MIMOS launches first Internet of Things Technical Working Group Workshop towards developing National IoT Blueprint
Kuala Lumpur, May 14: MIMOS today launched the first national Internet of Things Technical Working Group (IoT TWG) Workshop to kick start the development of the National IoT Blueprint, which will play a key role in shaping Malaysia’s ICT landscape and take advantage of the numerous opportunities offered by IoT technologies.
The two-day Workshop, which brings together the cream of the cream from the technology community, academia and government agencies nationwide, will share knowledge and discuss ideas on means to best address the importance and impact the IoT will have on the country’s economic and social progress and explore collaboration in IoT research, development and commercialisation.
Launched under the patronage of the Science Advisor to the Prime Minister, Professor Emeritus Dato’ Sri Dr Zakri Abdul Hamid, the opening of the workshop was also attended by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation’s Deputy Secretary General (Science), Dr Zulkifli Mohamed Hashim.
“The IoT will inspire new working practices and business processes, spark a new wave of innovation, allow us to penetrate new markets and industries and encourage greater investments in technology,” said Dr Zulkifli. “With the right direction and policies, the National IoT Blueprint will bring about tremendous economic benefits to the country.”
The Internet of Things encompasses the integration of enabling technologies – devices, embedded software, connectivity/communications and information services, among others. It is expected to transform daily life via the application of smart appliances, homes, offices, vehicles, streets and cities.
Dr Zakri said the Blueprint would realise the Science to Action (S2A) initiative launched last year by Prime Minister Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak. The initiative aims to intensify the application of science and technology for industrial development and the wellbeing of Malaysians through three key components: Science to Industry, Science to Wellbeing and Science to Governance.
“The Internet of Things will also act as Science to Action enablers,” he said. “In Science to Industry, for example, it will realise opportunities in the digital age which in turn can lead to a Gross National Income of RM1.7 billion and the creation of 14,720 new jobs by 2020.”
Dr Zakri said the Blueprint would also complement national transformative initiatives as Digital Malaysia, the Government Transformation Programme and the Economic Transformation Programme.
“The Internet of Things will change the digital market and create greater economic value for all organisations and for Malaysia’s economy” he said, adding that the Blueprint would be presented to the government in October.
MIMOS President and Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Abdul Wahab Abdullah said the Internet of Things was a logical progression for the national R&D centre in ICT after having ‘introduced’ the Internet to Malaysia in 1992.
“MIMOS has been undertaking applied research in ICT towards raising national competitiveness and to position Malaysia as an innovation-led economy since our inception in 1985,” he said. “It is therefore fitting that we spearhead the IoT initiative with the support from the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation.”
Agencies and companies taking part in the Workshop include the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), National Heart Institute, Cisco Systems, Celcom Axiata Berhad, Intel, Oracle Corporation and Microsoft.

CELCOM AND DIGI SEAL COLLABORATIVE DEAL WITH TM FOR TM NEXT-GEN BACKHAUL™ SERVICES
Key industry players set to work together to provide extensive robust backhaul network infrastructure for broadband rollout in Peninsular Malaysia …
Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM) together with two (2) key mobile operators Celcom Axiata Berhad (Celcom), through its wholly-owned subsidiary, Celcom Networks Sdn Bhd (Celcom Networks) and DiGi Telecommunications Sdn. Bhd. (DiGi) today marked another major milestone in the nation’s telecommunications industry when the three (3) operators inked a wholesale bandwidth collaborative deal for TM Next-Gen Backhaul™ Services.
Witnessed by YB. Dato’ Jailani Johari, Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia, the principle terms of the landmark collaborative deal was documented in two (2) binding documents signed by Chief Executive Officers of TM, Celcom and DiGi; Tan Sri Zamzamzairani Mohd Isa, Group Chief Executive Officer, TM, Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer, Celcom and Henrik Clausen, Chief Executive Officer, DiGi respectively. Also present at the event was Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Mohamed Tarmizi, Chairman, Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
To keep pace with the on going demands and needs of the industry, Malaysian Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) are challenged to deliver significant improvement in their network quality to offer low latency and high bandwidth to mobile devices. In order to achieve this, MNOs need to gain access to more backhaul networks providing higher degrees of flexibility and better scalability. This industry collaboration also serves as a positive move; enabling a higher quality customer experience when they access high-bandwidth digital content, or run real-time applications on their mobile devices.
