Kuala Lumpur, 24 January 2014 – It was a defining and life-changing moment for Daniel Cheah Chee Lik when he was declared the winner of Pop Star 2013 – a prestigious local Chinese language singing competition. Accompanied by joyful cheers and endless congratulatory wishes from other contestants, judges and sponsors; the win also brought Daniel a few leaps closer to his dream of music superstardom and he is now given a second chance to make his mark in the entertainment industry.

Daniel, who was part of a now-disbanded local group called DoubleCheese Burger a few years ago, outshined 9 other finalists during the grand finale held recently at HGH Convention Centre Kuala Lumpur, clinching the title and wooing the crowd with his mind-blowing vocal abilities and performances. The win also qualifies him to represent Malaysia to compete in the One Million Star singing competition in Taiwan – one of Chinese music industry’s most popular talent searches, in which Wendy Woo, Pop Star 2012’s second runner up is one of the top 5 finalists in the current season, which is scheduled to end by 26 January 2014.

“I feel so blessed to have won Pop Star 2013, and I would like to thank U Mobile and New Pro-Star for this great opportunity. You don’t really get second chances very often in the entertainment industry, so winning this title means a lot to me and my dream to be a recording artist and a music superstar. Now, I have to get myself ready for One Million Star, and I hope I can do Malaysia proud,” said the 22-year old KL native, who is a sales consultant in a fitness centre.

Daniel also walked away with cash prize and product worth RM40,000 along with a brand new Sony Xperia Z1 from U Mobile. Joseph Kan Chok Chen and Wandy Koay Xin Yi, both from Johor Bahru, were named 1st runner up and 2nd runner up respectively, where they each walk away with RM30,000 and RM20,000 in cash prizes, and other prizes, which include a brand new Samsung GALAXY S4 courtesy of U Mobile.

Joseph was also named ‘Most Popular Pop Star’ – an award credited to U Mobile – for receiving the most SMS votes from fans and the public. The 18-year old student was awarded a brand new Sony Xperia M for winning the title.

U Mobile, Malaysia’s most dynamic and innovative telco, is the title sponsor of the singing competition for the third consecutive year, continuing the company’s commitment in nurturing young talents and supporting them to achieve their dreams and aspirations. It also part of the telco’s initiative to offer customers more than just connectivity and mobile services; but also an unrivalled mobile experience.

“Being an emerging telco and a challenger brand in the market, U Mobile can really relate to the contestants and how they aspire to achieve their lifelong dreams to create an impact in the entertainment industry. The sponsorship furthers our aim to inspire young talents to pursue their aspirations and goals to achieve greater heights in their desired industries, as how U Mobile strives to expand our presence in the local telecommunication industry,” said Jasmine Lee, U Mobile’s Director of Marketing.

“We are glad that the top three winners of the competition are normally sent to One Million Star in Taiwan to compete, and we are proud to hear of the achievements they have shown in the competition. This gives us more compelling reasons to continue our strive to nurture young talents and support their dreams of achieving greater heights,” she added.

Pop Star 2013 was organized by New Pro-Star as an annual singing competition. Auditions were held October 2013, and the organizer travelled to several places in Klang Valley and Johor Bahru to discover fresh singing talents for the competition.
