INDUSTRY GROUPS HAILS CIP CATALYST

KUALA LUMPUR, August 15 – Various industry groups says the move by Cradle Investment Programme (CIP) to triple its grant size and expand areas of funding will assist in building world class technopreneurs.

CIP is Malaysia ’s first development and pre-seed funding programme managed by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd. Recently revamped, the programme is now known as CIP Catalyst where budding innovators with technology-oriented ideas can now apply for conditional grants.

The conditional grant comprises a maximum of three conditional tranches of up to RM50,000 per tranche to groups of innovative individuals for their technology ideas in the ICT, non-ICT and high-growth technology industries.

Under CIP Catalyst, the ambit of funding areas has expanded where from just the development of prototype, proofs of concept and / or business plans, it now includes purchase of market feasibility research, Intellectual Property (IP) search and registration, surveys on concrete statistical data and product sampling expenses.
Stephen Chia, President of Technopreneurs Association of Malaysia (TeAM) lauds the move and said that the funding support for technopreneurs especially at the pre seed stage is crucial.

“The additional funding is important as it will help to cover the costs that are normally not associated in the development of ideas in the prototype stage. These include funding for further research, seeking smart partnerships both locally and abroad, road shows to test their products and prototypes, and legal issues associated with IP protection and registration.”

“In addition, the new funding structure will also assist CIP to monitor the progress and milestones achieved by the technopreneurs, and nurture the project to the development stage,” added Chia.

Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation (MACRI) Founder and President, Dato’ Ghazi Sheikh Ramli concur and said the initiative is timely as providing additional grants will further spur the development of technology innovations in the country.

“Malaysian innovators will now have three times more financial resources to take their ideas closer to the realm of commercialization. It is thoughtful of CIP to meet the needs of technopreneurs to conduct market feasibility studies and obtain IP protections for their technology innovations. These are key components that ensures successful commercialization for their innovations,” said Dato’ Ghazi.

President of New Entrepreneur Forum (NEF), Ashran Ghazi also applauded the introduction of CIP Catalyst as it will be responsible in developing, nurturing and guiding entrepreneurs, test out individual competencies and manage risk simultaneously in producing market-driven products and services.

“On the importance of granting additional funds for technopreneurs is to allow them to carry out other aspects of development and ensure completeness of their product.”

He however cautioned that the process needs to be flexible to cater to each individual’s needs as some may have already done the necessary research but would require additional funds for development. To overcome this, Ashran said CIP will have to monitor the process so it does not become a hindrance to the progression of the idea.

The industry groups recognized CIP’s role to boost the number of successful technopreneurs and believe CIP will be able to narrow the gap in the innovation value chain -- from the generation of ideas to the commercialization stage – not only through the disbursements of grants but via value added services such as guidance and mentoring the technopreneurs..

Since its inception in 2003, Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd has approved a total of RM15.7 million to 270 innovative entrepreneurs and to date has successfully commercialized about 42 per cent of the completed ideas it has funded. A sum of RM100 million has been allocated by Ministry of Finance MOF for this programme.

(Malaysian Association of Creativity and Innovation, MACRI) 创办人兼主席 Dato' Ghazi Sheikh Ramli表示赞同,並认为这项努力正合时宜,因为提供额外拨款的獎掖将進一步的激发国内的科技创意发展。

Dato' Ghazi

Lenovo Unleashes PC Beast on Mobile Workstation Market with ThinkPad W700

Delivers Industry’s First Built-in Digitizer and Color Calibrator Along with Ultimate Power, Multimedia and Display Technologies

MALAYSIA, August 14, 2008 – Lenovo today introduced the ThinkPad W700, a 17-inch widescreen mobile workstation engineered with game-changing technologies and innovations to exceed the demands of the most data and graphics-intensive users. Lenovo brings the industry’s first built-in digitizer and color calibrator to a mobile workstation and combines these innovations with first-in-market technologies such as new NVIDIA® Quadro FX mobile graphics and supporting the upcoming Intel® mobile quad core processor. Other features such as optional dual hard drives with RAID configurations, up to 8 GB of high speed DDR3 memory, a range of wireless connectivity options and excellent multimedia capabilities including an optional Blu-ray™ DVD burner/player make the ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation the standard-bearer for power and performance in a mobile workstation.

