KUALA LUMPUR, 18 April 2014 — Microsoft Malaysia (“Microsoft”) celebrated the creativity, passion and innovation of youth, in announcing the 3 winning student teams of Microsoft’s Imagine Cup 2014 competition National Finals, held from 10-12 April 2014 at Telekom Malaysia Convention Centre, Menara TM. These outstanding youth teams will represent the nation and compete in their respective categories at the Imagine Cup 2014 World Semifinals, on route to the World Finals which will be held in Seattle, USA from 29 July–1 August 2014.

At the Malaysia National Finals, 15 teams which qualified from the first round of selection competed in the three core categories of the Imagine Cup: Games, Innovation and World Citizenship. At the end of the three-day competition, the winning teams from all three category walked away with Nokia Lumia smartphones, and will represent Malaysia at the Imagine Cup World Semifinals. For the first time in the National Finals, there was a tie in the World Citizenship category. Another assessment will be made at a later date to determine the winner. The winning teams are:

Every year, Imagine Cup receives enormous numbers of students who compete in three core Imagine Cup competitions of Games, Innovation and World Citizenship. They do so either in the dozens of National Finals held by Microsoft subsidiaries around the world or in the Online Finals, which provides students without a National Final in their country a path to victory.

In the end however, only a few of the very best teams make it all the way to the World Finals and receive global recognition for their hard work. This year, Microsoft decided to change that.

Every first-place winner in every National Finals and in the Online Finals will compete in a whole new round: the World Semifinals. These first-place teams will be celebrated on the Imagine Cup website as World Semifinalists so everyone can hear their stories, see their projects and be inspired by their imagination and passion. All World Semifinalists will then compete against each other in a global judging round to select the few teams invited to the World Finals to be held in Seattle, USA from 29 July till 1 August 2014.

Dinesh Nair, Director of Developer and Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Malaysia, said, “The Imagine Cup continues to experience great success over the years; a testament to its success in reaching out to the hearts and minds of students. The quality of the projects and enthusiasm shown by the students in this competition have been thrilling for us. For 21-year old Yong Bang Xiang from Team UTM Durian Runtuh, winner of the Games category, it was an invaluable experience. “The Imagine Cup has been a great learning experience for me and the team. It was challenging to be able to develop and improvise our project in a short period of time, thus winning the Games category was very exhilarating! We are proud to be representing the country, and we look forward to further improvements and learnings at the World Semifinals,” he said.

Team HEARTCATCHER was also very appreciative of the knowledge gained from participating in Imagine Cup. “In a competition such as this, the focus is very much on the technicalities of getting the project to work. However, speaking to the judges and taking advice from them opened up our minds to think about the project more wholly; to include the business and marketing points of view as well. It was a real eye-opener and we have benefited tremendously from this experience,” added Lim Ai Jia, one half of Team HEARTCATCHER.

Judges had a tough time determining the winner for the World Citizenship category – teams CHAP from Swinburne University’s Sarawak campus and A-Ware from UTAR came up with equally creative ideas that will need a second round of assessment to decide the winner who will go to the next round. For Daniel Vong from team CHAP, it is the melting pot of innovative minds that attracted him most. “As students, we have ideas and innovations that can sometimes be left unexplored because there is no avenue for it. Microsoft initiatives such as the Imagine Cup provided a platform for us to bring together different people with different skills, to bring those ideas to life. The judges and mentors we encountered during this competition have been very helpful in giving u guidance us to build a better end product,” Daniel said.

Team A-Ware shared Daniel’s thoughts as well. Benson Law, team member of A-Ware added, “The judges and our fellow students were very supportive all the way, we feel very privileged to have had the chance to compete with the best teams from universities around Malaysia. The global issue of starvation and food wastage was one that resonated with our team and through Imagine Cup, we have the opportunity to use technology to do good. We will further improve our application and hopefully we will get into the World Semifinals and be able to bring our project to reality.”

New payment channel for apps exclusively for DiGi customers

Amber software update

Nokia and MDeC
Last year, Nokia and MDeC announced collaboration on Windows Phone 8 apps development targeted at local developers in Malaysia. Ovum comment: Nokia Lumia 1020 sets new smartphone benchmark but pricing will be key

Nokia’s latest Lumia 1020 finally marries Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 software with the 41MP over-sampling camera technology the company previously marketed in the Symbian PureView 808.

Tony Cripps, Principal device analyst at Ovum believes “The combination sets a new benchmark for high-end smartphone engineering – and a timely reminder of Nokia’s R&D capabilities – but the company must still overcome incumbent rivals, slow adoption of Windows Phone and a modest marketing budget if it is to finally help the company turn a financial corner after its recent time in the doldrums.”

Cripps continues:

 “At a time when macro-level innovation has seemed to be lacking in smartphones – due to the homogeneity of smartphone operating systems and the drive to appeal to the mass market – Nokia’s Lumia 1020 demonstrates that there is still considerable scope to drive forward the user experience in core smartphone capabilities. This is evidenced not only in the Lumia 1020’s imaging prowess but also in its audio abilities, the company’s Rich Recording technology similarly transforms the Lumia 1020’s audio recording.

