vietnamese and Russian.
