Brocade Names Gabriel Breeman as OEM Director for Asia-Pacific

Industry veteran rejoins Brocade to lead regional OEM strategies and strategic partnerships under the newly-created role

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia; April 22, 2014 –  Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD) today announced the appointment of Gabriel Breeman to the newly created position of OEM director for Asia Pacific (APAC). In this role, Breeman will drive OEM strategies, strategic partnerships and alliance initiatives for the region to help position Brocade as the data centre networking partner of choice in the OEM partner business segment. Breeman will be based in Singapore and report directly to Brocade vice president for Asia Pacific (APAC), Adam Judd.

Breeman was most recently the senior director for Global OEM at Fusion-io, where he was responsible for leading worldwide revenue growth strategies through OEM partners. Prior to Fusion-io, Breeman spent six years at Brocade as a Global Sales Executive and Corporate Account Director. He has also held direct end-user, indirect channel and OEM leadership roles at Dot Hill Systems and Sun Microsystems during his 20-year career in the Information Technology sector.

New Protection Storage Capabilities

With the introduction of a new EMC Data Domain Operating SystemTM, EMC continues to evolve Data Domain’s position as the industry’s de-facto open protection storage platform, with capabilities that extend its support far beyond just backup to establish it as a cornerstone for enabling delivery of data protection as-a-service.  New capabilities include:

·         VPLEX and RecoverPoint now combine to deliver MetroPoint™ topology, an industry-unique 3 site business continuity capability for mission critical applications.  MetroPoint topology combines VPLEX Metro™ continuous availability with RecoverPoint remote replication and continuous data protection (CDP) to efficiently deliver comprehensive operational and disaster recovery over any distance.

IBM Sets U.S. Patent Record; Achieves 21st Straight Year of Patent Leadership

IBM inventors received more than 6,800 U.S. patents in 2013 including 3 from Malaysia

PETALING JAYA 27 Jan 2014:  IBM (NYSE: IBM) inventors received a record-setting 6,809 patents for 2013, making it the 21st consecutive year the company topped the annual list of U.S. patent leaders. The 6,809 patents included three that were awarded to Malaysian teams whose inventions have helped our clients improve their business processes.

The three local patents were for the following inventions: automated paper consumption tracking and auditing;  message oriented construction of web services; and, spacer and process to enhance the strain in the channel with stress liner.

EMC Announces General Availability of XtremIO All-Flash Array

Unique Scale-Out Architecture Maximizes Flash Performance Without Compromising Efficiency Or Durability

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia — November 15, 2013. Today EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) announced general availability of EMC® XtremIO™, the industry’s first and only all-flash array to provide consistent and predictable extreme performance to any application workload over any period of time, regardless of whether the array is idle or busy, empty or full. To achieve this, EMC XtremIO features several unique flash innovations: a scale-out multi-controller architecture with linear scalability; deduplication that is always on, and always inline; data protection that is 6X more efficient and 4X faster than traditional RAID.

Under the covers, EMC XtremIO is architected differently than any other all-flash array. Four key technologies work in concert to maximize performance without compromising efficiency or durability:

XtremIO Data Protection (XDP)
Shared In-Memory Metadata

EMC expects XtremIO to be a leader in the all-flash array market, which IDC forecasts to grow to $1.2 billion in revenue by 2015*. The new array is already in high demand, with 10 Petabytes of effective deduplicated capacity already sold through EMC’s Directed Availability program (announced in March 2013).

XtremIO Technology Highlights

Customers are looking to all-flash arrays to support workloads that need predictable and consistent low-latency across datasets that frequently change – such as VDI, virtual servers, massively consolidated databases and test/development environments. With XtremIO, these workloads not only achieve better performance, but also improved $/IOPS and greater administrative simplicity. There are four key architectural differences that set XtremIO apart from other all-flash arrays:

Content-Based Data Placement keeps the array inherently balanced and optimized to within a fraction of a percent across all SSDs and array controllers and removes duplicate data inline in the data path.