“Lenovo has engineered a new breed of mobile workstation with the ThinkPad W700,” said Khoo Hung Chuan, Country Manager, Enterprise Business, Lenovo Malaysia. “No other PC manufacturer has a mobile workstation that delivers the sheer power, performance and cutting-edge innovation that Lenovo has packed into the ThinkPad W700. The ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation flat out delivers the command performance our customers demand at the desk as well as in the field."

According to IDC, the compound annual growth rate for the worldwide mobile workstation market has been more than 60 percent per year since 2002.1The ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation extends Lenovo’s commitment to workstation users, complementing Lenovo’s W500 mobile workstation and ThinkStation S10 and D10 workstations. As workers in fields such as digital content creation, computer-aided design and manufacturing, digital photography and science fields including the oil and gas industries become increasingly mobile, they are demanding the full-featured performance of a desktop workstation in a mobile workstation.

First-in-Industry Engineered Innovation

The ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation takes customer driven innovation to a new level with an optional built-in palm rest digitizer and color calibrator. Lenovo and Intel collaborated to integrate the color calibrator and digitizer into the ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation. Designed for digital content creators and users, the mobile workstation’s digitizer helps them easily configure an image, either mapping it to the entire screen or to an area defined by the user. High performance users, especially digital photographers, will benefit from models with the built-in color calibrator as color continues to play an important role in their work. The calibrator automatically adjusts the display’s color in up to half the time of many external calibrators and with higher accuracy, resulting in the most accurate, true-to-life images in an integrated package. Together with the upcoming Intel® mobile quad core processor, multimedia designers and animators now have outstanding quad-core processor performance and true color replication that is critical for realistic digital creations and workflow efficiencies.

Super-Charged Performance Unleashed

Supporting the latest Intel processor technologies including the upcoming mobile quad core processor, the mobile workstation can be configured with up to 8 GB of memory with an additional 2 GB of Intel Turbo Memory. Lenovo also offers models with Intel® vPro™ technology for complete manageability. The mobile workstation can be equipped with dual internal hard drives, including solid state drive storage. The ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation offers both the NVIDIA® Quadro® FX 2700M and 3700M Open GL graphics processors with up to 1 GB of dedicated video memory for exceptional graphics performance in a 17-inch mobile workstation. The hard drives can be configured for RAID 0 to help users access and save their data faster than traditional disk-writing methods, or users can choose RAID 1 for mirrored data redundancy.

The mobile workstation includes WiFi wireless connectivity. Additionally, users can connect to other devices wirelessly using mobile workstation models featuring Bluetooth and ultra wideband technology. Models supporting WiMAX will be available later this year 2.

New Heights in Display Technology and Multimedia Excellence

As the company’s first product with a 17-inch display, the ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation delivers an unparalleled viewing experience with a combination of leading technologies. Its optional 400-nit WUXGA display provides up to twice the brightness of earlier ThinkPad mobile workstation models, and the 72 percent wide color gamut provides more than 50 percent greater color intensity. The high resolution, extreme brightness and wide color gamut coupled with the NVIDIA Quadro FX MXM graphics solution results in a user experience unequalled in a mobile workstation today. For external connectivity, the ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation provides support for Dual Link DVI, Display Port and VGA. A 7-in-1 multicard reader, and five USB ports give users flexibility in transferring and accessing digital content. Additionally, the workstation comes with an optional compact flash reader and Blu-ray™ DVD burner/player. An optional mini-dock extends the mobile workstation’s capabilities with eSATA and digital audio ports as well as convenient cabling for power, external monitors and peripherals.

