P1 CEO Awarded ICT Personality of the Year in 2012 PIKOM Leadership Awards

Kuala Lumpur, (9 Nov 2012) – CEO of South-East Asia’s 4G broadband pioneer Packet One Networks Sdn. Bhd. (P1), Michael Lai was recently named the ICT Personality of the Year at the 2012 PIKOM Leadership Awards.

The PIKOM Leadership Awards is an annual event that recognises achievements of individuals in the ICT industry with the following categories – ICT Personality of the Year, ICT Organisation of the Year, Member Excellence Awards, and CIO Excellence Awards. Individuals conferred for this award has to demonstrate exemplary growth and performance in the ICT industry. They must also have a history of serving the industry and show prominent contribution to the ICT industry in the country.

Michael has been contributing to the ICT industry in Malaysia for the last 20 years. Among some of his key milestones include major involvement during the golden days of Internet. In addition, he was among the pioneers leading the launch of 3G services and later pushed the adoption of fixed broadband in Malaysia. In 2008, Lai led P1 and launched the first 4G provider in Malaysia and South East Asia. With his in-depth knowledge in the industry, Michael is also the first Malaysian to be appointed as the WiMAX Forum Board Member and a Member of the 4G Global TD-LTE Initiative Steering Committee, representing the South East Asia region.

P1 to Champion 4G TD-LTE in South-East Asia

Kuala Lumpur,  6 September 2012 – South-East Asia’s 4G leading provider Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”) has been appointed to the Global TD-LTE* Initiative (“GTI”) Steering Committee which is the decision-making board for the 4G TD-LTE technology global movement.

GTI was founded by leading international mobile network operators in February 2011 to meet the demands for growing mobile broadband and explore new opportunities across industry and public segments. The five founding members of GTI are China Mobile, Clearwire in the US, Bharti Airtel from India, Vodafone headquartered in the UK and Softbank in Japan. These countries combined make up more than half of the world’s population.

Craig Ehrlich, Chairman of the GTI Steering Committee said with P1’s appointment to the GTI Steering Committee, GTI aims to further bring together the leading operators to steer the TD-LTE ecosystem as a major standard in mobile broadband technology and drive early development of next generation mobile broadband networks.

MALAYSIA TO HAVE SEA’S FIRST 4G EXPERIENCE CENTRE AND TEST LAB

HONG KONG, 15 November 2011 – The cutting-edge 4G technology is getting a timely boost with the setting up of a Southeast Asia’s first 4G LTE TDD* Technology Experience Centre and Test Lab in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. This breakthrough is the result of the collaboration between Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”), P1’s consulting arm Packet One International Pte Ltd (“P1i”), and ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”). It also gains support from China Mobile Communications Co. Ltd Research Institute (“China Mobile”).

The 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab will be established in early 2012 at P1’s headquarters known as Packet Hub. Operators and vendors who want a taste of blazing wireless speeds of 120 Mbps and beyond are welcome to utilize the facility.

Malaysia is the choice location for the set-up because P1 is based in Kuala Lumpur and has, for over the last three years, been operating one of the largest 4G WiMAX networks in the world. P1 is very advanced in its preparations to progress from 4G WiMAX to a dual 4G WiMAX/LTE TDD network.

Lai said, “For any technology mass adoption, the eco-system must be in place. In this case, the DNA or Device, Network and Application have to evolve in tandem and coherently. The 4G Experience Centre and Test Lab is a clear and steady roadmap to encourage over 530 WiMAX operators in 150 countries towards a smooth and natural migration to LTE TDD technology. After all, WiMAX and LTE TDD are from the same Internet-Protocol family of technology. This will be achieved through sharing our experience and advice on multi-mode deployment, interworking with 2G, 3G and WiFi, WiMAX, LTE TDD/FDD network planning and optimization in the 2.3 GHz and 2.6 GHz bands.”

The Centre will initially utilize P1’s 2.6GHz spectrum for LTE TDD technology showcase and interoperability testing of the latest 4G devices. By the first half 2012, the network will also utilize P1’s 2.3GHz spectrum.

GREEN PACKET ON THE TURNAROUND WITH PROMISING Q1‘09 RESULTS

Kuala Lumpur, - Friday, May 22, 2009:
The Green Packet Group of Companies (The Group) today announced quarter one 2009 results that firmly reflect The Group’s projections of recovery in its revenue and business by year end.

The Group’s revenue has seen a dramatic increase of 85.7%, from RM22.3 mil to RM41.5 mil in Q1 2009 compared to the same corresponding period 2008. In addition to the surge in revenue, The Group also sees a substantial reduction in operational and investment related losses of 26.0%.