In this groundbreaking collaborative deal, TM will provide wholesale bandwidth connectivity via TM Next-Gen Backhaul™ services for aggregation and access sites jointly owned by Celcom (via Celcom Networks) and DiGi, covering a span of between 3,000 and 3,500 kilometres in Peninsular Malaysia. This forms an important part of the ongoing network collaboration initiative between Celcom and DiGi announced in early 2011, particularly with regards to the joint ambition to roll out more than 10,000 kilometres of fibre network nationwide.
TM will support Celcom and DiGi’s transmission requirements, whilst enabling both companies to optimise cost and efficiently utilise its infrastructure. In line with regulatory requirements for service providers to have a robust backhaul network for LTE rollout, this collaboration will help to avoid unnecessary duplication of network infrastructures and it is a strategic move by the operators to be more operationally efficient as the industry matures.
Commenting on the collaboration, Tan Sri Zamzamzairaini said, “We are indeed very happy with this signing with Celcom and DiGi, two (2) major players in the industry, in what is yet another landmark collaboration. As Malaysia’s leading telecommunications infrastructure provider, TM will optimise its extensive nationwide network infrastructure coverage to provide cost effective and high capacity bandwidth via resilient IP network platform for TM Next-Gen Backhaul™ Services deployment. This will support the continuous and ever-growing needs for higher mobile bandwidth demand of both Celcom and DiGi’s customers. Backhaul networks need to be able to support the main traffic types – voice, video, network signalling/management and internet data. Leveraging on TM’s strength on its nationwide fibre coverage and resilient network platform, Celcom and DiGi subscribers will be able to enjoy seamless and quality services via their mobile devices everywhere, anywhere.”
“The long term collaboration, spanning more than ten (10) years, between the three (3) parties will see two (2) phases of development. The first phase will be over a three (3) year period starting from 2014 until 2016 followed by the second phase deployment of additional sites for mobile access and aggregator sites across Peninsular Malaysia. This partnership re-iterates TM’s commitment in providing an open access for all MCMC-licensed service providers, allowing these operators to provide and deliver high quality services to their end users hence further strengthening our position as a neutral service provider”, added Tan Sri Zamzamzairani.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Henrik Clausen, DiGi’s Chief Executive Officer said; “Demand for quality internet services is growing year-by-year in Malaysia, and Malaysians all over the country today require access to always-on, high-speed data connectivity to cater to their increasing needs. By leasing wholesale bandwidth services for access and aggregation fibre network from TM, DiGi will be able to obtain quick access to fibre infrastructure to support our future network capacity demands, to deliver affordable and high-quality internet connectivity to more Malaysians.”
“Infrastructure sharing among industry players is gaining traction around the world. Our collaborative effort today marks another clear move to be more operationally efficient as an industry, and by leveraging on synergies created we will be able to build and utilise our assets more efficiently, optimise costs, and avoid duplicating network infrastructures. Ultimately, benefits derived from operational efficiencies will be channeled towards accelerating our reach and significantly improving the quality of our services to all customers across Malaysia.”
Further commenting on the collaboration, Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer, Celcom mentioned, “This collaboration is a significant milestone for Celcom – not only as a showcase of industry collaborations in line with national aspirations but also as a major step towards top-notch customer experience. We are committed to improving our nationwide network for coverage and speeds in the long run and this represents one of many key investments into network quality that Celcom is currently implementing.”
This collaboration between key Malaysian telco industry players is in line with the Government’s call for greater industry partnerships and at the same time promoting healthy competition among the players as service providers will be focusing on delivering improved customer experience and better value offerings, which ultimately will benefit Malaysian consumers.