Packed for extreme performance, the mobile workstation also features BIOS/port disablement and an optional fingerprint reader, a smartcard reader and hard drives with full-disk encryption. It will carry more than 20 certifications from independent software vendors.

“Our engineers use Lenovo ThinkStation workstations to help them design the next-generation Williams - Toyota FW31 race cars, aiming to make them faster and more agile, with greater performance than the competition," said Chris Taylor, IT manager, AT&T Williams. “We’re thrilled to see Lenovo deliver the workstation performance we’ve come to rely on - now in a mobile, portable solution.”

Pricing and Availability3
The ThinkPad W700 mobile workstation will be available from September 2008 with models starting at RM10,199. It is available through Lenovo Business Partners and www.lenovo.com.

New Report from Leading Industry Analyst Firm on Lawson Smart Office Available on Lawson.com

Personalized user interface introduced in March puts people at the center of their “information workplace”

ST. PAUL, Minn., Aug. 13, 2008 – Lawson Software (Nasdaq: LWSN) has made a new Gartner report on the Lawson Smart Office user productivity platform available on a complimentary basis at www.lawson.com. The report, “Dataquest Insight: Lawson Raises the Bar With Differentiating ERP User Interface,” was published August 8 by analyst Robert P. Anderson.

Announced during the Lawson Conference and User Exchange in March, Lawson Smart Office enables users to directly access Lawson enterprise and business intelligence applications, as well as Microsoft productivity, mobility and collaboration applications, and update data pervasively across all of them. The objective is to combine information with business intelligence in a way that reflects how people actually interact with business software in their jobs.

“In the past, the user experience associated with business applications has been sub-optimal at best, lacking common UX best practices often creating an intimidating and steep learning curve for users,” Anderson writes in the report. “Fortunately, enterprise business applications have become increasingly more interesting from a user experience perspective over the last 24 months as many ERP solution providers have created enhanced user interfaces, often closely linked to the Microsoft Office and Outlook environment in order to provide better accessibility to a broader base of users.”
The report is available for download at www.lawson.com/smartofficereport.

Femtocells will deliver over US$5bn in savings, but only if operators do their homework

12 August 2008. Informa Telecoms & Media expects the number of femtocells deployed by the end of 2013 to exceed the 40 million mark, with 22 million net additions in 2013 alone. This installed base could help operators to offload up to 8% of total mobile traffic to fixed networks via the end-user subscriber line.

Clearly this could allow mobile operators to make significant savings by reducing the need to create additional macro-cell capacity to cope with this traffic. However, whether these savings materialise depends on a number of factors: the nature of the operator, the mobile access technology involved, the value proposition to the end-user, the region targeted, and the level of investments the operator has already made in upgrading its mobile network.

To handle the same amount of traffic carried by the 22 million femtocell deployments in 2013 would in theory require a US$13.8 billion investment in macrocell capacity. This is the potential sum if one takes into account capital expenditure related radio access infrastructure, operational costs and the mobile backhaul cost required for adding new macrocells to handle a traffic capacity equivalent to this carried over the new femtocell installed base.

However this theoretical figure assumes operators have no spare capacity in their existing networks and they have to build this capacity from scratch. In practice, when operators invest in widening the coverage of their networks they systematically create capacity redundancies, probably enough to handle a big part of this traffic anyway. Assuming that 33% of the required capacity is provided by the existing macrocell coverage, then macrocell infrastructure expenditure investment required to handle that amount of traffic is likely to be closer to US$ 9billion.

By comparison Informa Telecoms & Media estimates the capital expenditure related to implementing femtocell networks to support 22million new net additions would cost the industry about US$3.7billion, 85% of which goes to femtocell access points (FAPs). Thus, the industry could save US$5.3 billion or more in network infrastructure costs if femtocell solutions are properly deployed using meticulous geographic network planning.

Savings could be higher depending on whether these devices are fully subsidised or not. Also while there are potentials of savings in network expenditure when deploying 3.5G, WiMAX or LTE, this saving is less obvious for GSM/GPRS networks and WCDMA to a certain extent.