Dual-Stage Metadata Engine allows the array to fully leverage the random access nature of flash and place data anywhere in the array without requiring system level back-end cleaning processes (also known as garbage collection). This enables XtremIO to avoid the up to a 50% performance hit in IOPS, up to 1000% increase in latency, and up to 10X reduction in flash endurance compared to other flash arrays that use system level garbage collection.

XtremIO Data Protection (XDP) is a flash-specific algorithm that guards against SSD failures while delivering up to 6X more usable capacity than traditional RAID. XDP allows end-users to utilize 100% of the capacity on XtremIO – while maintaining maximum levels of performance. Other all-flash arrays will begin to show degraded performance when they reach 60% to 80% of capacity. This means that XDP delivers up to 40% more usable capacity compared to other all-flash arrays. In addition, the efficient XDP algorithms deliver up to 4X better performance and flash endurance than RAID in long-term production data center conditions.

Shared In-Memory Metadata enables the array to deliver the widest range of performance, and to rapidly clone information already in the array to massively accelerate common tasks like deploying virtual machines. Virtual machine clones are created at up to 20X the network bandwidth between the host and the array, several times faster and with lower impact to production virtual machines than other all-flash arrays.

XtremIO is a scale-out array based on building blocks called X-Bricks. Each X-Brick is available with 10TB of capacity – with an additional option for 20TB of capacity expected to be available early next year. XtremIO arrays deliver up to one million fully random IOPS with over 250TB of effective capacity in a single XtremIO cluster with inline deduplication. A single XtremIO cluster scales from two to eight controllers and up to 128 cores, capable of handling any OLTP Database, virtual server and VDI workload – with all data services active.

In addition, XtremIO is integrated within the EMC ecosystem to provide additional capabilities, ease-of-use, and compatibility. A VCE Vblock™ Specialized System for Extreme Applications based on XtremIO all-flash arrays provides unparalleled VDI end-user computing performance at unprecedented cost per virtual desktop, which customers can begin ordering by the end of 2013.

XtremIO array management is also integrated with VMware vSphere and accelerated with VMware's VAAI storage APIs. In addition, XtremIO is supported with other EMC technologies including EMC VPLEX™, EMC PowerPath® and EMC Secure Remote Support (ESRS).

Brocade and EMC Work Together to Enable Software-Defined Storage for EMC Fibre Channel SAN Install Base

New EMC ViPR Software-Defined Storage Platform Now Shipping with Integrated Brocade SAN Management Technology; Enables Immediate Virtualization Functionality for 50,000 Joint EMC/Brocade SAN Customers 

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia —Oct. 2, 2013: Brocade (NASDAQ: BRCD), the leader in data center fabric networking solutions, today announced that the company’s storage area networking (SAN) management technology is now available for more than 50,000 joint EMC and Brocade customers to immediately realize the virtualization benefits of the EMC® ViPR™ Software-Defined Storage Platform within highly virtualized cloud environments.

Specifically, Brocade® Network Advisor SAN management software has been integrated with the EMC ViPR platform to create a modern storage architecture that enables policy-based automation for managing and provisioning both EMC and non-EMC storage infrastructure using the industry-standard Storage Management Initiative (SMI) interface. This integration will help reduce data center costs and complexity for both current and future application deployments by taking advantage of Brocade Gen 5 Fibre Channel SAN solutions enhanced with Brocade Fabric Vision™ technology. Brocade Network Advisor is sold by EMC as Connectrix® Manager Converged Network Edition (CMCNE).

As a result of the joint efforts, EMC SAN customers can now utilize the EMC ViPR platform to leverage existing storage infrastructures for traditional data center workloads, as well as provision new EMC ViPR Object Data Service and EMC ViPR HDFS Service through access to Amazon S3 and OpenStack Swift for next-generation workloads. This complete spectrum of capabilities can be run with enterprise storage, including the EMC VMAX®, VPLEX®, VNX®, Atmos® and Isilon® families, as well as commodity storage.