Speaking about the results and company performance, Mr. CC Puan, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Green Packet Berhad said, “The Group’s performance in Q1 2009 is as per our projections putting us on track to be EBITDA positive by end 2009. The performance witnessed in Q1 is a direct result of The Group’s now proven business plan, consumer demand, winning of new contracts, subscriber base increase and also the sound management of CAPEX, OPEX and investments.”

In Q1 ’09, The Group’s Solutions pillar secured contracts with Hong Kong’s leading telecommunications provider PCCW and Taiwan’s first-mover WiMAX service provider Tatung InfoComm to provide a host of solutions and services ranging across the GSM and WiMAX spaces. Green Packet also announced a partnership with GCT Semiconductor, Inc., to develop and launch the world’s first WiFi-WiMAX seamless roaming solution on a single chipset. Green Packet’s innovation received global industry recognition in the form of the TMC Distinction Award for two of their WiMAX devices.

The Malaysian WiMAX services provider arm of Green Packet, Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd or “P1” was also recently recognised with the 2008 Red Herring Asia’s Top 100 Most Innovative Private Technology Company award. P1 is reaping the harvest of its first-mover game plan and aggressive commercial deployment with an impressive 269% growth in subscriber base from Q4 ’08 to Q1 ’09 with net subscriber additions of 25,500 for Q1. The subscriber base is on target at 35,000 as at 31 March 2009.

“P1 successfully reached its targets in terms of subscriber base and network coverage in Q1 this year. Now, as the Company rolls out phase 2 which targets to reach 35% national coverage by end 2009, the subscriber base will continue to grow exponentially in line with network coverage. This translates to a significant and growing recurring monthly revenue stream for the Group. This increase also shows that the WiMAX proposition itself is sound and that there is strong consumer demand for our products and services,” said CC Puan.

The Group’s business model and current financial standing sees operating and investment funds available to implement P1’s deployment plan and activities, however, The Group’s forward planning may see them conduct fund raising activities to raise capital for future growth and expansion opportunities.

The Group announced a renounceable ‘Rights Issue’ of up to 208,320,775 new ordinary shares together with up to 208,320,775 free detachable new warrants on the basis of one Rights Share and one Warrant for every two existing ordinary shares held (1-for-2-issuance). Price per unit for the rights issue is yet to be confirmed.

Commenting on the Rights Issue, CC Puan said, “On the back of a sound Q1 performance which is on track, on plan and on target, The Group has decided that the time is right for us to build our war chest to seize market opportunities when they arise, and as a forward planning company to prepare for further growth and expansion on our now proven business.

According to CC Puan, the Rights Issue will allow existing shareholders to increase their shareholdings at the current low market level.

“The Group has maintained relatively low gearing of 0.48x, has sufficient cash available of RM199 mil and financing facilities of RM35 mil to cover CAPEX requirements of RM230 mil for Phase 1 and 2 implementation in this two years to meet 40% population coverage, Along with a proven business model and increasing consumer demand, our current share price is trading below the Group’s Net Assets per share,” CC Puan concluded.

(“P1”) – Malaysia’s first and leading WiMAX telco today successfully showcased one of the world’s first mobile WiMAX demonstrations on a commercial WiMAX network to over 35 international operators and media representatives in conjunction with the WiMAX Forum Congress Asia 2009.

“The success of today’s showcase to a global audience underlines P1’s leadership position in the world’s WiMAX deployment. The demonstration of mobile WiMAX on a commercial WiMAX network marks the beginning of a shift in the ecosystem of mobile wireless products and services,” said Michael Lai, Chief Executive Officer, P1.

The demonstration, jointly organised by P1, P1’s parent company Green Packet and network solutions providers Alcatel-Lucent, provides a glimpse of what is to come from P1. P1 Leads Malaysia’s WiMAX Rollout with ZTE

P1’s multi-vendor strategy will accelerate growth of Malaysia’s largest WiMAX network in response to strong demands. Consumers can expect more new coverage area announcements soon

Kuala Lumpur – Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (“P1”) – Malaysia’s first and leading WiMAX telco today formalized a deal with ZTE Corporation (“ZTE”) to complete P1’s phase two national WiMAX network rollout plan in efforts to meet strong demand.

“Our goal is simple – to make broadband a right for all Malaysians. To deliver this commitment, the rapid and quality deployment of the P1 W1MAX network is crucial. P1’s planned phase two WiMAX network deployment will comprise of over 450 new sites in strategic market centres nationwide. For 2009, P1 aims to have 700 new sites up by year end.

P1 is expected to spend RM1 billion in CAPEX to support its aggressive network and product rollout over the next five years. From a consumer perspective, P1 looks to providing more regular updates on new P1 W1MAX coverage areas.

