Ministry making an effort for better cyber safety

Kuala Lumpur--12 June 2012 – EC-Council Academy and the Malaysian Administrative Modernisation and Management Planning Unit (MAMPU) is proud to present a joint seminar entitled “Cyber Safety and Countermeasures” at the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development today.

There’s a large gap between internet users who are aware of potential cybercrime risks and those who are trained to protect themselves. The seminar’s intention is to close that gap and to encourage safer internet practices.

While simple safety steps and measures might seem irrelevant, it is still regarded as the first level of defense against threats. Cyber security experts often encourage the creation of multi-level security measures and many of the same experts often cite that the weakest link of often the users themselves.

Compromised systems and networks are now major grounds for loss of revenue, reputation and public trust. Cybercrime is clearly on the rise, yet only a few perceive to be at risk of falling for this threat, even fewer are prepared to mitigate the risk.

The seminar will address related issues such as security tools, technologies and threats and its impact to organizations and individuals.

“Cyber safety trainings should as essential as any other skills training – after all, it’s no longer realistic to leave cyber safety measures to the IT managers”, EC-Council Academy managing director Wilson Wong stated.

EC-Council Academy’s Wilson Wong also applauds Ministry of Rural and Regional Development for making the initiative towards increasing cyber safety awareness among their personnel.

Online security breaches – easy as ABC

Petaling Jaya, Malaysia – May 24, 2012
30 participants gathered at the Hackaway Hands-On Workshop, hosted by EC-Council Academy, to experience and witness - firsthand, how easy it is to penetrate everyday websites and systems.

The participants experienced both shock and awe as they witnessed basic level hacking. Clearly reflecting that the systems and websites they’ve developed, or use on a daily basis, are not ready to protect them or their customers from such attacks either.

Hacking is no longer a fancy term used to describe tech whiz with in-depth programming skills. The increased proficiency of today’s computer user has evolved to allow even the slightly curious users can access systems and data once hidden from public.

One in four computer users are victims of cybercrime – hackers who’s benefited from the data they’ve extracted from unsecured (or weakly secured) systems and website. Cybercrime is clearly on the rise, yet only a few perceive to be at risk of falling for this threat, even fewer are prepared to mitigate the risk.

According to the workshop leader, the local cybercrime count has increased by 117% in the past year, and this are only the reported cases. Many are said to be even unaware that they have fallen for such attacks.

With the society’s escalated reliance on internet technologies, malicious hacking should be treated no differently from physical robberies, break-ins and other frauds and crimes.

To increase awareness, EC-Council Academy Sdn Bhd hosts the Hackaway Hands-On Workshop. The workshop is divided into a series of modules including Hacking Simplified, Hack in the Air, and Insight of Wired and Wireless Hacking. Participants will have the opportunity to learn and experience attacks, spot vulnerable areas in websites we use every day, and of course, an introduction to better security.

The workshops are conducted 3 times a month; however, seats are limited in each class.
For more information on the workshop schedule and also how to register, please visit www.eccouncilacademy.org/hackaway or call +603 7665 0911.

IGNORANCE IS KEY TO ESCALATING CYBER TERRORISM & CYBER CRIME

Education needed to curb rampant cyber crime and terrorism, the EC-Council Asia Pacific Roundtable Forum (ECCRF) concludes.

KUALA LUMPUR, November 7, 2008 – “Everyone must be aware of the risks that cyber crime and cyber terrorism poses, as ignorance may lead to huge losses and even endanger lives” This was the unanimous response from the participants of the inaugural EC-Council Asia Pacific Roundtable Forum (ECCRF).

EC-Council, the world’s leading e-business and security certification organization hosted the inaugural Roundtable Forum at the Sunway Convention Centre in conjunction with the H@cker Halted Malaysia Conference on November 6, 2008. The objective of the roundtable forum is to let it be the platform for authorities and corporations to convene, discuss and develop strategies and defenses to ward off escalating cyber terrorism and cyber crimes.

Speaking at the press conference after the ECCRF ended yesterday, The President of EC-Council, Jay Bavisi said, “Cyber Crime and Warfare are not just found in science fiction movies, in retrospect it’s a daunting reality that affects every individual connected by a computer or technology. You may not be a hacker but your computer is a potential weapon for criminals to use to attack and damage countries, corporations and even mastermind the destruction of human lives.”

“Information security is not simply the responsibility of network administrators only, it is the responsibility of every internet user as their ignorance may result in millions of dollars in losses and even the loss of lives,” continued Jay.

“In this part of the world, incident reporting and disclosures are not mandatory. Thus many incidents are not reported by various agencies or corporations, as they fear that it will cause negative publicity among the public and their investors. The lack of education among both the users and authorities often results in allowing criminals easy access to even the most high tech security areas. No one treats a cyber crime like a murder case, often evidence cannot be used legally as it has been contaminated by the victim or the incident handler, allowing these criminals to escape prosecution,” said Mr Paul Wright, Head of Cyber Crime Unit, City of London Police. “

“Legislation, awareness and education among all levels right from the top management level to even security guards in any corporation are required to ensure the eradication of cyber crimes. The demise of a large corporation can be classified as a collateral damage to any nation. It is our responsibility to safeguard the nations interest.” added Jay.

The roundtable was chaired by Mr Jay Bavisi, and co-chaired by Prof Dr Lech J. Janczewski, Associate Professor of the University of Auckland, New Zealand and Chairman of the New Zealand Information Security Forum (Cyber Warfare) and Mr James Aquilina, Executive Managing Director for Stroz Friedberg LLC who has served as the Executive Committee Member of the California Law Review (Cyber Crime). Both the co-chairs are members of the EC-Council Honorary Council.

Panelists included Mr Paul Wright, Head of Cyber Crime Unit, London Police; Maj. Scott Applegate Ex-Chief, US Army Red Team; Mr Anthony Fung, Senior Investigator Microsoft APAC and Mr Richardus Eko Indrajit, Chairman of Indonesian Security-Incidence Response Team on Internet Infrastructure (ID-SIRTII) and the participants included representatives from MIMOS Berhad; Ministry of Defense; Technology Park Malaysia (TPM); National Institute of Public Administration (INTAN); Malaysian Nuclear Agency; Royal Malaysian Airforce (RMAF); Ministry of Science and Technology; Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and Science & Technology Research Institute for Defense (STRIDE).

The findings and recommendations that are collated and tabulated from the roundtable forum will be made available for the public and relevant agencies as part of EC-Council’s campaign to create increased awareness towards cyber terrorism and cyber crimes.