EMC Elevates Data Protection Strategy With Sweeping Array of New Products

New Data Domain Systems Deliver 4x Performance, 10x Scalability; Data Protection Suite Enhanced with Deeper Storage and Virtualization Integration; Mozy Makes Cloud Backup Easier to Scale and Manage

EMC Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced a broad array of new hardware and software products that enable customers to deploy new Protection  Storage Architectures that address today’s and tomorrow’s data protection challenges. The new products cut across the company’s market leading Data Domain, Avamar, NetWorker and Mozy product lines.

Backup administrators are facing increasing pressure to meet the needs of a diverse set of stakeholders that includes application owners, virtual machine administrators and storage and server administrators.  Many of these stakeholders wish to increase the control and visibility into the protection of the environments they manage and have implemented their own solutions.  The result is an “accidental architecture” that consists of a fragmented set of data protection processes and infrastructure silos, the ownership of which is often unclear.

With today’s announcement, EMC is delivering a full range of capabilities that enable backup teams to transform from the chaos of the accidental architecture to a more effective Protection Storage Architecture that meets the demands of the business.  The key tenets of EMC’s Protection Storage Architecture are:

Protection Storage: The anchor of the architectures is cost- and capacity-optimized storage with high data durability that can deliver disaster recovery, backup and archive.
Data Source Integration: Leverages both the optimized data flows and user interfaces of data sources including hypervisor, application and storage, to deliver the performance and visibility internal customers want.
Data Management Services:  A catalog of all data copies plus reporting and analytics for compliance.
Technology Highlights

New Midrange Data Domain Systems: The new Data Domain DD2500, DD4200, DD4500 and DD7200 systems deliver the performance and scalability to cost-effectively consolidate all backup and archive data onto a single, easy-to-manage protection storage platform. These new midrange systems are up to 4x faster and 10x more scalable than the existing Data Domain systems they replace.  In addition, the new systems support up to 540 data streams, a 3x increase that further enables complete consolidation of backup and/or archive data.  Designed to lower total cost of ownership for backup and archive storage, the new systems provide up to a 38% lower cost-per gigabyte.

Extended Backup and Archive Application Support: Empowering application owners is critical to delivering a Protection Storage Architecture.  Data Domain systems now support direct backup from SAP  HANA Studio via NFS – enabling SAP  HANA  DBAs to leverage efficient protection storage while maintaining control of backup processes.  In addition, DD BoostTM for Oracle RMAN now supports Oracle Exadata and SAP running on Oracle – enabling DBA control of faster, more efficient backup and disaster recovery. To support a broader range of archive storage environments, Data Domain systems now offer seamless integration with archiving applications from OpenText, IBM and Dell. With these new integrations, Data Domain systems can be deployed with over 20 products for file, email, SharePoint, content management and database archiving.

Data Protection Suite Enhancements: EMC Avamar® 7 now supports all major data center workloads being directed to Data Domain systems, with the addition of file system and NAS/NDMP backups. With this addition, all major data center workloads can now be protected by the combined solution. Avamar extends its leadership for virtual environments with new VM Instant Access, which allows a VM to be booted from a Data Domain system and up-and running in under 2 minutes. Also, a new VMware vSphere web client allows VMware administrators to manage Avamar backup and recovery directly from a familiar interface.


EMC NetWorker® 8.1 introduces new integrated snapshot management, featuring a new wizard-based user interface, auto-discovery, and intelligent assignment of snapshot storage. Integrations with Data Domain systems are tightened, with Data Domain Boost support over Fibre Channel.  This enables 50% faster backups and 2.5x faster restores compared to VTL-based configurations. Finally, NetWorker is delivering a complete refresh of its VMware support, leveraging Avamar technology services.