IBM Watson At Your Service: New Watson Breakthrough Transforms How Brands Engage Today's Connected Consumers
Top Brands, including Celcom Axiata Berhad, Tap Watson's Ability to Crunch Big Data and Provide Fast, Personalized Responses for Empowered Consumers
PETALING JAYA, 22 MAY 2013 --- IBM today unveiled the IBM Watson Engagement Advisor, a technology breakthrough that allows brands to crunch big data in record time to transform the way they engage clients in key functions such as customer service, marketing and sales.
Now businesses can better serve consumers with a cognitive computing assistant that learns, adapts and understands a company's data quickly and easily, enabling users to have IBM Watson at work quickly, while increasing its knowledge and value over time.
Leading brands from a variety of industries including ANZ, Celcom, IHS, Nielsen and Royal Bank of Canada are exploring how the IBM Watson Engagement Advisor can help them engage with their customers.
"In line with our vision of being the premier mobile operator in Malaysia, Celcom is proud to be a part of the IBM Watson Customer Early Engagement Program," said Dato’ Sri Shazalli Ramly, Chief Executive Officer of Celcom Axiata Berhad, Malaysia’s first and foremost mobile operator and the only telco globally that has achieved 27 quarters of consecutive revenue growth. "Our participation aims to help us harness the power of Watson in analyzing raw data to provide deeper customer insights and preferences in near real time. This will facilitate the delivery of targeted customer offerings, simplify end-user interactions and provide richer customer experiences across our products, services and touch points," he said.
The IBM Watson Engagement Advisor is a first of a kind system designed to help customer-facing personnel assist consumers with deeper insights more quickly than previously possible. Delivered through cloud-delivered services and online chat sessions, IBM Watson will empower a brand's customer service agents to provide fast, data-driven answers, or sit directly in the hands of consumers via mobile device. In one simple click, the solution's "Ask Watson" feature will quickly help address customers' questions, offer feedback to guide their purchase decisions, and troubleshoot their problems.
"We envision Watson to serve as cognitive assistant, adept and quick at making sense of Big Data, that can empower our regional bank advisors to better serve our two million wealth management clients across the region," said Joyce Phillips, CEO Global Wealth and Group Managing Director, Marketing, Innovation and Digital, ANZ Banking Group. "We are pleased to explore with IBM how Watson can enable smarter, faster financial recommendations – yielding a customer experience that is simple, personalized and steeped in data-informed insights."
“Around the globe and across platforms, Nielsen provides insights into what consumers watch and buy—helping marketers engage with their customers in the smartest possible way," said Randall Beard, Global Head, Advertiser Solutions for Nielsen. "Our work with IBM’s Watson is the latest from the Nielsen Innovation Lab, founded to advance research in advertising effectiveness. Watson's unique capacity to uncover insights from Big Data by simply posing a question in natural language is incredibly powerful. Using Watson, we will explore the ways we can help agencies and their client brands more effectively engage with consumers across devices and improve the impact of their advertising and media plans.”
Part of IBM's Smarter Commerce initiative, the newest capabilities of IBM Watson are a natural fit for customer engagement, based on its ability to understand the nuances of human language, process questions akin to the way people think, and quickly cull through vast amounts of big data for relevant, evidence-based responses to its human users' needs.
The rise of the digital consumer has spawned a range of online, mobile and social media commerce trends that require businesses to deepen their interactions with customers and transform the way they provide marketing, sales and service. Consumers expect brands to know them individually, deliver personalized interactions and self service options. Business leaders -- such as chief marketing officers, customer experience leaders and heads of sales -- must transform the way they interact with consumers to build brand loyalty and improve customer service. The key to success: IBM Watson, via cognitive computing intellect, can proactively engage with a business' customers, and continuously learn from interactions, anytime and anywhere, providing fast, more accurate and personalized interactions.
