45,000 Huawei Engineers Participate in the World’s Largest Desktop Cloud

Shenzhen, China, 16 February, 2012: Huawei, a leading global information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider, today announced that 45,000 Huawei engineers use virtual desktops as part of the world’s largest desktop cloud collaboration.

In order to leverage the scalability and flexibility offered by the cloud, Huawei began to utilise desktop cloud technology at its Shanghai R&D Center in 2009, and today, it is used by more than 45,000 Huawei engineers from around the world. By using a thin client program, engineers can access their virtual desktops anytime, which results in improved efficiency and work flow. With a desktop cloud deployment, data is no longer stored on each PC, but on servers in the cloud data center. By centralising control of the information storage, the Huawei desktop cloud also greatly enhances information security. In addition, maintenance has become more efficient as each IT engineer is now able to manage more than 1,000 virtual desktops, compared with the previous 100 desktops.

With the rapid development of cloud-computing technologies, more and more business applications have moved into the cloud, signifying a rising trend of the migration of businesses towards cloud services. The resulting demand in the development of regional cloud capabilities and services is in line with Malaysia’s vision towards a high-income knowledge economy, and the rapid advancements in cloud sophistication from industry players like Huawei is aiding in acceptance and usage maturity amongst the government as well as private sector organizations and brands looking to innovate.

Compared to conventional desktop technology, it is estimated that using a desktop cloud can save businesses 30% of a traditional investment and conserve 73% in power consumption, as well as maximise the facility’s CPU with an increase of 60% capacity, from 5%. Deployment time is also reduced for the desktop cloud from three months to one week.

Huawei’s desktop cloud is already improving the operations of customers in over 30 countries with a total of 100,000 users, in a range of industries including government, healthcare, education, telecom, and finance. Huawei is committed to offering leading cloud applications and IT infrastructure solutions to promote cloud-based services and applications. In order to promote openness and collaboration across the industry, Huawei has joined hands with more than 300 partners to drive growth and shape the future of the industry.