New Cloud Backup Functionality: Mozy by EMC makes it easier to scale cloud backup while reducing cost and complexity. New Active Directory integration reduces the administrative burden of separately creating user accounts and enhances self-service, which greatly reduces the TCO. Simplified storage management introduces new storage pools which means less time spent monitoring storage quotas at the individual machine level. Finally, keyless activation accelerates the process for provisioning new users, resulting in greater scalability.

Lotus F1 Team Turbocharges Quest for World Championship with EMC

EMC becomes ‘Official 2014 Development Partner’ of Lotus F1 Team; Unites with VCE to Provide Information Technology and Services to Help Address the Most Radical Rule Changes in the Recent History of Formula 1

Lotus F1 Team and EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) announced today that they have   partnered to create the information technology backbone necessary to underpin the Team’s aspirations for a World Championship in 2015.

To achieve this goal, Lotus F1 Team must optimize its resources to face the challenges presented by the new 2014 Formula 1 regulations; the most radical design changes since the introduction of the composite monocoque.

Beginning next year, Formula 1’s constructors will be required to switch from normally-aspirated V8 engines to a new breed of more efficient and more powerful hybrid, turbocharged V6 power units, as well as integrating new Energy Recovery System (ERS) technology. The changes will have a significant impact on the cars’ design and engineering, and on engine power, aerodynamics and fuel consumption in particular.

Lotus F1 Team determined that a complete overhaul of its IT infrastructure – both trackside and at its Enstone, UK, headquarters – would be necessary to meet this challenge, while also generating new sources of competitive advantage. The partnership with EMC is being implemented to spearhead the Team’s development program for its 2014 car and will see Lotus F1 Team adopt a range of Private Cloud technologies, enabling more agile and cost-efficient storage, management and protection of information.

The 2014 redesign represents the most significant change in recent Formula 1 racing history. In addition to car design changes, a complex network of more than 200 sensors can generate in excess of 25 megabytes of data per lap for each car.   In a sport where hundredths of a second mark the difference between a victor and the rest of the pack, the ability to collect, make readily available in a cloud-like manner and quickly analyze these massive amounts of Big Data has emerged as a key competitive differentiator.

Refreshed IT Infrastructure

Lotus F1 Team will deploy a VCE Vblock System – integrating best-in-class compute, network, and storage technologies from Cisco, EMC and VMware – at its Enstone data center to underpin the Team’s Computer-Aided Design (CAD) program and its Microsoft Dynamics Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) solution.

EMC will also deploy its EMC® Atmos® object-based cloud storage platform to store, archive and access Lotus F1 Team’s unstructured content at scale; EMC Data Domain® deduplication storage systems to  enable fast backup and recovery of the factory’s information estate; and its Cloud Tiering Appliance™ to ensure the secure and efficient tiering of the Team’s CAD files before they are moved to the cloud – key to reclaiming valuable primary storage space, lower operating costs and reducing backup requirements.
In order to facilitate secure CAD file-sharing and collaboration between the Team and its partners, Lotus F1 Team will also be using EMC’s Syncplicity® enterprise file sync and share solution and Documentum® Information Rights Management (IRM) technology which tracks and protects   documents, messages and attachments while in transit, at rest and after delivery. Brocade and EMC Deliver Software-Defined Storage for Fibre Channel SANs


Brocade SAN Management Technology Integrated into New EMC ViPR Software-Defined Storage to Enable Immediate Virtualization Functionality for 50,000 Joint EMC/Brocade SAN Customers

LAS VEGAS (EMC World)—May 7, 2013: Brocade (Nasdaq: BRCD), the leader in fabric networking solutions, today announced its Gen 5 Fibre Channel storage area network (SAN) solutions are integrated with the new EMC® ViPR™ Software-Defined Storage Platform. This approach helps eliminate data center cost and complexity by improving policy-based automation of EMC and non-EMC storage infrastructures, creating a modern storage architecture for future application deployments. This solution will allow more than 50,000 joint EMC and Brocade customers to immediately realize the virtualization benefits of the new EMC ViPR software-defined storage platform within highly virtualized cloud environments.

