The new Apple-designed A7 chip with 64-bit desktop-class architecture provides designers and engineers a much improved experience out of the gate when working with AutoCAD 360.
“We are thrilled to be the first professional application to be ready for prime time iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display. From a user’s perspective, navigating and editing large models will be snappier and much more fun,” said Jonathan Seroussi, director of AutoCAD web and mobile. “Users will see an immediate improvement in a number of functions such as rendering – render time is twice as fast in both navigation and editing.”
In addition to faster rendering, opening drawings is much faster, and selection is also twice as fast.
AutoCAD 360 is one of the most popular and widely used Autodesk mobile apps, with more than 5.5 million downloads on the App Store, more than 40 million uploaded drawings, and there are more than 1 million active monthly users on iOS alone.
AutoCAD 360, optimized for iPad Air and iPad mini with Retina display, will be available on the App Store.
AutoCAD 360’s compatibility with the new iPad is the latest evidence of the company’s ongoing commitment to development on Apple platforms. In addition to optimizing the user experience for the new iPad, Autodesk has already updated seven of its mobile apps to take advantage of iOS7. Users can now experience enhanced functionality with AutoCAD 360, BIM 360 Field, BIM 360 Glue, Sketchbook Mobile, 123D Creature Show, InfraWorks mobile and Pixlr on iOS7.
AutoCAD 2014 for Mac is Here!
Further demonstrating the company’s commitment to Apple platforms, it announced that Autodesk AutoCAD 2014 for Mac and Autodesk AutoCAD LT 2014 for Mac are available immediately.
Support for Retina display on the new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro, synchronization with Autodesk 360 and other enhancements make AutoCAD 2014 for Mac the most powerful 2D & 3D CAD application for Mac. AutoCAD 2014 for Mac is one of the first major professional software applications to include retina display support, which delivers a superior user experience. AutoCAD 2014 for Mac also boasts major improvements such as synchronization with the Autodesk 360 cloud platform, Package Drawing (like eTransmit on Windows), overall performance enhancements and UI improvements.
“AutoCAD for Mac users are extremely passionate, and we have worked hard to incorporate their top requests and feedback into this release,” said Amy Bunszel, vice president of AutoCAD products at Autodesk. “Customers will find the overall experience much faster and cleaner, enabling designers to be more efficient and collaborative with their teams.”
The enhancements in both AutoCAD 2014 for Mac and AutoCAD LT 2014 for Mac are the result of rigorous development work to give customers a better experience and connect them to the Autodesk 360 platform, giving customers access to cloud-based storage and collaboration capabilities. Other enhancements include:
• Retina Display Support: AutoCAD now fully supports the stunning, high-definition Retina display experience in the new 13- and 15-inch MacBook Pro throughout the user interface with crisper lines and text, easier-to-see tools, and a much higher level of detail even at high zoom levels.
• Drawing Sync: Directly access files from Autodesk 360 and synchronize them between your computer and the cloud.
• Package Drawing: Similar to eTransmit in AutoCAD for Windows, Package Drawing allows users to quickly collect related files into a compressed folder for easy distribution or storage.
• Online Help: We’ve made major changes to help find the assistance.
• Default Save--‐as--‐Previous Version: It's now possible to set a default save-as version for drawings.
• Software Security Enhancements: AutoCAD 2014 for Mac enhances software security and helps prevent loading and running of unauthorized or malicious AutoLISP applications.
“This latest release of AutoCAD for Mac provides new features that will help me tremendously in my day-to-day work,” said Jim LaPier, founder of IMPACT Designs, LLC, a US-based consulting firm that provides training and consulting on AutoCAD for Mac. “Support for the Retina display technology makes it the highest resolution CAD program ever, which means less eye strain for me and wonderfully clear drawings on my screen. My customers can't believe how clear their drawings look on my laptop! Also, help menus have been improved and settings that were hard to find have been showcased. Overall, it's a wonderful update to the program.”