However this saving of US$5.3 billion or more could be undercut by the cost of marketing and promoting FAPs and femtocell services. ” Deploying femtocells requires a good understanding of market segmentation of both mobile consumer and household markets, meticulous planning and targeted marketing campaigns, which mean operators will have to invest substantial amount of money if they want femtocell services to gain popularity” said Malik Saadi, Principal Analysts and author of the report.

“In addition, if femtocells are sold to customers in sporadic fashion via traditional mobile operators' channels, then this may induce a huge scattering of femtocell deployment over large areas. Not only will this make it hard to manage FAPs and related networks but most importantly this would mean the operator will not be able to make any CAPEX or OPEX savings” he added.

n order for femtocell networks to effectively substitute the capacity of macrocell networks, they should be deployed in clusters otherwise their implementation could add additional burdens in terms of both capital and operation investments.

Whether operators make savings in terms of capital and operational expenditure will depend considerably on the individual operator, the mobile access technology supported, and on the region and type of area targeted. This means that operators will have to find ways of increasing both revenues and ARPU from femtocell services in order to make femtocells profitable.

AMD Launches World’s Fastest Graphics Card1

ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 X2 delivers up to 80 percent more performance than award-winning ATI Radeon™ HD 4870 2

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Aug. 12, 2008 —AMD (NYSE: AMD) today announced the world’s fastest graphics card, the ATI RadeonTM HD 4870 X2, advancing visual computing ever closer to “eye-def” gaming and cinematic experiences and delivering a whopping 2.4 teraFLOPS of processing power. Cisco Sends Top Malaysian Graduates to United States for Training

Local talent embark on fast-track to become certified Cisco engineers

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – August 12, 2008 – Cisco has selected four top Malaysian graduates to go for a one-year training programme in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, United States. The four are part of the global Cisco Associate Sales Engineer (ASE) programme that takes in talented engineering graduates from universities around the world and places them in a rigorous year-long orientation course. This is the first time Malaysia is participating in the programme.

The ASE programme helps develop a systems engineer’s sales, business, product and technical skills and equips them with the necessary skills set and relevant business acumen to address the changing needs of Cisco customers.

Tan and Mukhriz (front), Lim and Leong (back)

“Talent development has been one of the areas that Cisco has been most involved in and the ASE programme builds on our initiatives in this area which also include the Cisco Networking Academy programme. This is how Cisco is helping Malaysia build a highly-skilled base of knowledge workers that will help Malaysia compete in the increasingly competitive global market,” said Kumaran Singaram, managing director, Cisco Malaysia.

The four ASEs selected are Mukhriz bin Zakaria, a data communications and networking science graduate from MARA University of Technology Malaysia (UiTM); Lim Wei Chiang, a computer science graduate from University Malaya (UM); Leong Wai Seng, an electronic engineering degree holder; and Tan Wee Chun, an information technology graduate both from Multimedia University Cyberjaya (MMU).

The four were selected from a pool of Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) candidates nominated by Cisco’s Networking Academy instructors from six institutions i.e. MMU, UM, Technology University of Malaysia (UTM), UiTM, Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UNITEN) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UniKL). The candidates were evaluated based on their academic qualifications, communication skills, professional attitude, business acumen and diversity via a series of verbal exams, quizzes, certification scores and role plays. 16 candidates were then shortlisted to attend the Assessment Center held on 18 March 2008. After a stringent evaluation process, the four ASEs were identified.

“I did not know what to expect when I was appointed by the lecturer for the programme. However, I was thrilled with the opportunity to join a leading global company like Cisco. The interview process surprisingly focused less on technical aspects and emphasised more on our interpersonal skills, positive attributes and personality,” said Mukhriz.

The ASEs will undergo a rigorous training curriculum, which consists of about 80 per cent technology and 20 per cent soft skills training, including networking foundations and hands-on advanced technologies lab sessions. Towards the second half of the programme, the ASEs will be assigned to sales managers and be involved in actual customer engagements. At the end of the training, the ASEs will become fully-qualified Cisco systems engineers.