Teams from Brocade and EMC have completed the integration of Brocade® Network Advisor SAN management software into ViPR using the industry-standard Storage Management Initiative (SMI) interface. This integration enables customers with both third-party and EMC storage arrays—including the EMC VMAX®, VPLEX®, VNX®, Atmos®, and Isilon® families—to take advantage of Brocade Gen 5 Fibre Channel SAN solutions enhanced with Brocade Fabric Vision™ technology as they transform to a software-defined storage architecture with EMC ViPR. New Digital Universe Study Reveals Big Data Gap: Less Than 1% of World’s Data is Analyzed; Less Than 20% is Protected


Opportunities Abound for Companies Capable of Protecting and Extracting Value from an Expanding Universe of Data; By 2020, Emerging Markets Will Supplant the Developed World as the Main Producer of the World’s Data.

New IDC Digital Universe study, “Big Data, Bigger Digital Shadows, and Biggest Growth in the Far East”¹ (sponsored by EMC) finds that only a tiny fraction of the world’s Big Data potential is being realized, though the amount of useful data is expanding. 
IDC projects that the digital universe will reach 40 zettabytes (ZB) by 2020, an amount that exceeds previous forecasts by 5 ZBs, resulting in a 50-fold growth from the beginning of 2010.
This year’s study marks the first time IDC was able to capture where the information in the digital universe either originated or was first captured or consumed, revealing some dramatic shifts currently underway.
The amount of data that requires protection is growing faster than the digital universe itself, yet levels of protection are not keeping pace.
According to the study, 2.8 ZB of data will have been created and replicated in 2012.
Machine-generated data is a key driver in the growth of the world’s data – which is projected to increase 15x by 2020. 
By 2020, emerging markets will supplant the developed world as the main producer of the world’s data.
The investment in spending on IT hardware, software, services, telecommunications and staff that could be considered the “infrastructure” of the digital universe will grow by 40% between 2012 and 2020.  Investment in targeted areas like storage management, security, Big Data, and cloud computing will grow considerably faster.


EMC® Corporation (NYSE:EMC) today announced results of the EMC-sponsored IDC Digital Universe study, “Big Data, Bigger Digital Shadows, and Biggest Growth in the Far East”— which found that despite the unprecedented expansion of the digital universe due to the massive amounts of data being generated daily by people and machines, IDC estimates that only 0.5% of the world’s data is being analyzed.

The proliferation of devices such as PCs and smartphones worldwide, increased Internet access within emerging markets and the boost in data from machines such as surveillance cameras or smart meters has contributed to the doubling of the digital universe within the past two years alone -- to a mammoth 2.8 ZB. IDC projects that the digital universe will reach 40 ZB by 2020, an amount that exceeds previous forecasts by 14%.


In terms of sheer volume, 40 ZB of data is equivalent to:

There are 700,500,000,000,000,000,000 grains of sand on all the beaches on earth (or seven quintillion five quadrillion). That means 40 ZB is equal to 57 times the amount of all the grains of sand on all the beaches on earth.
If we could save all 40 ZB onto today’s Blue-ray discs, the weight of those discs (without any sleeves or cases) would be the same as 424 Nimitz-class aircraft carriers.
In 2020, 40 ZB will be 5,247 GB per person worldwide.

This year’s study marks the first time IDC was able to capture where the information in the digital universe either originated or was first captured or consumed, revealing some dramatic shifts currently underway.  Now in its sixth year, the study – measuring and forecasting the amount of digital information created and copied annually – includes findings around the “Big Data Gap,” which is the gap between the amount of data with hidden value and the amount of value that is actually being extracted; the level of data protection required versus what is being delivered; and the geographic implications of the world’s data.

