Kuala Lumpur, 7 March 2013. MALAYSIA’s premier research university, University of Malaya and Maxis Berhad (Maxis), Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider, have embarked on a joint initiative to WiFi the entire University campus. The initiative will also transform the Perdanasiswa Complex into a hive of student activity through the launch of the Students Activity Centre and Maxis Lounge.
In collaboration with Maxis, the Students Activity Centre and Maxis Lounge is one of the initiatives by UM in providing a conducive and relaxing environment for students to spend their leisure time in between classes.
Targetting off campus students, the Students Activity Centre will house meeting and discussion rooms for Students Representative Council (MPP) members while the Maxis Lounge will be equipped with comfortable sofas, work stations and free wi-fi.
Fitri Abdullah, Maxis Head of Business Services said, “With our partnership with UM, we look forward to providing a more enriching experience for students, faculty members and administrative staff of the University, enabling them to interact in a more connected world and link up to relevant resources and peers to develop their academic work.”

Hailing the efforts of the Students Affairs Department (HEP) and Maxis, the Vice-Chancellor of UM, Tan Sri Dr. Ghauth Jasmon expressed hopes that the Students Activity Centre and Maxis Lounge will further strengthen student interaction within campaus as well as enable a more connected lifestyle through technology.
“I wish to commend Maxis for their efforts in providing UM with a Maxis Lounge for students especially for the off campus students.
With the Students Activity Centre and Maxis Lounge, the students can spend their time productively, surfing the internet provided by Maxis, while doing research for their assignments,” he added.
UM signed up under Maxis Integrated Partner in Education last year. Under this programme, Maxis will provide technological tools and solutions, including WiFi connectivity throughout the campus, WiFi hotspots, Maxis product sales distribution points, as well as the the opportunity for students to enrol into Maxis’ Entrepreneurship Programme which trains and equips students with the necessary knowledge and skills to become an authorised sales agent.
