Nikon Malaysia Goes Green

I AM A Tree Guardian

Shah Alam, 13 December 2012 – Some 69 employees and family members of Nikon Malaysia spent a productive Saturday morning getting back to nature and greening the environment with the planting of 48 trees (Gardenia Carinata) at the National Botanical Garden, Shah Alam.

‘I AM A Tree Guardian’ was the event theme and this was clearly emblazoned on the T-shirts of the Nikon team members who gathered at Danau Perikanan. After a briefing by park officials on tree planting techniques, the participants quickly got to work at designated areas armed with shovels, hoes and gloves. Once completed, participants tagged their trees to signify their tree adoption. For every tree adopted by employees, families and friends, Nikon matched and sponsored an equal number of trees.

Heading the Nikon Malaysia CSR Committee was Ms. Tan Siak Jin (General Manager -Designate, Nikon (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.) who gave a short welcome speech, thanking everyone for helping to preserve Mother Nature. This initiative is in line with Nikon Group’s commitment to implement its corporate philosophy of Trustworthiness and Creativity through Corporate Social Responsibility activities.

“The National Botanical Garden is the perfect setting for Nikon Malaysia to carry out this initiative as the garden acts as a center for educating and cultivating awareness to the community about the role of plants and forests as part of the ecosystem. The tree-planting initiative also helped to create greater awareness of the importance of the environment and encourage our staff and families to be part of the carbon offset solution,” said Ms Tan Siak Jin.

Said Mr. Kon Kuen Kong (Service Manager, Consumer Product), “It was a great opportunity for Nikon employees to foster a spirit of togetherness and team spirit through this exercise, as everyone is always so busy with work. It was extremely tiring, but there is a sense of satisfaction and we also get to interact with our colleagues from different departments.”

Mr. Mahfooz NR, Senior Manager of Nikon Professional Services, who also brought along his son, added that the event also cultivated a love for Mother Nature and the environment among the participants, which Nikon Malaysia is committed to uphold.

Although it was a hard day’s work, the smiles and sense of achievement radiating from the participants’ faces made it all worthwhile. Nikon Malaysia is looking forward to organize more future CSR activities for its employees and to play a vital role in environmental conservation.

Previous CSR activities organized by Nikon Malaysia also saw Nikon Malaysia instilling the love of photography in children from three orphanages through an educational photography workshop conducted by Nikon personnel.