New drawing sync feature allows customers to directly access files from Autodesk 360 and synchronize them between their computer and the cloud.
Larger screen format allows for better utilization of screen space.
Package Drawing allows users to quickly collect related files into a compressed folder for easy distribution or storage.
Specialized Mac features provide a better overall user experience.

Kaspersky Lab launches free app for secure web browsing on iPhone and iPad
PETALING JAYA, October 23, 2013 - Kaspersky Lab is pleased to announce the release of a new free app to ensure users are safe while surfing the web on their iPhone and iPad devices. The new Kaspersky Safe Browser for iOS is now available from the Apple App Store.
Like any Internet user, iPhone and iPad owners can fall victim to cyber attacks which use social engineering techniques. The most widespread example of this is phishing, which tricks users into providing their personal information through the use of fake websites or mass mailings that use the names and logos of well-known companies. The user could be tricked into sharing their passwords to a social networking site, email address, Apple ID account, and more.
According to a recent B2B International survey, 38% of mobile device owners use their gadgets to perform financial transactions, while one in three users encountered phishing attacks that posed as ebanking services.
Kaspersky Safe Browser for iOS blocks links to phishing sites and other web-based resources that can be dangerous for users. The new application can also filter content according to selected user criteria. This way, users can automatically block pornographic sites, material containing violence or profanity, gaming sites, social networks, chats, forums and more. There are 17 pre-defined content filtering categories in total.
Kaspersky Safe Browser for iOS provides real-time protection from known and emerging threats thanks to data it receives from Kaspersky Security Network, which processes threat intelligence delivered by users of Kaspersky Lab security products from around the world. The new application is compatible with Apple devices running iOS 5 and higher.
Alexey Chikov, Product Manager at Kaspersky Lab, commented: “Quite a few users of Apple products believe their devices are immune to cyber attacks. This false sense of security makes it easier for cybercriminals to execute their plans. Kaspersky Safe Browser for iOS protects users from dangerous content whenever they go online.”
Kaspersky Lab has solutions which can protect all kinds of devices – from smartphones to servers.
This autumn the company released Kaspersky Internet Security - Multi-Device, a key solution for home users designed for all Internet-connected devices: Windows and Mac- based computers as well as Android-based smartphones and tablets. The release of Kaspersky Safe Browser for iOS brings iOS-based devices into this secure ecosystem.

Ovum comments: Apple announces a raft of new products and price changes
Following the raft of new products and price changes announced by Apple recently, Jan Dawson, chief telecoms analyst at Ovum has the following initial comments:
“As expected, Apple took some cues from the iPad Mini in launching the new iPad Air, which is thinner and lighter, while adopting many of the internal improvements first seen in the iPhone 5S. This represents a good enough boost to the previous version to trigger good upgrade sales and get iPad shipments growing again, which was a key objective for this launch. However, the company also took a step back from the strategy it adopted when it launched the first iPad Mini. When that device launched, it was with a sub-par display and specs that matched the older iPad 2. The new iPad Mini and iPad Air both have top-of-the-line specs, and start at US$399, meaning that the minimum price for a high-performance iPad has actually gone up. Meanwhile, the iPad 2 and iPad Mini will remain on sale at lower prices, but with significantly less appeal given the gap in specs between them and the new iPads. It seems as though Apple is trying to push average selling prices for iPads back up again after they’ve dropped steadily over the past year. Both devices should sell very well, especially over the holiday period, but Apple held off being as disruptive as they might have been by pricing them relatively high.
“This is the clearest statement Apple could have made that it is only interested in competing in the premium tablet space. The yawning gap between the specs of the cheaper iPad Mini and iPad 2 and the new iPads signifies that it is only willing to compete at the lower price points with older models. This leaves a huge chunk of the tablet market unserved by Apple while others such as Google, Amazon and a raft of others aggressively target the sub-US$400 market. This reinforces our view that Apple’s share in tablets will continue to fall as Android’s share rises over the coming years.
