Cyberjaya: 5 December, 2012 --- Malaysians may not have to wait much longer to enjoy higher mobile broadband speeds. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced the allocation of the much anticipated 2600 MHz spectrum band, paving the way for Malaysians to enjoy 4G services which could offer mobile broadband speeds in excess of 100 Mbps.
The technology promises many news services to consumers such as high definition video streaming, enhanced user experience on real-time applications and better connectivity for mobile and consumer electronic devices.
Since the introduction of 3G and WiMAX technology in Malaysia, the demand for better quality mobile broadband service has intensified. This allocation is in line with similar initiatives in developed countries like the US and some European states. Market readiness for 4G technology is also reaching its maturity as increasingly, many of the latest devices in the global market support the use of this technology; hence the economies of scale will bring much benefit to the country.
Eight (8) companies will be allowed access to the 2600 MHz spectrum band. They are, in alphabetical order, Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone Marketing Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.
MCMC Chairman Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said, “MCMC is always committed to finding the right balance between the needs of consumers, investors and other stakeholders of the industry. We believe that the balance struck between ensuring healthy competition in the market and promoting industry development will help spur continued growth for existing service providers and provide opportunity for new market entrants.”
Existing service providers may use the 2600 MHz allocation to further expand and enhance the capacity of their mobile broadband networks to meet increasing consumer demands whilst the introduction of a new player is expected to bring fresh ideas and innovation to the market.
Service providers are also expected to enter into smart partnerships and sharing agreements between them which include spectrum and radio access network sharing in order to utilise larger bandwidths, lower the cost of roll out and offer better 4G-experience and affordability to consumers. Additionally, smart partnerships mean shared infrastructure thus reducing the duplication of physical transmission towers. 4G wholesale MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Service) will also be offered to other service providers that do not get access to the allocation.

2.6 GHz Spectrum Allocated to P1

U MOBILE AWARDED LTE SPECTRUM
Kuala Lumpur, 6th December, 2012 - U Mobile Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s most dynamic and innovative telco service provider, is pleased to be awarded a 20MHz block of the 2.6GHz spectrum by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

The allocation of the 2.6GHz spectrum blocks by MCMC to eight telecommunications players signifies the next phase of the evolution of mobile internet in Malaysia, as it provides the gateway for 4G or Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology.
Through its LTE services, U Mobile will aim to provide an even better value proposition to its customers with improved technology delivering mobile internet with speeds up to 100 Mbps, better smartphones and applications.

GREEN PACKET ON THE TURNAROUND WITH PROMISING Q1‘09 RESULTS

The Green Packet Group of Companies (The Group) today announced quarter one 2009 results that firmly reflect The Group’s projections of recovery in its revenue and business by year end.
The Group’s revenue has seen a dramatic increase of 85.7%, from RM22.3 mil to RM41.5 mil in Q1 2009 compared to the same corresponding period 2008. In addition to the surge in revenue, The Group also sees a substantial reduction in operational and investment related losses of 26.0%.
Speaking about the results and company performance, Mr. CC Puan, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Green Packet Berhad said, “The Group’s performance in Q1 2009 is as per our projections putting us on track to be EBITDA positive by end 2009. The performance witnessed in Q1 is a direct result of The Group’s now proven business plan, consumer demand, winning of new contracts, subscriber base increase and also the sound management of CAPEX, OPEX and investments.”
In Q1 ’09, The Group’s Solutions pillar secured contracts with Hong Kong’s leading telecommunications provider PCCW and Taiwan’s first-mover WiMAX service provider Tatung InfoComm to provide a host of solutions and services ranging across the GSM and WiMAX spaces. Green Packet also announced a partnership with GCT Semiconductor, Inc., to develop and launch the world’s first WiFi-WiMAX seamless roaming solution on a single chipset. Green Packet’s innovation received global industry recognition in the form of the TMC Distinction Award for two of their WiMAX devices.
The Malaysian WiMAX services provider arm of Green Packet, Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd or “P1” was also recently recognised with the 2008 Red Herring Asia’s Top 100 Most Innovative Private Technology Company award. P1 is reaping the harvest of its first-mover game plan and aggressive commercial deployment with an impressive 269% growth in subscriber base from Q4 ’08 to Q1 ’09 with net subscriber additions of 25,500 for Q1. The subscriber base is on target at 35,000 as at 31 March 2009.
“P1 successfully reached its targets in terms of subscriber base and network coverage in Q1 this year. Now, as the Company rolls out phase 2 which targets to reach 35% national coverage by end 2009, the subscriber base will continue to grow exponentially in line with network coverage. This translates to a significant and growing recurring monthly revenue stream for the Group. This increase also shows that the WiMAX proposition itself is sound and that there is strong consumer demand for our products and services,” said CC Puan.
The Group’s business model and current financial standing sees operating and investment funds available to implement P1’s deployment plan and activities, however, The Group’s forward planning may see them conduct fund raising activities to raise capital for future growth and expansion opportunities.
The Group announced a renounceable ‘Rights Issue’ of up to 208,320,775 new ordinary shares together with up to 208,320,775 free detachable new warrants on the basis of one Rights Share and one Warrant for every two existing ordinary shares held (1-for-2-issuance). Price per unit for the rights issue is yet to be confirmed.
Commenting on the Rights Issue, CC Puan said, “On the back of a sound Q1 performance which is on track, on plan and on target, The Group has decided that the time is right for us to build our war chest to seize market opportunities when they arise, and as a forward planning company to prepare for further growth and expansion on our now proven business.
According to CC Puan, the Rights Issue will allow existing shareholders to increase their shareholdings at the current low market level.
“The Group has maintained relatively low gearing of 0.48x, has sufficient cash available of RM199 mil and financing facilities of RM35 mil to cover CAPEX requirements of RM230 mil for Phase 1 and 2 implementation in this two years to meet 40% population coverage, Along with a proven business model and increasing consumer demand, our current share price is trading below the Group’s Net Assets per share,” CC Puan concluded.