Study Highlights:

Rapid expansion of the digital universe: IDC projects that the digital universe will reach 40 ZB by 2020, an amount that exceeds previous forecasts.
o The digital universe will double every two years between now and 2020.
o There will be approximately 5,247 GB of data for every man, woman and child on earth in 2020.
o A major factor behind the expansion of the digital universe is the growth of machine generated data, increasing from 11% of the digital universe in 2005 to over 40% in 2020.

Large quantities of useful data are getting lost: The promise of Big Data lies within the extraction of value from large, untapped pools of data. However, the majority of new data is largely untagged file-based and unstructured data, which means little is known about it.
o In 2012, 23% (643 exabytes) of the digital universe would be useful for Big Data if tagged and analyzed. However, currently only 3% of the potentially useful data is tagged, and even less is analyzed.
o The amount of useful data is expanding with the growth of the digital universe. By 2020, 33% of the digital universe (13,000+ exabytes) will have Big Data value if it is tagged and analyzed.

Much of the digital universe is unprotected: The amount of data that requires protection is growing faster than the digital universe itself.
o Less than a third of the digital universe required data protection in 2010, but that proportion is expected to exceed 40% by 2020.
o In 2012, while about 35% of the information in the digital universe required some type of data protection, less than 20% of the digital universe actually has these protections.
o The level of protection varies by region, with much less protection in the emerging markets.
o Challenges such as advanced threats, the security skills gap and lack of adherence to security best practices among consumers and corporations will continue to compound the issue.

A geographic role-reversal is around the corner: Although the digital universe was a developed-world phenomenon in the early days, that is about to change as the population of the emerging markets begins to cast a longer shadow.
o While emerging markets accounted for 23% of the digital universe as recently as 2010, their share is already up to 36% in 2012.
o By 2020, IDC predicts that 62% of the digital universe will be attributable to emerging markets.
o The current global breakdown of the digital universe is: U.S. – 32%, Western Europe – 19%, China – 13%, India – 4%, rest of the world – 32%.
o By 2020, China alone is expected to generate 22% of the world’s data.

Other Key Findings:

As cloud computing plays an even more important role in the management of Big Data, the number of servers worldwide is expected to grow tenfold and the amount of information managed directly by enterprise data centers will grow by a factor of 14.
The type of data stored in the cloud will also experience a radical transformation over the next few years. By 2020, IDC predicts that 46.7% of data stored in the cloud will be related to entertainment – not enterprise data. Surveillance data, embedded and medical data, and information created by computers, phones and consumer electronics will make up the remainder.
The amount of information stored in the digital universe about individual users exceeds the amount of data that they themselves create.
Western Europe is currently investing the most to manage the digital universe, spending $2.49 USD per GB. The U.S. comes in second, investing $1.77 per GB, followed by China at $1.31 per GB and India at $0.87 per GB.
As the infrastructure of the digital universe becomes ever more connected, information won’t reside within the region where it is consumed, nor will it need to. By 2020, IDC estimates that nearly 40% of data will be “touched” by cloud computing (private and public), meaning that somewhere between a byte’s origination and consumption, it will be stored or processed in a cloud.

At the end of the project on November 20, the anonymized data will be made available to educators, historians, anthropologists, scientists and the public, providing a snapshot of two months in the life of humanity.

These and other stories are being told through “The Human Face of Big Data,” the latest groundbreaking, globally crowdsourced initiative from Rick Smolan, the creator of the “Day in the Life” series. The project, made possible through primary sponsorship from EMC® (NYSE:EMC), is based on the premise that the real-time visualization of data col-lected by satellites, and by billions of sensors, RFID tags, and GPS-enabled cameras and smartphones around the world, is enabling humanity to sense, measure, understand and affect aspects of our existence in ways our ancestors could never have imagined in their wildest dreams.

A Visual Record of Big Data in Action

In March 2012, Rick Smolan and Jennifer Erwitt dispatched more than 100 photogra-phers, editors and writers in every corner of the globe to explore the world of Big Data and to determine if it truly does, as many in the field claim, represent a never before seen toolset for humanity, helping us address the biggest challenges facing our species.