“Though the iPad news will generate the headlines, the changes to Apple’s software licensing for Mac OS X, iLife and iWork is also important, not least for Microsoft. Microsoft generates 96 percent of its operating margins from operating system and productivity software licensing, and Apple is now teaching people to expect both of those things to be free. While this won’t disrupt Microsoft’s business overnight, it will create further pressure on Microsoft to bring down prices for its productivity software and especially for Windows.
“This is yet another example of one of the keys to being a successful player in the consumer tech market: using your core business to subsidize low-cost or free products in other categories. Amazon uses its e-commerce and digital sales to fund devices, Google uses advertising revenue to fund its software and services, and Apple is now using hardware to subsidize software across the board. The big question is, what can Microsoft do to compete, when its cash cow is being eroded by these moves from its competitors?”

AIG Malaysia Insurance Berhad launches CyberEdge, a comprehensive and unique cyber insurance solution
Asia Pacific CEOs and CIOs need to get serious about cyber risk management, says AIG Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR, 4 June 2013 – AIG, one of the world’s leading insurers, today launched the comprehensive cyber insurance solution in Malaysia in response to growing cyber threats. The company also called on CEOs and CIOs to get serious about cyber threats, saying current corporate risk management practices in Malaysia are still in its infancy and need to be developed further to address cyber threats.
AIG AVP of Financial Lines, Ms. Emily Poh said: “Malaysian businesses are unprepared for cyber risks, CEOs and CIOs need to get serious about managing their cyber risks.”
The alarming growth in cyber breaches dominates world headlines today. About 75 per cent of organizations have experienced some form of a cyber incident, yet awareness of cyber risk remains low. Cyber attacks also increased threefold in 2012 when compared to 2011, with 51 per cent of attacks originating from the Asia Pacific region .
The costs of cyber attacks are enormous and growing. Cyber attacks, often in the form of data breaches and network security intrusions, can impact operations, frequently result in lost productivity, legal expenses, third party liabilities, exposed intellectual property, and damage to a firm’s reputation.
“A corporate risk management framework needs to address cyber exposures, yet many risk managers in Malaysia rarely evaluate cyber risk. Companies need to proactively manage cyber risks across the organization, and this priority should be driven from the boardroom,” Ms. Poh said.
Roundtable to discuss cyber security landscape in Malaysia. From L-R:
o Ms. Myla Pilao, Director, Core Technology Marketing, TrendLabs, Trend Micro
o Mr. Paul Subramaniam, Knowledge Management and Training Partner, ZICOlaw
o Mr. Anwer Yusoff, Head, Innovation and Commercialisation, CyberSecurity Malaysia
o Ms. Gigi Cheah, Partner, Intellectual Property and Technology practice, Norton Rose, Singapore / Hong Kong
o Ms. Emily Poh, Assistant Vice President, Financial Lines, AIG
The rise in cyber threats prompted AIG to develop a new specialised insurance product called CyberEdge, a unique and comprehensive cyber coverage solution for Malaysian companies. It provides an insurance solution for cyber liabilities exposure that current commercial insurance policies may not cover.
Launched today, CyberEdge is especially designed to address the consequences of losing corporate information and personal data from cyber threats, and covers companies’ liability arising from breaching data protection laws.
AIG also recently launched the CyberEdge free-to-download mobile app for iPads, a business tool that addresses the demand for improved information on cyber risk and how to respond to it. Ms. Soo Wai Har, Senior Vice President, Commercial Lines and Deputy CEO, AIG Malaysia, commented that AIG is pleased to offer businesses Malaysia’s first CyberEdge mobile app for the iPad: “The App features the latest cyber news, real-time information on country-wide data breaches, a breach cost calculator, an events calendar and a glossary of common cyber terms.”
