TM JOINS HOME GATEWAY INITIATIVE

Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) today announced that it has become a member of Home Gateway Initiative (HGI), hence strengthening its position as Malaysia’s leading integrated information and communications group.

By joining HGI, a global influential industry body representing the home networking space, TM will be able to benefit from knowledge transfer among the existing members of the body as well as strengthening its relationship with other global players. HGI also uses its broad member base to establish technical specifications that enable the interoperability of access gateways with multiple connected devices, and the implementation of end-to-end services in the Digital Home.

Commenting on the membership, Dato’ Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer of TM said, “We see the Home Gateway as a crucial device in continuing to excel in the quality delivery of advanced, next generation services to our residential and small and medium enterprise (SME) customers. Becoming a member of the HGI allows us to contribute to, and benefit from, the significant body of research, expertise and use case scenarios that the group has produced, as well as enhancing our relationships with the industry’s top players in the home network space.

“We have to take advantage of opportunities when they present themselves, and joining bodies such as HGI, is the best way to move the era of Next Generation Networks forward. Through synergy, co-operation and leverage, TM is confident to reap the full benefit from HGI and at the same time we are eager to contribute and play our role in HGI,” added Dato’ Zamzamzairani.

TM offers a comprehensive range of communication services and solutions in broadband, data and fixed-line. With its extensive global connectivity, TM is poised to position Malaysia as a regional Internet hub and digital gateway for South-East Asia. In line with this, TM is evolving into a Next Generation Network service provider enabling the Group to enhance its efficiency and productivity while providing enriched products and services.

“We are delighted with the addition of TM – one of the most important carriers in Asia - to the HGI membership," said HGI Chief Technical Officer, Duncan Bees. "Their input in identifying carrier needs in Asia, and the software and technology required to meet those needs, complements the skill and knowledge sets of our existing sixty-plus members. HGI is continuing to extend the service-enabling capabilities of the Home Gateway, and we look forward to the active contribution of TM in our continuing work in this dynamic, exciting space.”

The HGI was founded and launched by nine telecom operators (Belgacom, BT, Deutsche Telekom, France Telecom, KPN, TeliaSonera, NTT, Telefonica and Telecom Italia) in 2004, and now has more than 60 members from five continents, representing the entire spectrum of actors in the broadband home arena. The main tasks of the HGI are to establish home gateway-related technical and interoperability specifications and provide input to standardisation bodies.