Smartphone App

From September 25 through October 2, people around the world will be invited to “measure our world” via The Human Face of Big Data app (free and available on iOS and Android in five languages). The app will engage people in a series of activities using the sensors in their phones, as well as enable them to compare their responses to thought-provoking questions with others around the globe. Participants will be able to map their daily path, share objects and rituals that bring them luck, get a glimpse into the one spe-cial thing that others want to experience during their lifetime and discover hidden secrets about their world. Participants will also be able to find their “data doppelganger.”

The “Mission Control” Experience

On October 2, representatives of media organizations will be invited to Mission Control events in New York City, London and Singapore, where data collected from participants will be analyzed, visualized and interpreted. Experts and innovators in the Big Data arena will share examples of their work in an interactive “Big Data Lab.” A live webcast will allow people around the world to watch the events as the day unfolds.

On November 8, students around the world in grades 6–12 and their teachers will engage in a series of data-collection activities to measure, analyze and map their worlds through the Data Detectives initiative. LENOVO AND EMC TEAM UP IN STRATEGIC WORLDWIDE PARTNERSHIP

A solid step in Lenovo’s aspiration to be a player in industry standard servers and networked storage with EMC’s leading technology

EMC further strengthens ability to serve customers’ storage solutions needs in China and other emerging markets

Companies agree to form SMB-focused storage joint venture

BEIJING, China – August 1, 2012 – Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) and EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced a broad partnership that enhances Lenovo’s position in industry standard servers and networked storage solutions, while significantly expanding EMC’s reach in China and other key, high-growth markets. The new partnership is expected to spark innovation and additional R&D in the server and storage markets by maximizing the product development talents and resources at both companies, while driving scale and efficiency in the partners' respective supply chains.

The partnership is a strong strategic fit, leveraging the two leading companies’ respective strengths, across three main areas:

• First, Lenovo and EMC have formed a server technology development program that will accelerate and extend Lenovo’s capabilities in the x86 industry-standard server segment. These servers will be brought to market by Lenovo and embedded into selected EMC storage systems over time.

• Second, the companies have forged an OEM and reseller relationship in which Lenovo will provide EMC’s industry-leading networked storage solutions to its customers, initially in China and expanding into other global markets in step with the ongoing development of its server business.

• Finally, EMC and Lenovo plan to bring certain assets and resources from EMC’s Iomega business into a new joint venture which will provide Network Attached Storage (NAS) systems to small/medium businesses (SMB) and distributed enterprise sites.

During and after the transition from independent operations to the joint venture, customers will experience continuity of service, product delivery and warranty fulfillment. The joint venture is subject to customary closing procedures including regulatory approvals and is expected to close by the end of 2012.

The partnership described here is not considered material to either company’s current fiscal year earnings.

87% of Businesses in Malaysia Might Not be Able to Recover Lost Data and Systems

New independent research sponsored by EMC points to outdated backup and recovery infrastructure

Malaysia – June 21th, 2012. EMC Corporation (NYSE: EMC) today announced results of ‘The Disaster Recovery Survey 2012: Asia Pacific and Japan’, which found that 87% of companies in Malaysia are not very confident that they can fully recover systems or data in the event of a disaster, and that 69% of Malaysian organizations lost data or suffered systems downtime in the last 12 months. These findings highlight the need for backup transformation from antiquated technologies that are not suited for today’s data growth or availability expectations. A move to next-generation backup and recovery solutions ensure continued business operations in the event of a natural disaster, malicious activity or more routine and common disruptions to IT systems. In fact, the research has shown that the causes of systems downtime are often the commonplace disruptions to IT, such as hardware failure or data corruption, rather than natural disasters or other major incidents.

Commissioned by EMC and conducted by independent research company Vanson Bourne ‘The Disaster Recovery Survey 2012: Asia Pacific and Japan’ looks at the state of backup and disaster recovery in the region to understand how well companies are prepared for data loss and systems downtime.