Over 35 international operators and media representatives convene in Johor Bahru, Malaysia to witness one of the world’s first mobile WiMAX demonstrations on a commercial WiMAX network

(“P1”) – Malaysia’s first and leading WiMAX telco today successfully showcased one of the world’s first mobile WiMAX demonstrations on a commercial WiMAX network to over 35 international operators and media representatives in conjunction with the WiMAX Forum Congress Asia 2009.

P1 Leads Malaysia’s WiMAX Rollout with ZTE
P1’s multi-vendor strategy will accelerate growth of Malaysia’s largest WiMAX network in response to strong demands. Consumers can expect more new coverage area announcements soon
Kuala Lumpur – Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“P1”) – Malaysia’s first and leading WiMAX telco today formalized a deal with ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) to complete P1’s phase two national WiMAX network rollout plan in efforts to meet strong demand.
“Our goal is simple – to make broadband a right for all Malaysians. To deliver this commitment, the rapid and quality deployment of the P1 W1MAX network is crucial. P1’s appointment of ZTE is another step in crystallising our commitment by accelerating the deployment of P1 W1MAX networks in more areas to meet the overwhelming consumer demand for high-quality, high-performance wireless broadband”, explained Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer, P1 at the signing ceremony between P1 and ZTE held at Kuala Lumpur.

As part of the deal, ZTE will deploy P1’s phase two national network rollout plan including WiMAX network planning and design, equipment supply, engineering services and WiMAX network optimisation which is expected to be completed by end 2010.
P1’s planned phase two WiMAX network deployment will comprise of over 450 new sites in strategic market centres nationwide. For 2009, P1 aims to have 700 new sites up by year end.
P1 is expected to spend RM1 billion in CAPEX to support its aggressive network and product rollout over the next five years. From a consumer perspective, P1 looks to providing more regular updates on new P1 W1MAX coverage areas.

P1 W1MAX, Key Component in Wireless@Penang Initiative
Pulau Pinang, 25 September 2008 – Wireless Internet surfing via WiMAX will be a reality in Penang as early as December 2008, as part of the state government’s move to ensure that the island state becomes an “i-Land” by 2010. Today’s announcement is also part of Packet One (P1)’s expansion of its WiMAX broadband service nationwide.
The Penang State Government and P1 today entered into a partnership for P1 to supply the infrastructure for WiMAX@Penang under the Wireless@Penang initiative to bring the state’s infrastructure offerings to a higher level.
Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Lim Guan Eng said, “We are all responsible for continuously driving the state of Penang forward. We need to take the next natural course of action in order to further improve the standard of living of the people here. The wide availability of WiMAX in Penang will certainly provide a welcome boost to the existing and future industries.”
“With this project, Penang will be the one of the first few WiMAX states in the world. And for Malaysia, we are taking another step closer towards making Malaysia a WiMAX hub in the region,” CEO of P1, Michael Lai informed.
The first phase of WiMAX@Penang project will commence in October 2008, with the deployment of P1 base stations to cover areas around George Town, Penang Island, and Seberang Prai. The targeted areas are based on the highest population density and commercial viability.
The partnership with the Penang State Government is slated to expedite the Phase 1 rollout of WiMAX@Penang to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2009.
“With this partnership announcement, P1 is keeping to its promise of delivering wireless broadband via WiMAX to Malaysians. As the first WiMAX telco in Malaysia and one of the first in the world, we hope to contribute positively to the economic development of Penang as the Silicon Valley of Malaysia,” Lai informed.

