DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd has once again ranked No. 1 in Malaysia by Climate Disclosure Project (CDP) Asia (excluding Japan) Climate Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI). This annual index is the world's only global environmental disclosure system that highlights companies in Asia excluding Japan, which have displayed a strong approach to the disclosure of information regarding climate effects.
Companies are scored out of 100 on the completeness and standard of their submissions achieved a position of leadership with regards to the quality of climate change data it has submitted to the global marketplace through CDP.
The achievement was announced in the CDP Asia ex-Japan Climate Change Report 2013, which tracks how the regions largest listed companies are acting in response to the changing climate. This is DiGi's second time to rank as No. 1 in Malaysia and was also awarded with a best year-on-year disclosure score award for South East Asia. This is also the company's fifth time participating in CDP's climate change program, designed to enable management of greenhouse gas emissions and the risks and opportunities associated with climate change.
CDP's Global 500 Climate Change Report 2013 also ranked DiGi's parent company, Telenor Group 3rd among the world's largest telecommunications companies - up from 10th place in 2012. This was also the first time Telenor Group has also been included in CDP's Global 500 Climate Performance Leadership Index (CPLI). This annual index highlights those companies listed on the FTSE Global Equity Index Series (Global 500) that demonstrate commitment to the environment.
Joachim Rajaram, DiGi's Head of Communications and Corporate Responsibility said, "Over the years, we have developed a holistic view of sustainability across the organisation and understand areas where action may be taken to integrate relevant environmentally-friendly considerations into our business.
"We are honoured that this award recognises the deep focus of our sustainability agenda, leadership in diligently reporting and managing carbon savings in Malaysia, and indicates that we are on par with our Asian counterparts in this area. Moving forward, we will continue efforts to manage our carbon footprint with aggressive targets to reduce emissions, guided by the infrastructure provided by CDP."
DiGi's high scores indicate the provision of robust climate data and a good understanding of climate change related issues affecting the company and the community, and that the integration of these activities is a key priority for DiGi's business strategy. Through various channels, including Bloomberg terminals, these scores are communicated to investors and other decision makers to assess corporate preparedness for the ever changing market demands and emissions regulation.
The CDLI comprises of 42 companies that achieved a score within the top 10% of the sample assessed. The minimum score has risen year-on-year as corporate understanding of the need for climate transparency has increased, which now stands at 76.
Paul Simpson, Chief Executive Officer of CDP comments: "Companies that score highly enough to be included in the Climate Disclosure Leadership Index are responding to the call for greater corporate climate accountability. They have demonstrated leading practice for the measurement of greenhouse gas emissions and energy use and transparency of their climate change strategy."
DiGi has been disclosing carbon emissions measurements and targets to the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) since 2009. For more information on DiGi's sustainability agenda, please read the company's Sustainability Report at www.digi.com.my/sustainability.