“I have always wanted to work with a great company like Cisco. This opportunity is indeed a career fast-track, as Cisco hires engineers with about five years of working experience. I expect to learn and acquire the necessary skill sets, so that I am ready to contribute to the business as soon as we are back here,” said Tan, who is also a high-achiever in academics, having consistently scored straight As in his public examinations history.

Additional quotes from ASEs

“This ASE programme is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and being the pioneer batch from Malaysia to participate in this programme, we will be benchmarked against participants from around the world. My goal is to learn as much as possible about Cisco’s technology and grasp the ability to work in a different cultural environment in order to maximise my contribution to the company when I come back.”
-- Lim Wei Chiang, University Malaya.

“I appreciate Cisco for seeking people beyond just technical skills. I believe I will be able to contribute my creativity and ability to think forward upon completion of the training.”
-- Leong Wai Seng, Multimedia University Cyberjaya.

Tyson Dowd, Senior Director, Malaysian Software Economy, Microsoft Malaysia
Saw Ken Wye, Vice President, Microsoft Asia Pacific
Dato’ Badlisham Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer, Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia (MDeC)
Yasmin Mahmood, Managing Director, Microsoft Malaysia
Saiful Shamlan, Vice President, Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia (MDeC)

At the official opening of Tech.Ed SEA 2008, Saw Ken Wye, Vice President of Microsoft Asia Pacific said that Microsoft is privileged once again to host one of the region’s most anticipated ICT events in Malaysia. He continued to say that Tech.Ed’s return was rooted strongly in the development and increased dynamism in the Asian IT industry as well as the vigorous growth of the local software economy.

“Microsoft is delighted to bring Tech.Ed back to Malaysia this year; the year-on-year response to from the ICT community has been tremendous and this includes increased number of participants this year and continued recognition as a premier industry conference by our corporate and industry partners such as the Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC), Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (MATRADE) and Human Resources Development Council (HRDC) amongst many. “This continued support towards Tech.Ed reflects the substance the conference offers to its participants; not merely a Microsoft-technology showcase but a holistic event to ready IT professionals and developers from Malaysia and the region for their part in the robust and vibrant development experience that is changing IT industries around Southeast-Asia.

“Tech.Ed is certainly one of the biggest initiatives that reflects Microsoft’s continued commitment to growing the Malaysian software economy; part of the RM26 million annual investments we make in programmes that foster innovation in the local software ecosystem,” Saw added.

Present also at the launch of Tech.Ed SEA 2008 was Dato’ Badlisham Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer, Multimedia Development Corporation of Malaysia; Tyson Dowd, Senior Director, Malaysian Software Economy at Microsoft Malaysia; and Ward Raldston, Group Technical Product Manager, Microsoft Corp., who delivered a keynote address titled “IT Heroes: Changing the World of Information Technology”.

Tech.Ed SEA 2008 will feature more than 100 breakout sessions across 12 key tracks, namely Architecture; Database platform; Developer tools and languages; Office & Sharepoint; Management; Security; SOA and Business Processes; Web and User Experience; Windows Client; Windows Mobile and Embedded; Windows Server Infrastructure and Unified Communications.

This year the conference features more than twice the number of track topics compared to the last Tech.Ed, complete with a whole host of information-loaded Instructor-Led Labs and Hands-on Lab sessions that will provide attendees with the opportunity to evaluate products, smart technologies and computing practices from both Microsoft and a number of its most important industry partners, said Dowd.

“The scale of the event is huge; we’re talking about 3,000 developers and IT professionals converging at one venue to learn, discuss and evaluate the newest technologies and issues that will drive the next wave of the ICT industry’s technology agenda. This is the reason many consider Tech.Ed to be amongst the crème de la crème of industry conferences, because of the sheer breadth and depth of the content available.