“The Penang state government’s decision to introduce WiMAX@Penang with P1 is laudable because it will definitely help bring about enhanced social and economic benefits in the long term,” said Ryaz Patel, country manager, sales and marketing, Intel Malaysia. The company had announced in May 2008 an investment of RM50 million in Green Packet and a collaboration with the latter’s subsidiary P1 to deploy a commercial WiMAX network in Malaysia, added Patel.
P1 is the first Malaysian WiMAX converged telco to commercially offer WiMAX services, branded as P1 W1MAX on a large scale. The service is currently available in the Klang Valley.

P1, the First in Malaysia to Offer WiMAX Subscription Now
Kuala Lumpur – 19 August 2008 - Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (P1), the first Malaysian WiMAX converged telco and subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad, today officially opened its doors for Malaysians to subscribe to its WiMAX services, branded as P1 W1MAX.
Yang Berhormat Dato’ Shaziman Abu Mansor, Minister of Energy, Water and Communications was there to officiate the historic accomplishment at the grand launch of P1 W1MAX services.
P1’s CEO Michael Lai said, “We are indeed proud of the fact that we have put Malaysia on the world map of WiMAX. Today, not only is P1 the first WiMAX operator in Malaysia to open for subscriptions, but we are also one of the first in the world to offer WiMAX service commercially. Lai also thanked the Malaysian Government for having the foresight on the potential of WiMAX as a catalyst for the nation’s development, and being one of the first countries in the world to issue the WiMAX license as early as March 2007.

P1’s deployment is supported by Intel, which recently invested RM50 million (approx. US$15m) in P1’s parent company, Green Packet Berhad.

GCT and Green Packet Demonstrate World’s First Seamless WiMAX-WiFi Connection Manager
Singapore, June 19, 2008: GCT Semiconductor, a leading supplier of mobile WiMAX solutions to the global market, and Green Packet Berhad (Green Packet), a leading developer of next generation mobile broadband and networking solutions, today announced collaboration to bring the world’s first intelligent connection management solution that delivers seamless connectivity and handover between WiMAX and WiFi. The Green Packet “Intouch Connectivity Manager” integrates Green Packet’s Mobile IP solution with GCT’s GDM7215, the industry’s first single-chip solution supporting both mobile WiMAX IEEE 802.16e Wave 2 and WiFi 802.11 b/g.

With EMC’s CLARiiON CX3 and the NS40G NAS gateway, P1 is able to fully and seamlessly use both, using the FC connectivity for high-performance applications when needed – like billing and VoIP, and iSCSI to handle large volumes of multimedia content.

INTEL CAPITAL MAKES RM50M INVESTMENT IN MALAYSIA’S GREEN PACKET TO ADVANCE WIMAX

Today’s announcement is a significant milestone for Malaysia and for WiMAX; it represents the first large-scale commercial deployment of mobile WiMAX in Southeast Asia, and the first large-scale deployment of an 802.16e 2.3GHz WiMAX network outside Korea. WiMAX delivers broadband speeds for accessing data applications such as movies and multi-media content on a variety of devices, including Intel-based notebooks.

Kuala Lumpur, 14 May 2008 – Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (P1), a subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad and WiMAX license-holder, has selected Oracle® Billing and Revenue Management. The move completes yet another important building block in the progress towards P1’s commercial launch of WiMAX services in Malaysia by June 2008 and longer-term goal of becoming Malaysia’s No.1 converged telecommunications service provider.
Oracle® Communications Billing and Revenue Management is a unified platform that enables service providers to improve time to market of new services, build stronger brands and lower operational costs.
The P1 implementation is being done by Accenture, a Certified Advantage Partner of the Oracle PartnerNetwork, who will continue to help Packet One Networks manage the effective day-to-day operations of the new system. The system is one of several key building blocks employed by P1 to ensure an unparalleled customer experience.

As the first out of the four Malaysian WiMAX 2.3Ghz license-holders to deliver on its commitment to deploy WiMAX to enrich the lives of Malaysians and bridge the digital divide, P1 is leading the pack by becoming the first to commercially deploy mobile WiMAX in the 2.3GHz band in Malaysia, and to establish one of the world’s largest mobile WiMAX 2.3Ghz networks.
Deployment is already underway in Klang Valley, Penang and Johor, and will expand rapidly throughout West Malaysia in phases. P1 plans to provide WiMAX coverage for 25 percent of the population in Malaysia (6.5 million people) by the end of 2008 and 40 percent of the population in Malaysia (10 million people) by the end of 2010. P1 expects to provide WiMAX coverage to 60 percent of the nation’s population, including urban, suburban and rural areas -- within five years.
