15-Year-Old Scientist Creates Machine Learning Software Tool to Detect Cancer-Causing Gene Mutations

Nathan Han of Boston Wins US$75,000 Top Prize at Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

The world’s largest high school science research competition, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public, announced its top winners in Los Angeles.
Nathan Han of Boston received the Gordon E. Moore Award, a US$75,000 prize named in honor of the Intel co-founder and fellow scientist.
Four Malaysian students recognized for chemistry and environmental projects.
Two Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards winners – Lennart Kleinwort of Germany and Shannon Lee of Singapore – each received prizes of US$50,000 from the Intel Foundation.

LOS ANGELES, May 16, 2014 – Nathan Han, 15, of Boston was awarded first place for developing a machine learning software tool to study mutations of a gene linked to breast cancer at this year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public.

Using data from publicly available databases, Han examined detailed characteristics of multiple mutations of the BRCA1 tumor suppressor gene in order to “teach” his software to differentiate between mutations that cause disease and those that do not. His tool exhibits an 81 percent accuracy rate and could be used to more accurately identify cancer threats from BRCA1 gene mutations. Han received the Gordon E. Moore Award of US$75,000, named in honor of the Intel co-founder and fellow scientist.

From Malaysia, Faye Jong-Sow Fei from Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Batu Lintang, Kuching, Sarawak received a First Award of US$3,000 in the Environmental Management Category for her project entitled ‘Bio-Waste Materials as Eco-Friendly Mordant in Fabric Dye Process’. She has also won the Top Winner of the Best of Category with prizes consisting of US$5,000 cash and US$1,000 cash for her school and the affiliated fair she represents. In addition, Faye Jong walked away with an all-expense-paid trip to attend the European Union Contest for Young Scientists in Warsaw, Poland this August.
Nurul Najiha Binti Mohd Roslan and Nur Hanis Suriani Binti Mohd Zaini of Mara Junior Science College Terendak, Melaka were awarded a Third Place Award  of US$1,000 for the Environmental Sciences category and First Place Award of US$500.00 for the Special Award category from Drexel Smart House for their ‘New Discovery of Eco Plyfibre via Pineapple Leaf and Recyclable Plastic for Future Sustainability’. Furthermore, Meor Zulhilmi Syahir Ahmad Shohailee from the Tun Syed Sheh Shahabudin Science Secondary Boarding School Pulau Pinang was given a Certificate of Honorable Mention from American Chemical Society for his chemistry project ‘Carbonized Pineapple Peel (CPP) Waste as Low Cost Adsorbent for Acid and Reactive Dyes Removal.’

Lennart Kleinwort, 15, of Germany received one of two Intel Foundation Young Scientist Awards of US$50,000. Kleinwort developed a new mathematical tool for smartphones and tablets that brings capabilities to hand-held devices that previously required more sophisticated and expensive computing tools. His app allows users to hand draw curves, lines and geometric figures on the touch screen and watch the system render them into shapes and equations that can then be manipulated at will.

Shannon Xinjing Lee, 17, of Singapore received the other Intel Foundation Young Scientist Award of US$50,000 for developing a novel electrocatalyst that may be used for batteries of the future. Researchers have been looking for ways to make rechargeable zinc-air batteries practical, as they would be safer, lighter in weight, and have six times the energy density of lithium ion batteries, making them ideal for hybrid vehicles. Lee found that her activated carbon catalyst, which she made entirely from carbonized Chinese eggplant, greatly out-performed a more sophisticated commercial catalyst in stability and longevity tests and will be environmentally friendly and inexpensive to produce.

“The world needs more scientists, makers and entrepreneurs to create jobs, drive economic growth and solve pressing global challenges,” said Prakash Mallya, Country Manager, Intel Malaysia and Singapore. “Intel believes that young people are the key to innovation, and we hope that these winners inspire more students to get involved in science, technology, engineering and math, the foundation for creativity.”

This year’s Intel International Science and Engineering Fair featured more than 1,700 young scientists selected from 435 affiliate fairs in more than 70 countries, regions and territories. In addition to the top winners, more than 500 finalists received awards and prizes for their innovative research, including 17 "Best of Category" winners, who each received a US$5,000 prize. The Intel Foundation also awarded a US$1,000 grant to each winner’s school and to the affiliated fair they represent. Additionally, the Intel Foundation presented a select number of students with experiential awards, including the new 11-day trip to China to attend the country’s largest national science competition, speak with researchers at Intel’s lab in Shanghai, and visit the Panda Research Base in Chengdu.