The IBM Watson Engagement Advisor will help companies make their interactions count by knowing, delivering and learning what each customer wants – in the context of their preferences and actions – sometimes before even the customer knows it themselves. Consider these findings:
· Millennial consumers will comprise nearly half of the workforce by 2020 -- using paychecks for major purchases that require top-flight customer service -- from cars to insurance policies.
· There will be more than 10 billion mobile devices by 2016, outpacing the human population.
· An IBM study of 1,700 chief marketing officers (CMOs) reveals that 65 percent of CMOs feel under prepared for the growth of choices that today's empowered consumers have for communications channels, such as smart phones and tablets.
These disruptive forces are empowering consumers and raising their expectations of the entire customer experience. This power shift from the seller to the buyer is redefining the term "commerce." Retailers were the first to face the rising power of consumers, but now companies across a wide array of industries such as telecommunications, financial services and others have begun adapting to these changes.
With the latest IBM Watson debut, IBM is enabling clients to better respond to market shifts in real-time, automate marketing, and transform the way they service their clients, while improving their global brand presence.
"IBM is taking Watson to the masses in ways that positively impact people's lives, from helping doctors improve patient care to helping businesses put consumers first, in an increasingly mobile world," said Manoj Saxena, General Manager, IBM Watson Solutions. "Customer engagement is a natural fit for Watson, which can instantly create a strong bond between who customers are as individuals, and what types of information will help them reach their goals. The end product: users will come away feeling known as people, empowered as consumers, and engaged as satisfied brand ambassadors who are willing to champion the business to friends and family."
This is IBM Watson; How Can I Help You?
For the first time, consumers will be able to tap into the power of IBM Watson for their everyday needs. The IBM Watson Engagement Advisor "Ask Watson" feature greets, and offers help to, customers via any channel, be it through a website chat window or a mobile push alert, saving consumers the hassle of performing searches, combing through websites and forums, or waiting endlessly for a response about the information they need. Calling upon IBM's Big Data Analytics technologies, IBM Watson retrieves data about customers to help ensure interactions are tailored to their needs, and search its corpus of stored information for the best solutions.
Since its television debut, IBM Watson is smarter, faster and smaller -- having gained a 240 percent improvement in system performance, and a reduction in physical requirements by 75 percent. The cognitive computing system can now be run on a single Power 750 server using Linux, transitioning from its original size of a master bedroom to that of four pizza boxes. Businesses that use IBM Watson can have the solution up and running quickly using a cloud computing environment, or deploy the technology on-premise.
IBM Watson transforms the customer service experience
The state of today's customer engagement leaves much room for improvement. 270 billion customer service calls are handled annually, with roughly 50 percent unresolved, which for businesses means an increase in cost per escalated call by three times. In hindsight, 61 percent of those calls could have been resolved with better access to information. It is no surprise that Forrester’s 2012 Customer Experience Index revealed only 37 percent of brands received good or excellent customer experience index scores, while 64 percent received a rating of “OK,” “poor” or “very poor” from their customers.
Making matters more urgent for brands is the imminent spike in Millennial consumers who are expanding their footprint in today's economy, using paychecks for insurance, bank accounts and telecom plans. Their expectations for brands: fast and personalized service on the go, via mobile device.
The IBM Watson Engagement Advisor will also help brands manage their existing customer engagement functions, by reducing burdens faced by call and e-service centers that struggle to keep up with skyrocketing demand.
The move of IBM Watson into customer engagement positions it within IBM's Smarter Commerce initiative, which provides a range of solutions and services to better connect more than 2,000 brands to their increasingly digital customers, accelerating business to the speed of life through intelligent automation.

LTE is here! Gear Up for Higher Speeds in 2013! MCMC Issues Spectrum for 4G Mobile Broadband in the 2600 MHz Band
Cyberjaya: 5 December, 2012 --- Malaysians may not have to wait much longer to enjoy higher mobile broadband speeds. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced the allocation of the much anticipated 2600 MHz spectrum band, paving the way for Malaysians to enjoy 4G services which could offer mobile broadband speeds in excess of 100 Mbps.