“Both imaging and audio are key areas of investment for Nokia and crucial to its long-term strategy of rebuilding market differentiation. This is true not only at the high end, where the Lumia 1020 will be something of a beacon, but also further down the range as the fruits of Nokia’s labours begin to trickle down through the midrange towards the value end of the smartphone spectrum.

The previous PureView 808 gave a tantalizing view of what was possible in terms of phone imaging but felt squandered in the context of its geriatric operating system and aesthetically compromised by a cumbersome – if impressive – camera module.

“Nonetheless, while the Lumia 1020 looks to be the new belle at the smartphone ball, its debut will not necessarily attract a mass of suitors. Most obviously, the device will be expensive. Pricing has yet to be revealed but engineering of the kind on offer in the Lumia 1020 does not come cheap. Aggressive operator subsidies would no doubt help in that regard, but might detract from the device’s premium engineering and user experience.

“Furthermore, Nokia, and Windows Phone more generally, still suffers from a lack of consumer awareness and marketing dollars compared with their key rivals, Apple and Samsung-plus-Android. While this situation is undoubtedly improving, these factors continue to put off many prospective consumers due a greater chance of favorite applications being unavailable.

As such, when lined up against rival devices such as Apple’s iPhone 5 and Samsung’s Galaxy S4, which now effectively sell themselves, the case for selecting the Lumia 1020 is less clear cut.

Nokia may still have work to do to convince prospective buyers to sacrifice favourite apps for superior imaging. But for those who are less concerned about specific third-party apps or in need of something different, the Lumia 1020’s pictures provide a thousand reasons to look again to Espoo.”

Social video app, Vyclone now available on Nokia Lumia smartphones

MSC Malaysia ICON & Nokia to spur development of local mobile applications on new Windows Phone 8 platform

Partnership aims to put Malaysian mobile app developers on the global map

KUALA LUMPUR, JANUARY 9, 2013 – Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and Nokia, via its MSC Malaysia ‘ICON’ (Integrated Content Development) program, today announced a partnership to foster the development of local mobile app content on the new Windows Phone 8 platform.

The joint collaboration will offer customized training and community support to up to 100 ICON developers to help them learn about the Windows Phone 8 platform and build a knowledge base for technical expertise. On top of the training, Nokia will offer its Nokia Premium Developer Program (NPDP), a quick start-up programme that provides developers with the right tools and services. These tools are designed to help developers create, maintain and deliver world-class mobile apps.

Ng Wan Peng, Chief Operations Officer, Multimedia Development Corporation and Encik Wan Murdani Wan Mohamad, Director of Digital Enablement Division, Multimedia Development Corporation believes that the new mobile platforms such as Windows 8 will push the standards of app development to greater heights.

Nokia will drive the growth of the developers’ businesses further by introducing new monetisation and analytics capabilities such as in-app purchasing, in-app advertising and Nokia Ad Exchange. The ICON developers’ apps will also be prominently featured in Malaysia across advertising material, retail channels, events and roadshows. Apps from this programme will also be included in a dedicated collection in ‘App Highlights’, preloaded on all Nokia Lumia devices in Malaysia.

Launched in 2009, ICON was conceived to encourage and facilitate the creation of local mobile apps by developing capacity and building the ecosystem for local developers to enter the global apps market.

The first run of ICON from 2009 to 2010 saw 1,100 individuals exposed to the basic knowledge of app development, out of which, 221 developers successfully completed the advanced training in iOS and Android platforms. MDeC approved financial grants to 60 projects, which saw 180 jobs created and 96 mobile apps created.

The success of the first ICON prompted MDeC to launch ICON2 in July 2010, which offered two-tier structured assistance and facilitation opportunities. The lower-tier called ICONapps, targeted fresh graduates and new developers who were ready to pitch ideas to create mobile apps. As at the end of 2012, a total of 200 developers across the nation have successfully pitched their ideas and more than 80 mobile apps have been created and marketed in both iOS and Android stores.

The upper-tier, called ICONdap, is aimed at funding online and mobile content developers to create ideas into a proof-of-concept thus, encouraging entrepreneurship. So far, MDeC has approved funding for 20 projects, out of which, two have been completed whilst the rest will be completed in stages by the first quarter of 2013.

The ICON and Nokia collaboration announcement was held in conjunction with a roadshow to launch the latest Nokia Lumia 620.

Nokia Lumia 510 brings Windows Phone to lower price points

Bright 4-inch display and signature Lumia experiences in Nokia’s new entry-level Windows Phone

Nokia announced the Nokia Lumia 510, a smart and modern entry-level smartphone. Featuring a bright, 4-inch display, the Nokia Lumia 510 makes the unique benefits of Lumia and Windows Phone even more affordable.

Following on from the success of the Nokia Lumia 610, this latest addition to the Nokia Lumia range comes in five vivid colors for a fun and personal way to enjoy Windows Phone.

Windows Phone is different to other smartphone platforms thanks to Live Tiles, making it easy to see incoming messages and updates; People Hub, which brings together contacts and updates from across social networks into one location, and access to Microsoft Office and Internet Explorer 9 on the mobile.

The Nokia Lumia 510 will be available in red, yellow, cyan, white and black. Nokia estimates the retail price for the Nokia Lumia 510 to be around USD 199, excluding taxes and subsidies. Sales are planned to begin in November 2012, starting with India and China, and followed closely by other Asia-Pacific countries and South America.