Survey Findings:

Disruption happens: downtime and data loss more likely from an IT problem than a natural disaster

The research showed that it is not the extraordinary that creates problems, and it can take just a little to cause a lot of disruption, even something as simple as data corruption. The three most common causes of data loss and downtime in Malaysia are:
1. Hardware failure: 51%
2. Data corruption: 51%
3. Loss of power: 50%

This compares to just 13% of respondents citing natural disasters as a cause of systems downtime or data loss, and 16% of respondents attributing systems downtime or data loss to employee sabotage. Regardless of the cause, 61% of Malaysian organizations reviewed and changed their procedures for backup and recovery in response to an incident.

Furthermore, 51% of businesses increased their spending on backup and recovery after a disaster. This is against a backdrop where 36% of organizations surveyed did not feel they were spending enough on backup and recovery. On average, the research found that businesses across Malaysia are spending 9.54% of their IT budgets on backup and recovery.

Economic impacts: Lost revenue attributed to systems downtime
The study identified that there are measureable business impacts from systems downtime, with the top three cited by Malaysian organizations as:
1. Loss of employee productivity: 40%
2. Loss of revenue: 37%
3. Delay in product/service development: 39%

Systems failure resulted on average in two lost working days for the Malaysian businesses in the survey. Based on an average eight hour working day, this is the equivalent of 32,000 man-hours for a Malaysian company employing approximately 2,000 employees. Additionally, each organization lost an average of 1099GB of data during a 12 month period. Given that 1MB of data is approximately the equivalent of 25 email documents in size, losing 1099GB of data would be the equivalent of losing 27.48.1 million emails.

Despite loss of revenue being rated as a major consequence of systems downtime, the research also revealed that many Malaysian companies are not doing enough to protect essential customer data. 64% of organizations do not have a disaster recovery plan for their CRM systems, while only 5% of organizations who do have a disaster recovery plan for their applications would require their CRM applications to be up and running first following systems downtime.

Furthermore, businesses in Malaysia are failing to take advantage of insurance premium benefits that a comprehensive disaster recovery plan can engender. 62% of companies in Malaysia are obliged by either insurance policies or regulatory requirements to have a disaster recovery plan in place. More importantly, however, 40% of Malaysian organizations surveyed are offered reduced premiums by their insurance provider according to the strength of their IT systems backup/disaster recovery strategy. However, 36% of Malaysian organizations do not know if their insurance provider offers such reduced premiums – or they had never considered it at all – highlighting a missed opportunity for many businesses.

Outdated solutions: 43% still depend on tape and 35% still use CD Rom for backup and recovery, but this looks set to change
For backup and disaster recovery purposes, 43% of Malaysian organizations still rely on tape. Looking at the operational cost associated with tape, organizations in the Asia Pacific and Japan region spend on average more than USD58,821 (RM185,484) including transportation, storage, test and replacement of tape for the purposes of offsite disaster recovery. Meanwhile, 35% of companies rely on outdated CD-ROM for backup storage. Surprisingly, 14% of Malaysian organizations have an employee take a copy of their backup home with them for safekeeping.
However, 61% of businesses in Malaysia are already using modern disk-based backup and recovery solutions. This trend looks set to increase, with 80% of tape-using organizations looking to move beyond tape. The top three reasons cited for this planned move are:
1. Faster backups: 40%
2. Speed of data recovery and system restores: 38%
3. Durability (disk-based methods have a longer lifespan): 31% ; and Total cost of ownership: 31%
Preparedness for routine disruption or more significant incidents starts with a next-generation backup approach that leverages disk with data deduplication and network based replication technologies. The survey shows the reaction after disruption is to spend more on backup and recovery, but the damage is done in terms of time and money during a downtime as well as longer term damage to customer loyalty. By raising the visibility of the most common problems facing companies today and the associated economic consequences, organizations can proactively review their own strategies for backup and recovery to ensure they can meet business requirements.