Ms. Soo was of the view that technology trends such as social networking, the proliferation of mobile devices, and cloud computing, will cause the risks to data security to grow. These trends highlight an even greater need for organizations in the country to vigorously protect data.
Ms. Poh who shared Ms. Soo’s sentiment on the importance of data security said, “Managing cyber risk used to be the domain of Information Technology service providers. Now that the consequences of cyber attacks are so far reaching, damaging corporate reputation and strategic business plans, all levels of an organization from the Chairman down, need to take action to protect against cyber threats.”
“Insurance can provide financial protection against cyber risks and CyberEdge helps organizations in Asia strengthen their defenses against cyber threats,” Ms. Poh added.

New SaaS-Based iPad App from CA Technologies Empowers CXOs to Strategically Manage Technology Investments
CA Clarity Playbook Bridges Gap Between Strategic Planning and Operational Execution
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia April 24, 2013 -- CA WORLD -- CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) today announced CA Clarity™ Playbook, an innovative mobile application that uniquely empowers CXOs to strategically manage their organization’s technology investments in the context of their high-level business goals and objectives—right from their iPads.
Delivered via a SaaS model, CA Clarity Playbook also makes it easy for CXOs to quickly collaborate with key process stakeholders and respond more quickly to changing business needs anywhere, any time.
"IT and the business have to work hand-in-hand to create new revenue streams and deliver a differentiated brand experience—even in the face of finite structural and human resources, " said Lokesh Jindal, general manager, Service and Portfolio Management, CA Technologies. "CA Clarity Playbook enables this critical coordination by giving executives the ability to nimbly adapt plans, activities and priorities."
CA Clarity Playbook integrates with CA Clarity PPM and other systems of record to provide CXOs with the intuitive dashboard-style mobile workspace they need to:
• Define strategic objectives, goals and initiatives;
• Collaborate with stakeholders on strategic plans;
• Leverage information from operational systems;
• Assess alignment of IT investments with business objectives;
• Visualize investment financials in real time; and
• Evaluate impact of new priorities on in-place plans.
According to a research study* by CA Technologies, few CIOs are directly involved in defining business strategy—even though 73 percent of business executives acknowledge that IT is central to the execution of that strategy.
CA Clarity Playbook helps address this disconnect by liberating CXOs from the manual, annual planning cycles of the past, so they can more proactively take advantage of emerging business opportunities and technological innovations.
"With the increasing use of technology by patients and healthcare providers, a successful business strategy in the healthcare industry should be driven by a strong technology strategy," said R. John Ragsdale, Chief Information Officer, BerylHealth. “To grow our business in the midst of this Health Information Technology explosion, we need to embrace strategic planning disciplines and tools that increase our innovation and speed-to-market—and that improve technology visibility and decision-making for our C-level executives."
CA Clarity Playbook can draw from information sources both in the cloud and across the enterprise to keep strategic initiatives on track and aligned to organizational goals. Users can access CA Clarity Playbook workspace from an iPad app or from a tablet or desktop running an HTML5-compatible web browser.
“To successfully cope with today’s intense time-to-market pressures, business leaders need the same kind of real-time, multi-dimensional visibility into IT as they have into sales pipelines and supply chains,” said Jeffrey M. Kaplan, managing director of THINKstrategies, Inc. and founder of the Cloud Computing Showplace. “It has simply become impractical for them to continue depending on periodic second-hand IT reporting that can’t be dynamically queried and is often out-of-date by the time it arrives on their desks.”
CA Clarity Playbook is a key enabler of the broader CA Technologies Business Service Innovation initiative, which enables customers to more effectively accelerate, transform and secure IT to adaptively meet the intensifying challenges of competition in a global information economy.
“IT is adopting more complex and fluid service provisioning models at the same time as it is becoming increasingly integral to the business,” said Cameron McNaught, Senior Vice President and Head of Cloud and Strategic Solutions, International Business, Fujitsu Limited. “With CA Clarity Playbook, CA Technologies is directly responding to this confluence of complexity and criticality with a solution that gives corporate managers much-needed control of technology resource allocation and performance.”