IBM Introduces ‘IBM ExperienceOne’ to Help Organizations Bring Together Marketing, Sales and Services Practices to Deepen Customer Engagement

Integrated portfolio of cloud and on premise offerings help clients coordinate and enrich engagement throughout the customer journey

PETALING JAYA – 16 May 2014:  At its Smarter Commerce Global Summit in Tampa, IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced ‘IBM ExperienceOne,’ a new integrated portfolio of cloud-based and on premise offerings that help clients quickly deliver deeper, more valuable customer engagements by bringing together marketing, sales and service practices.

According to IBM’s recent survey of nearly 4,200 C-suite leaders, more than half are reinventing their organizations to drive greater customer collaboration. The study showed companies that outperform peers are focused on delivering customer value through each interaction, including those with downstream partners and suppliers. This deeper engagement is a universal ambition with 90 percent of CxOs expecting to increase customer collaboration.

Built on best practices working with more than 8,000 organizations worldwide, IBM ExperienceOne delivers a set of pre-defined engagement solutions delivered with IBM consulting services and powered by its leading WebSphere Commerce, Customer Digital Experience and Enterprise Marketing Management software. IBM ExperienceOne is now available at www.ibm.com/ExperienceOne.

“Smarter Commerce is about helping clients continuously reinvent themselves around the customer experience,” said Craig Hayman, General Manager, Industry Cloud Solutions, IBM. “IBM ExperienceOne provides a secure and simplified portfolio – including innovation from more than 1,200 partners – to help clients design and deliver more valuable customer engagements.  With cloud, on premise and hybrid options, IBM ExperienceOne quickly scales to engage every customer in the moment while protecting their privacy.”

IBM ExperienceOne draws on innovation from IBM research as well as more than $3 billion invested in organic development and acquisitions such as Sterling Commerce, Tealeaf, Coremetrics, Unica, DemandTec, Xtify and most recently Silverpop, a provider of cloud-based personalized marketing solutions. It is delivered with market-leading consulting, agency and system integration services from the IBM Interactive Experience practice, as well as the company’s $100 million investment to open 10 IBM Interactive Experience labs and add 1,000 employees to help clients deepen engagement through data-driven design.

As part of today’s news, IBM added new and enhanced software capabilities that support three of the new engagement solution sets:

  •     -- Understand Your Customers:  At the heart of this solution set is IBM’s newly integrated Digital, Behavioral, Social Media and Predictive Customer analytics offering to help clients identify real-time trends based on internal and external customer data.  It features new mobile analytics that can replay individual user sessions on both Android and iOS device apps, enabling marketers and commerce professionals to pinpoint the exact moment when a customer decided to browse, buy or abandon a transaction.
  •     -- Maximize Sales, Profit and Loyalty:  This solution set helps clients quickly act on insights and maximize customer value using IBM's enhanced omni-channel merchandising capabilities.  It enables merchandising professionals to automate price optimization, maintain real-time transparency and competitive pricing across all physical and digital channels to deliver the right offer to the right customer at the right time.
  •     -- Deliver Empowering Digital Experiences:  As the gateway to each customer touch point, this solution set is supported by enhancements to IBM’s customer digital experience software.  Marketing, sales and service professionals now can more easily leverage dynamic customer, pricing and performance analytics by embedding real-time offers into their mobile, social and rich media experiences. The real-time offer engine automates personalization across the customer experience at scale, increasing engagement, satisfaction and sales.

IBM also introduced three new cloud business solutions to give clients more flexibility in how they buy and deploy IBM ExperienceOne. These solutions combine consulting services, IBM ExperienceOne software and cloud infrastructure powered by SoftLayer, an IBM company. They include:

  •     -- Customer Data as a Service:  Enables clients to combine disparate customer data from internal and external sources to improve marketing performance and revenue growth.
  •     -- Customer Analytics as a Service:  Helps organizations quickly identify new customer trends, anticipate future behavior and suggest next best actions to deepen engagement.
  •     -- Digital Commerce as a Service:  Allows business leaders to deliver exceptional digital experiences and accelerate time to market for a range of customer engagement solutions from order capture through fulfillment.

Leading specialty retailer American Eagle Outfitters is one of many organizations using IBM's analytics capabilities to better understand their customers as unique individuals, helping to ensure that every interaction is an exceptional brand experience.

“American Eagle Outfitters is a deeply customer centric company, and we lean heavily on IBM’s customer experience management solution to clearly understand real customers’ experiences, and then work to identify, understand, and remove pain points,” said Joe Megibow, Senior Vice President and General Manager Omnichannel, American Eagle.  “With IBM’s solutions, we can deliver higher quality experiences for our customers, resulting in more relevant engagements and improved brand loyalty.”