The technology promises many news services to consumers such as high definition video streaming, enhanced user experience on real-time applications and better connectivity for mobile and consumer electronic devices.
Since the introduction of 3G and WiMAX technology in Malaysia, the demand for better quality mobile broadband service has intensified. This allocation is in line with similar initiatives in developed countries like the US and some European states. Market readiness for 4G technology is also reaching its maturity as increasingly, many of the latest devices in the global market support the use of this technology; hence the economies of scale will bring much benefit to the country.
Eight (8) companies will be allowed access to the 2600 MHz spectrum band. They are, in alphabetical order, Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone Marketing Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.
MCMC Chairman Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said, “MCMC is always committed to finding the right balance between the needs of consumers, investors and other stakeholders of the industry. We believe that the balance struck between ensuring healthy competition in the market and promoting industry development will help spur continued growth for existing service providers and provide opportunity for new market entrants.”
Existing service providers may use the 2600 MHz allocation to further expand and enhance the capacity of their mobile broadband networks to meet increasing consumer demands whilst the introduction of a new player is expected to bring fresh ideas and innovation to the market.
Service providers are also expected to enter into smart partnerships and sharing agreements between them which include spectrum and radio access network sharing in order to utilise larger bandwidths, lower the cost of roll out and offer better 4G-experience and affordability to consumers. Additionally, smart partnerships mean shared infrastructure thus reducing the duplication of physical transmission towers. 4G wholesale MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Service) will also be offered to other service providers that do not get access to the allocation.
“With this new technology, the people can look forward to improvements in their digital lifestyle. For the business community, cloud services, teleworking, teleconferencing and video type applications can be better experienced whilst on the move,” said Dato’ Mohamed Sharil.
2.6 GHz Spectrum Allocated to P1
Kuala Lumpur, 6th December 2012 – South East Asia’s leading and one of the world’s first 4G service provider, Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”) has been allocated the access to 2.6 GHz spectrum by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Michael Lai, CEO of P1 said, “We are thrilled to have been granted access to 20MHz of 2.6 GHz TD spectrum, and we thank the government, our Ministry and MCMC for their confidence in P1. Being one of the pioneers in the 4G world, we are definitely excited to be able to offer this next generation of 4G technology to Malaysians.”
“Being one of the Steering Committee Members of the Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI), we are excited to be able to serve our subscribers with the 4G Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE) technology. Our subscribers will be among the first to taste and experience the latest 4G LTE technology. Continuing our mission of “Broadband for All”, this spectrum allocation will allow us to continue our commitment in bringing cutting-edge broadband technology to every single Malaysian. And simultaneously, contribute to our national broadband agenda and initiative,” he elaborated.
“We are ready for this, and we look forward to serving our customers even better with complete range of services from 4G wireless, Fiber, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) services and wireless internet leased line,” Lai added.
U MOBILE AWARDED LTE SPECTRUM
Kuala Lumpur, 6th December, 2012 - U Mobile Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s most dynamic and innovative telco service provider, is pleased to be awarded a 20MHz block of the 2.6GHz spectrum by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
In a letter issued by MCMC yesterday, it was outlined that U Mobile was awarded a spectrum block which the company notes as strategic.
“The position of our block of spectrum is strategic in that it provides U Mobile with the option of sharing spectrum and possibly collaborating through smart partnerships with other telcos,” said Jaffa Sany Ariffin, U Mobile CEO. “By sharing spectrum we would hope to benefit from reduced rollout costs and pass those savings onto our consumers.”
Jaffa added, “When LTE services are commercially available, the benefit will be an enriching and exciting mobile experience for our customers and it will undoubtedly bring significant change to the way we experience mobile communication services. We thank the MCMC for awarding us the spectrum and we look forward to providing our customers with even faster mobile internet services.”