CA Technologies Delivers a Clear Path for Mainframe Customers to Embrace the Future of the Dynamic Data Center
Strategy Will Enable Customers to Take Advantage of the Dynamic Data Center Across Mainframe, Distributed and Cloud
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia April 24, 2013 – CA WORLD – CA Technologies (NASDAQ: CA) today announced a strategic direction to help mainframe customers embrace the future dynamic data center and move closer to the ideal state of unbounded business enablement at zero cost.
The company has made significant new investments in mainframe solutions to provide customers with the tools to manage data centers with utmost reliability, security and speed.
“Information technology is in the midst of a tremendous change cycle,” said Michael Madden, general manager, Mainframe. “We have responded with a strategy that serves the evolving requirements of the data center, including cost-effectiveness, data security and speed and a fantastic end-to-end customer experience.”
Once bound by on-premise facilities, data centers today are a dynamic mix of on-premise and virtual computing power. CA Technologies is substantially evolving its mainframe management solutions to make such dynamic data centers possible and aligned to meet business needs.
The CA Technologies Mainframe strategy will help customers by:
• Sustaining investments in foundational technologies that are critical to the evolution of data centers and the modern mainframe;
• Collaborating closely with customers on product design to help CA Technologies develop products that meet customers’ most critical IT needs; and
• Streamlining for savings and return on investment through the company’s Mainframe Software Rationalization Program (MSRP), which assesses customers’ portfolio needs and can help them to realize estimated savings of up to $1.4 million* a year.
CA Technologies is making great strides in delivering a mainframe portfolio that helps customers transition to the dynamic data center—one that delivers business services seamlessly across mainframe, distributed systems and the cloud.
• Extensive Mainframe Portfolio: includes integrated products designed to cut the total cost of ownership for customers, and deliver lower licensing costs, simple installation processes and easy upgrades.
• CA Mainframe Chorus: focuses on a unique user experience rather than on applications for a robust mainframe management platform that lets users create dashboards to manage DB2, workload automation and other functions all from one place.
• CA Workload Automation: integrates the user experience across the hybrid computing environment of mainframe, distributed and cloud. The solution includes several new capabilities that help customers reduce complexity and proactively manage and anticipate the needs of the dynamic data center.
• CA Technologies World-Class Support: the company recently earned the NorthFace ScoreBoard AwardSM (NFSB) for customer service excellence, demonstrating its dedicated focus on customers. CA Communities, CA Technologies online user community, provides customers with direct access to its more than 38,000 company experts, partners and users.
The mainframe is a workhorse in the backend of much of today’s critical business, and CA is busy enabling other capabilities in its portfolio to work with mainframe solutions, to provide a seamless and successful customer experience across distributed, cloud and mobile operations.
“Our unique advantage is that we can manage virtual data centers from soup to nuts,” said Madden. “We can tie everything together and manage it holistically when we bring the full CA Technologies portfolio to bear.”

SUBMISSIONS FOR MAXIS’ EBOOK WRITING COMPETITION NOW AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC FOR FREE DOWNLOADS
• Maxis recently collaborated with Xentral Methods Sdn Bhd, a local digital platform, to organise Malaysia’s first ebook writing competition
• Submissions now available for previews and free downloads on Maxis’ ebook service and e-Sentral until 25 April 2013
• The ebook with the highest number of downloads will be selected as one of the five winners
Kuala Lumpur, 4 April 2013. Maxis Berhad (Maxis), Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider, is pleased to announce that the ebook submissions from the competition launched a month ago in collaboration with local digital platform, Xentral Methods Sdn Bhd (e-Sentral), will be available for previews and free downloads by the public on Maxis’ ebook service at http://ebuuk.com.my and e-Sentral’s website at http://esentral.com.my until 25 April 2013.