Seven out of the top ten commercial banks, financial services companies and U.S. retailers today use IBM’s customer engagement solutions.

Acer Unveils New Visual Identity for its BYOC™ (Build Your Own Cloud) Brand

TAIPEI, TAIWAN (May 15, 2014) Acer today unveiled its new visual identity for BYOC™ (Build Your Own Cloud). As previously announced, and under the direction of the new Acer leadership team, Acer is transforming from a hardware company into a “hardware + software + services” company as it embraces new opportunities in the cloud technology era.

This change is being accomplished through championing the foundation and spirit that the company was built on. Acer has always believed that sustainable success comes from balancing the interests of consumers, shareholders, business partners, employees and communities. And its mission has been to break down barriers between people and technology.

Acer has always been prepared to take an unconventional route and today’s introduction of the visual identity of its BYOC brand is another example of a ground breaking approach.

Acer Chairman Stan Shih said, “Acer is continuing its decades-long tradition of challenging convention by completely redefining the meaning of the cloud for consumers and businesses; it is therefore highly appropriate that the new, powerful and distinctive visualization of BYOC conveys this message.”

For consumers, BYOC is a differentiated solution which allows you to create a cloud that lives on your own device wherever you are, yet with ultimate privacy and security. This means that the storage capacity of your cloud can be as big as you want. With BYOC your digital life is synced wirelessly and simultaneously across your entire ecosystem of devices regardless of the network connection, operating system or brand of device. As part of BYOC, Acer is also introducing a suite of software products to help organize personal content, such as music, photos and files.

For businesses, BYOC is also truly breaking down barriers. Now any company, in any industry, can create a cloud-based solution with Acer’s open platform. By using BYOC, companies can build a multi-network, cross-platform, multi-device cloud without a significant investment in time and resources. Any company with an idea can build their own cloud for all connected devices in the new PC world and the Internet of Things (IoT). Simply put, better solutions get in the hands of end users faster.

In creating the new BYOC logo, it is important to convey the key message that this is Acer’s vehicle to leap over current technology and introduce a new era of cloud computing. To this end, Acer has been inspired by the ancient Chinese novel, Journey to the West, in which the character Sun WuKong travels on a cloud and uses it to cross thousands of miles in one leap. The stylized cloud of the BYOC logo represents more than technology, it symbolizes Acer’s heritage and desire to do things differently.

Cloud technology is a revolutionary concept, yet the industry has only begun to realize its capabilities. With BYOC, Acer is accelerating progress by putting the power of the cloud in the hands of all people. Combined with Acer’s powerful and intuitive products, BYOC creates a new ecosystem of “hardware + software + services” to break down barriers between people and technology and to enable everyone to stay a touch more connected anytime, anywhere.

On May 29th, Acer will be opening its BYOC experience center in Taoyuan, Taiwan to showcase new BYOC solutions.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 15, 2014 — Dell today announced in Malaysia it is seizing a new market opportunity with the unveiling of a brand new series of full-featured, enterprise storage arrays designed for mid-sized fibre channel deployments. Available first in the Asia-Pacific region and planned globally later in 2014, the new Dell Storage SC4000 Series arrays demonstrate Dell’s continued innovation to bring full-featured, enterprise-class storage to cost-efficient, high-performing, smaller-scale solutions.

The new storage array series, with an all-flash solution that can cost up to 76 percent less than competing pure flash arrays1, is the latest addition to Dell’s customer-driven enterprise data center portfolio of purpose-built solutions designed to make IT more efficient and practical.

“The Dell Storage SC4000 Series represents the latest example of Dell redefining the economics of enterprise storage and a huge opportunity for our customers, channel partners and Dell,” said KT Ong, general manager, Consumer and Commercial Business, Dell Malaysia. “Dell now can offer enterprise-class, fibre-channel arrays in a high-performing, affordable solution designed for mid-sized deployments. These arrays offer the advanced capabilities of larger-scale enterprise storage to help medium-sized organizations become more competitive, while enabling Dell to address an entirely new storage market segment with our world class solutions and support.”

In 2014 and 2015, mid-tier, fibre channel-networked storage arrays and networked attached storage are expected to represent an estimated $5.5 billion market worldwide4, an opportunity previously untapped by full-featured Dell Storage technology. Additionally, the vast majority of the Asia-Pacific region’s mid-tier storage array sales this year are estimated to be fibre channel-networked (79 percent), compared to 39 percent in North America.4 With the new Dell Storage arrays launching first in Asia-Pacific countries, Dell can help support the storage needs of the region while also opening new doors for business growth.