The allocation of the 2.6GHz spectrum blocks by MCMC to eight telecommunications players signifies the next phase of the evolution of mobile internet in Malaysia, as it provides the gateway for 4G or Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology.
Through its LTE services, U Mobile will aim to provide an even better value proposition to its customers with improved technology delivering mobile internet with speeds up to 100 Mbps, better smartphones and applications.
As a result of the spectrum allocation, U Mobile is well placed to play its role in assisting the Government in achieving its national agenda to provide high speed mobile data services for all Malaysians.

TM Forum’s Customer Experience Management Summit Helps Service Providers Put Customers at the Heart of the Business
Experts from Celcom Axiata Berhad, Dialog Axiata, Globe Telecom, Oracle, Tune Talk and more deliver strategies to exceed customer expectations, enable vibrant, open ecosystem
SINGAPORE/MALAYSIA - November 26, 2012: Today, Asia is widely considered one of the major growth markets for the communications industry and as a result, service providers are saturating the region with their offerings. While many are focused on capturing new subscribers’ attention, they need to shift their mindset beyond customer attraction and transform their relationships through strategic customer experience management (CEM) programs in order to maintain those customers and increase long-term revenue. To help service providers understand the key facets of CEM, TM Forum, a global, non-profit industry association with over 130 members across Asia, opens the doors tomorrow to its Customer Experience Management Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where 30 speakers will address attendees from across Asia.
TM Forum’s Customer Experience Management Summit, which runs from Nov. 27-28 at the Prince Hotel, features a stellar line-up of CEM expert keynotes from Celcom Axiata Berhad; Dialog Axiata PLC; Globe Telecom, Inc.; Oracle Corp.; and Tune Talk Sdn Bhd. These speakers will explore how in today’s experience-driven market, a seamless and sustainable customer experience is vital and goes beyond network coverage and adequate customer service to include customer loyalty programs, social media interaction and more
.
TM Forum chose Kuala Lumpur as the location for the Customer Experience Management Summit not only because of Asia’s reputation as a growth market, but also because of its strong technology, Banking, Financial Services and Insurance (BFSI) and retail sectors. Indeed, TM Forum’s Summit addresses how all types of businesses can put the customer at the heart of their strategy by understanding their expectations and behaviors.
Jason Lo, CEO of Tune Talk, Malaysia’s fastest growing Mobile Virtual Network Operator, and one of the Customer Experience Management Summit keynote speakers, stresses the importance of CEM in the region. “The proliferation of smartphones and the surge of mobile broadband in Asia have created opportunities for over-the-top players to aggressively compete with mobile operators for consumer loyalty,” he says. “In order to remain relevant, service providers need to reevaluate their CEM strategies to focus on the full picture—including customer service, network performance, using big data to understand customer preferences, and targeting customers with services based on their usage patterns. Strategic CEM is crucial to success in Asia, where customer loyalty could be a real game changer.”
Aileen Smith, chief operating officer, TM Forum, agrees that the focus on CEM is an absolute necessity in the current competitive environment. “Subscribers are attracted to differentiating factors that sets one service provider apart from the rest. Historically, if the relationship with the provider is good, customers stay with that provider,” she says. “But today, proactive retention of customers, loyalty programs and mobile broadband performance for increased social media interaction, video and web browsing are all key elements in establishing a successful CEM strategy. Our Customer Experience Management Summit serves as a platform for all the players in the ecosystem to discuss challenges in customer management and develop strategies to move forward.”
According to Smith, CEM is one of the key elements for success in the new digital economy, and this summit is an important part of how TM Forum is working to provide guidance, best practices and practical tools that help businesses effectively deliver enterprise-grade digital services in complex environments. As a result, on Dec. 4, TM Forum will launch Frameworx 12.5, the latest update to its suite of best practices and standards, which includes important CEM tools such as a Customer Experience Maturity Model and Customer Experience Management Index. These tools ultimately help service providers build stronger CEM programs and measure their CEM efforts overall.