The authors of the five most downloaded ebooks will be selected as the winners and receive an iPad each, while the author of the most downloaded book will also receive a Professional Editorial and Publishing Consultation on how to publish and commercialise their work on digital platforms.
In February, Maxis and e-Sentral launched Malaysia’s first ebook writing competition which was open to all Malaysians aged 18 and above, with the aim of discovering Malaysia’s next generation of writers by providing an alternative platform for them to highlight their work and also help them reach a wider audience. Aspiring writers were able to submit their short fiction ebooks either in English or Bahasa Malaysia (one author per submission) between 1 February and 15 March 2013, to the official Ebook Competition Facebook page at www.facebook.com/EbookCompetition.
T Kugan, Maxis’ Head of Product, Device, Innovation and Roaming, said, “We are thrilled that this competition has received such a positive response from the public, especially from young writers aged 25 and below, who made up a majority of the submissions. We are also pleased to see them embracing technology as a medium to unleash their creativity and make their work known. We now encourage the public to start downloading and vote for their favourite stories.
“Maxis has been a leader in bringing innovation to the market by continuously building a data-friendly ecosystem to provide customers a richer digital experience through a wide range of digital content. With this competition, we are further strengthening this proposition by giving customers access to innovative and exclusive content which is only available through our ebooks service,” Kugan added.
Aspiring writer Michele Chia Yuen Yee, 22, from Petaling Jaya, said, “Even as a little girl, I've always wanted to be a novelist/writer. I am still working on that dream and several novels, in the hopes that one day I can be Malaysia's Meg Cabot or Sophie Kinsella, who are my absolute book author idols. My aspiration is to make readers feel the way these great writers make me feel whenever I read one of their books - absolutely magical and transported, forgetful of the world around me.”
Another passionate writer, Jay Anil Singh Shemar, 18, from Rawang, Selangor, said “What inspired me to write was my passion for writing tales that normally do not leave the classroom. Through this competition, I hope to be given the opportunity to be recognised as a potential author. Perhaps to even be offered publishing deal!”
While these aspiring writers were thrilled at the prospect at winning the competition, some had used the competition as an opportunity to demonstrate their skills as writers for the longer term.
When asked what she hopes to achieve from the competition, Ezzah Fatin Jemain, 21, from Skudai, Johor said, “I hope this this will become an encouragement and a motivation for myself that the world of a writer is limitless. Winning is certainly a bonus, but losing doesn't mean this should stop!”
“It would be great to win but at this point, I am quite happy to find a place to showcase my writing to a wider audience other than my immediate family and friends. I also hope to write for different mediums such as TV and film,” said Adlina Amiruddin, 29, from Shah Alam, Selangor
Meanwhile, 20-year old Muhammad Iqbal Ibrahim from Pulau Pangkor said, "Winning is not the first thing that I hope from this competition. I can accept it if I don’t win. I only hope my work is read by the readers out there. That is what will make me happy. When this competition ends, I hope that the readers will continue to read my next book."
Last year, Maxis launched Malaysia's first integrated digital book service, or ebooks, which can be used across devices. With the service, Maxis customers have access to a selection of over 300,000 international and local ebooks from over 40 categories. Maxis ebooks features a user-friendly interface and runs on a cloud-based digital bookstore, where customers can download books for free onto their iPads or Android tablets, anytime and anywhere they want. As part of this service, Maxis is also looking to nurture the growth of local books and content by partnering with local publishers, authors and educational institutions to grow the amount of local content in its digital library. To date, Maxis has already partnered with Cempaka Schools to eventually distribute learning content comprising publications and reference materials by its teachers through Maxis ebooks, enabling students to digitally access such content.
Further information on Maxis ebooks can be found at www.ebuuk.com.my and the app can be downloaded for free from Google Play and Apple's App Store.