“Over the next four days, attendees will have the opportunity to pick the brains of some of Microsoft’s top executives and product team members like Ward Ralston, Steve Riley, Joel Oleson, Tony Krijnen and Loke Uei Tan. They will also hear success stories, case studies, deployment tactics from partners the world over, including those from Malaysia.

“We believe Tech.Ed is really a yearly one of a kind experience for our participants, and look forward to continue on this path of sharing and learning to move with the development of the IT environment in the region,” Dowd added.

Knowledge and Relevance Key in Growth of Local Software Economy
According to Dato’ Badlisham Ghazali, knowledge and expertise in current technology solutions are key factors that make IT professionals and developers relevant to the marketplace and evens the competition in the playing field. Therefore, information-rich conferences such as Tech.Ed SEA 2008 are much needed to cater to the education and awareness of the latest computing practices and technologies in the industry.

He said, “The decision to continue supporting and bringing leading ICT industry events such as Tech.Ed to Malaysia reflects on MSC Malaysia’s resounding determination to further encourage and drive the growth and development of the already performing local software economy.”

“MSC Malaysia is now home to over 2,000 local and multi-national technology companies involved in the various ICT sectors. Through collaborations with Microsoft over the years, these local software companies have gained tremendous technical insights and business guidance to create, market and benefit from their IT solutions. The recent release of the Malaysian Software Catalogue is reflective of this achievement; over 48 Microsoft-registered and certified companies have qualified for the catalogue’s worldwide ratings standard for quality performance in the local software sector, of which 22 are MSC Malaysia Status companies.

“Today there are 1177 knowledge workers supporting over 319 MSC Malaysia software companies which are actively running on the Microsoft platform. These companies have generated a substantial RM2.97 billion in revenue at the end of 2006, a move from the RM2.05 billion made in 2005; this reflects a tremendous 44% year-on-year growth in the software business sector. These companies are evidence of Microsoft’s capability and commitment in spurring growth and development via its Local Software Economy initiative,” Dato’ Badlisham added.

Tech.Ed SEA 2008 welcomes back regular attendees
Returning to Tech.Ed for its ninth edition, Lim Fun Jin, Technical Director at ISA Technologies Sdn. Bhd. is excited about being back at the conference, “Through the years, I have benefited from the depth of learning received at Tech.Ed, being able to translate the knowledge and technologies into business opportunities for my company.

“Looking at the breadth of track sessions that are available this year, we anticipate deeper insights into the latest technologies such as SQL Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008’s Hyper-V technology, which is going to provide technological breakthroughs that will greatly improve operation efficiencies for companies that utilize them,” added Lim.

NEXT-GENERATION INTEL PC CHIPS TO CARRY INTEL CORE NAME

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Aug. 11, 2008 – Intel Corporation announced today that desktop processors based on the company’s upcoming new microarchitecture (codenamed “Nehalem”) will be formally branded “Intel® Core™ processor.” The first products in this new family of processors, including an “Extreme Edition” version, will carry an “i7” identifier and will be formally branded as “Intel® Core™ i7 processor.” This is the first of several new identifiers to come as different products launch over the next year.

Products based on the new microarchitecture will deliver high performance and energy efficiency. This "best of both worlds" approach is expected to extend Intel’s processor leadership in future mobile, desktop and server market segments.

“The Core name is and will be our flagship PC processor brand going forward,” said Sean Maloney, Intel Corporation executive vice president and general manager, Sales and Marketing Group. “Expect Intel to focus even more marketing resources around that name and the Core i7 products starting now.”

The Intel Core processor brand name has gained broad awareness, preference, and market momentum over the past several years. The Intel Core name remains the logical choice for Intel’s latest family of processors. The Intel Core i7 processor brand logo will be available for high-performance desktop PCs with a separate black logo for Intel’s highest-end “Extreme Edition.” Intel will include processor model numbers to differentiate each chip.

Initial products based on this microarchitecture are expected to be in production in the fourth quarter of this year. These processors will feature Intel® Hyper-Threading Technology, also known as simultaneous multi-threading, and are capable of handling eight software “threads” on four processor cores.
