Scope International Awards 21 Technopreneurs at ICT Competition Prize Ceremony
KUALA LUMPUR, 5 DECEMBER 2007- Scope International (M) Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Standard Chartered Bank awarded 21 technopreneurs at the ICT Competition Prize Ceremony today. The prize ceremony was graced by the Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, Yang Berhormat Dato’ Kong Cho Ha.
Julian Wynter, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bank Malaysia Berhad said, “This competition has completely validated our position that Malaysia is a world-class base for providing leading edge outsourcing solutions for global companies like Standard Chartered. Moreover, the wealth of ICT ideas unveiled during this event augurs well for this event to become an annual and important landmark event in the Malaysian ICT calendar of events.”
Scope International organised the national competition with the following objectives, namely:
· to spur and encourage ICT development amongst university students and ICT professionals;
· to help the government increase the pool of knowledge workers; and
· to encourage more students to enrol in ICT related courses.
Arif Siddiqui, Chief Information Officer and Head of Kuala Lumpur Global Shared Services Centre (KLGSSC), Scope International said, “Scope International’s national ICT competition reinforces our long-standing belief that there is an abundance of Malaysian ICT talent that is capable of conceptualising and implementing innovative ICT solutions and services that are second to none.”
The inaugural Scope International ICT Competition attracted 350 participants who submitted 145 entries – 109 for the professional category and 36 for the student category.
The winning professional entry was from the Columbus team comprising Mun Yee Phang and Jason Lee who received RM15,000, a plaque and a Certificate of Excellence for their project idea of using GPS technology and a Bluetooth headset to develop a high-tech sensing cane for the blind. The winning student entry was from the UV-ICU team comprising Quah Kah Hin, Chen Say Hong and Hooi Ling Goh of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) who received RM12,000, a plaque and a Certificate of Excellence for their project idea of using ultraviolet light and photodiode detection technology to help the blind detect counterfeit notes.
Five teams each from the professional and student categories respectively were shortlisted for the final round of judging. Shortlisted students entries represented both public and private tertiary institutions including Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), Curtin University of Technology, Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (APIIT) and Tunku Abdul Rahman College (TAR).