New Dell Storage Arrays Bring Large-Scale, Enterprise-Class Features to Smaller Deployments
The new Dell Storage SC4000 Series arrays will debut with the Dell Storage SC4020, a 2U, 24-drive storage area network (SAN) based on Dell Compellent Storage Center software. The arrays are designed to offer the same advanced capabilities as larger SANs in a solution sized and priced for mid-sized deployments. Launching with fibre channel connectivity, the new arrays complement the Dell EqualLogic iSCSI-based solutions and enable Dell to offer full-featured arrays that address both networking demands for mid-sized storage needs.
The new Dell Storage SC4020, which can scale to 408 terabytes of raw capacity, supports a wide range of workloads for organizations across all industries and sizes seeking a high-performing, mid-sized SAN entry point or a remote or branch office storage solution. For example, the Dell Storage SC4020 can host up to 10,000 Microsoft Exchange 2013 user mailboxes in a single 2U SAN with 24 hard disk drives, and, with only 12 drives, the same 2U SAN can achieve up to 129,000 Oracle database workload IOPS (input-output operations per second) with less than one millisecond latency.3

The new arrays offer interoperability with proven Dell Compellent storage solutions and the same ability to intelligently tier data across traditional rotating drives, write-optimized flash (SLC), and read-optimized flash (MLC) drives. Users can achieve all-flash performance for the price of 15K disk technology2 by tiering between flash drive types, thereby reducing total storage costs and gaining from all-flash performance to support applications, such as OLTP database workloads, where previously all-flash storage could have been cost prohibitive.

The Dell Storage SC4020 provides an excellent replication partner for Dell Compellent SC8000 arrays, allowing customers to seamlessly connect and manage arrays together with a single, centralized management interface that can help simplify operations and reduce total cost of ownership. The Dell Storage SC4000 Series also offers customers:

  • Unprecedented value with a highly efficient SAN and compact size, making it ideal for mid-sized needs or remote/branch office deployments
  • Enterprise-class performance with dual controller capability and SAN optimized for all-flash or hybrid SSD/HDD configurations
  • Flexible networking with fibre channel connectivity and iSCSI support available for replication
  • Best-in-class intelligence with advanced levels of automation and control to auto-tune the customer’s storage environment
  • Advanced software capabilities such as automated tiering, replication, thin provisioning, snapshots and centralized management for multiple local and remote SANs
  • Perpetual software licensing that enables customers to pay only once for software features, even across hardware upgrades
  • Unified storage with the ability to manage both block and file storage, with the Dell Fluid File System, from a single management console
  • World class Dell Copilot support services that provide a combination of centralized support and 24x7 active system monitoring to help improve system performance and stability

Attack of the Clones: Fake AV Invading Mobile App Stores

Petaling Jaya, 15 May 2014. Fake antivirus programs are increasingly appearing in mobile app stores. Kaspersky Lab recently found two such programs imitating the company’s products in two different official app stores for mobile devices.

The first fake app was discovered in Windows Phone Store. This in itself was unusual because scammers tend to target users of Android – via Google Play – due to the platform’s popularity. The app in question went by the name of Kaspersky Mobile. The fact there is no such program in Kaspersky Lab’s product line suggests the fraudsters didn’t expect anyone to notice the discrepancy. Another interesting feature of this particular app was the fact users had to pay for it. This meant its creators immediately started making money without having to devise additional scams such as demanding payments to remove “malware” that had supposedly been detected on users’ computers.

The second fake app imitating the Kaspersky Lab brand was for sale on Google Play and was called Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2014. Again, there is no Kaspersky Lab product for mobile devices by that name. The screenshot used on the page of the fake app was simply copied from the official Kaspersky Internet Security for Android page. Unlike the app for sale in Windows Phone Store, the creators of this fake app didn’t even bother to add a simulation of a scanner – the functionality was limited to random series of statements appearing on top of an “official” logo.

“The story of paid fake AV for mobiles started with the appearance of Virus Shield in the Google Play store. Now we are seeing how one successful scam spawns numerous clones. Scammers who want to make a quick buck from inattentive users are selling dozens of fake apps, copying the design, but not the functionality of the original,” commented Roman Unuchek, Senior Malware Analyst at Kaspersky Lab. “It is quite possible that more and more of these fake apps will start appearing. One thing is for sure, the security mechanisms put in place by the official stores cannot cope with these kinds of scams.”

More about fake mobile antivirus programs and other fake apps can be found at Kaspersky Lab’s official analytical site.