The two-day event in Rio de Janeiro has generated for the Company more than 20 potential tie-ups and business opportunities with a number of operators and key players from nine countries.

According to the latest study released by WiMAX Forum®, Latin America alone is projected to contribute to 10 percent of global WiMAX subscribers by 2012 with an absolute number of 13 million users. P1 W1MAX, Key Component in Wireless@Penang Initiative

Pulau Pinang, 25 September 2008 – Wireless Internet surfing via WiMAX will be a reality in Penang as early as December 2008, as part of the state government’s move to ensure that the island state becomes an “i-Land” by 2010. Today’s announcement is also part of Packet One (P1)’s expansion of its WiMAX broadband service nationwide.

The Penang State Government and P1 today entered into a partnership for P1 to supply the infrastructure for WiMAX@Penang under the Wireless@Penang initiative to bring the state’s infrastructure offerings to a higher level.

Chief Minister of Penang, YAB Lim Guan Eng said, “We are all responsible for continuously driving the state of Penang forward. We need to take the next natural course of action in order to further improve the standard of living of the people here. The wide availability of WiMAX in Penang will certainly provide a welcome boost to the existing and future industries.”

“With this project, Penang will be the one of the first few WiMAX states in the world. And for Malaysia, we are taking another step closer towards making Malaysia a WiMAX hub in the region,” CEO of P1, Michael Lai informed.

The first phase of WiMAX@Penang project will commence in October 2008, with the deployment of P1 base stations to cover areas around George Town, Penang Island, and Seberang Prai. The targeted areas are based on the highest population density and commercial viability.

The partnership with the Penang State Government is slated to expedite the Phase 1 rollout of WiMAX@Penang to be completed by the end of the first quarter of 2009.

Everything we do at P1 is evaluated through the question ‘Does this improve the way people currently live, learn and play in Malaysia’.

The tie-up with the telecommunications service provider, Fiberail, will enable P1 to accelerate its network deployment by utilizing Fiberail’s highly reliable, nationwide, fiber optic network, for its WiMAX backhaul. The agreement with Fiberail will provide greater flexibility in provisioning of scalable bandwidth for P1’s WiMAX rollout in-line with market demands. A fiber optic backhaul does not suffer from environmental interference problems, it offers large bandwith capacity and better SLAs as it does not require Line of Sight (LOS) to the access point, hence ensuring a superior WiMAX experience for the end users.

While the partnership with Fiberail contributes towards better and faster connectivity, the partnership with AIMS Asia and local telcos enhance P1’s ability to provide a better voice and data interconnect with all local and key international telecommunication providers. This will be realized through the Access Agreements signed with all local telcos and hosting of P1’s Internet upstream switch at AIMS’s datacenter.

Under this agreement, P1 will lease Internet upstream bandwidth from AIMS for international traffic and port connection to Malaysian Internet Exchange (MyIX) for local Internet traffic, he added.

Registered with MCMC, the Access Agreements with local telcos namely TM &TMNet, Maxis, Celcom, Digi and TimeDotCom; will enable P1’s Voice service users to dial numbers of other networks, allowing its subscribers to call across networks seamlessly.

Kuala Lumpur – 2 June 2008 – Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd. (P1), Malaysia’s first WiMAX licensee to deploy WiMAX services and subsidiary of Green Packet Berhad, announced today that they have selected an information infrastructure solution from EMC Corporation comprising EMC® CLARiiON® CX3-40C high-performance storage system and EMC Celerra® NS40G dedicated IP storage gateway. The new information infrastructure solution will ensure that P1’s customer service capabilities meet and exceed customer expectations.

In the past, business were faced with making a difficult choice between the high-performance of Fibre Channel (FC) and the affordability and ease-of-use of iSCSI which required a separate system which increased costs and management complexity. With EMC’s CLARiiON CX3 and the NS40G NAS gateway, P1 is able to fully and seamlessly use both, using the FC connectivity for high-performance applications when needed – like billing and VoIP, and iSCSI to handle large volumes of multimedia content.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia, May 19, 2008 – Intel Capital today announced that it has invested RM50M in Green Packet Berhad (Green Packet), a provider of next-generation network solutions and services. Intel and Green Packet’s subsidiary, Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (Packet One), also today announced that they will work together to deploy Malaysia’s first nation-wide 802.16e WiMAX network, targeted to be commercially available from June 2008.

Today’s announcement is a significant milestone for Malaysia and for WiMAX; it represents the first large-scale commercial deployment of mobile WiMAX in Southeast Asia, and the first large-scale deployment of an 802.16e 2.3GHz WiMAX network outside Korea. WiMAX delivers broadband speeds for accessing data applications such as movies and multi-media content on a variety of devices, including Intel-based notebooks.