2012 Top 10 Data Disasters by Kroll Ontrack
Every year we handle 50,000 data recoveries globally. Some of the data loss scenarios are quite common whereas others can leave even our clean room engineers surprised. This year's list, all of which were successful data recoveries performed by engineers in various Kroll Ontrack offices worldwide, indicates that the increasing reliance on electronic data and reliability of technology is often compromised by human error.
The Top 10 data disasters are our engineers' view of the most interesting data loss scenarios they see each year.
1. Don't ignore blinking RED lights
SPAIN
A server with a RAID5 configuration was brought into the Kroll Ontrack Madrid office after numerous people in an office noticed a red blinking light on the front panel warning that one of the disk drives had failed. The IT manager said the light didn't mean anything but within three weeks, after a second disk drive failed, the data became inaccessable. Kroll Ontrack restored 100 per cent of the data.
2. Sweeping illness
USA
Viruses can be silent and deadly, so when a malware attack infected 30,000 workstations at a Middle Eastern oil company, swift efforts were required to cease the damage and restore business continuity. Kroll Ontrack not only identified the virus as the damage culprit, but recovered data from several critical servers and workstations.
3. Careful driver
POLAND
A man pulled into a shopping centre and parked his car. When he opened his door, he noticed that he had parked across two spaces. He got back in and shut the door, not noticing that he had dropped his camera on the ground outside. As he re-corrected his parking several times, he felt something under the tyre, which turned out to be his camera. Kroll Ontrack was able to recover the photos and videos.
4. Disgruntled employee
USA
After an employee was fired, he took solace at a fast-food chain and plotted his revenge. This included logging on to the network he still had access to and deleting as much data as he could get his hands on using the restaurant's free Wi-Fi. The story had a happy ending, as terabytes of data were recovered and the culprit was identified by matching his food purchase order and payment information to the time of the crime and network used to delete the data.
5. Lost in transit
USA
A city worker put his backpack, containing his iPad, down on the footpath to give his shoulder a break while waiting for the bus. The bus pulled up, but before letting on the passengers, the driver realised the bus was obstructing the footpath. The city worker didn't pick up his backpack in time, and the bus crushed its contents, including the iPad. Despite the extensive physical damage to the electronics, the data was recovered by Kroll Ontrack.
6. Slippery hands
UK
An iPad®, containing important drilling data, was dropped off the side of a Nigerian oil rig. While water is the most common cause of damage to mobile devices, this incident, involving salt water, proved to be no problem for Kroll Ontrack.
7. Erase all traces
AUSTRALIA
When an Australian pool and spa shop was being robbed, the burglars decided to hide all the evidence by pouring the large stock of hydrochloric acid on the shop floor and counters, consequently damaging the shop's computer and point of sale terminal. The shop owner was able to get a very smelly drive to the local Kroll Ontrack lab, and although the computer was very badly damaged, all the data was recovered.
8. Lost in the desert
AUSTRALIA
Imagine working in one of the most challenging and remote environments of the world and being confronted with a serious data loss. This is what happened to a resources company in the Gobi Desert. They accidently deleted a VMware® machine and several snapshots. Luckily, IT got in touch with Kroll Ontrack, and via a satellite link, a remote data recovery session was quickly established. The link enabled Kroll Ontrack engineers to work around-the-clock, and data was recovered in a much shorter time than originally anticipated.
9. Don't drink and work!
POLAND
A graphic designer about to finish a beautiful 3D logo for a customer, decided to have a drink to celebrate. When he returned from the kitchen to admire his work, he accidently knocked over the glass - giving his computer a chance to take a sip. The project was gone, and so was the designer's happiness. Kroll Ontrack was able to recover the data.
10. Rinse cycle
FRANCE
A woman placed her external hard drive in a basket of dirty-laundry and carried it downstairs. The family cat strategically placed itself on the laundry, which obscured the view of the drive from the woman's boyfriend, who shooed away the cat and quickly loaded the clothes in the washing machine. On went the machine and away went the data. Kroll Ontrack was able to recover the data.
