Broadband Plan Comparison in Malaysia
Broadband plan internet users in Malaysia are continuously growing. According to a report called Measuring the Information Society 2013 commissioned by the United Nations International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Malaysia had the highest rate of “digital natives” among fellow developing nations across the globe. Digital natives is a term used to describe those who are the most technologically savvy; accept technology ahead of their peers, and those who use their smart phones frequently.
With the growing number of students and professionals accessing internet connection in their day-to-day lives, it is no wonder that various broadband and cellular service providers have become competitive in offering the best broadband plans to its users.
Below are some of the cheap broadband plans offered by various Malaysian service providers categorized into fiber broadband and wireless broadband plans:
Fiber Broadband Plans
Fibre is a type of broadband internet connection which uses fibre optic cables to send signal through pulses of light. The speed of this broadband plan is usually not influenced with the distance, and as light travels fast, it usually provides a quicker connection than more traditional connections such as the ADSL. Here are some fiber broadband plan service providers in Malaysia:
Maxis’ Fibre broadband plans are divided into three speed categories. Their 10 Mbps package costs RM148 per month. For faster internet connection, Maxis offer a 20 Mbps package for RM198 per month. Finally, if you want a super-fast connection which allows you to watch streaming videos without buffering, you can get their 30 Mbps fibre package for RM248 per month. Maxis’ fibre broadband internet plan comes with free calls worth RM30 to all mobile, fixed numbers and IDD destinations, along with unlimited downloads for your internet use.
On the other hand, P1 Fiber broadband plan costs RM169 to RM269 per month with a download and upload quota of 50GB to 200GB. P1’s contract is valid for 24 months.
UniFi offers three packages as well under their Video, Internet and Phone (VIP) Services. VIP 20 offers 20 Mbps as the name suggests and costs RM249 per month. VIP 20 can allow up to 120 GB of monthly download and uploads, comes with a free modem, free wireless router, phone and set-top-box that feature 18 free TV channels. VIP 10, on the other hand, provides 10 Mbps and is priced at RM199 per month. Its maximum monthly download is 90GB. Lastly, VIP 5 provides 5 Mbps for a monthly fee of RM149. It has a maximum download capacity of 60 GB. Users may also save RM2 by choosing the autopay option, which charges RM147 per month.
Wireless Broadband Plans
Wireless may be used for home or on-the-go. For home use, a WiFi router is needed while on-the-go users need to connect a broadband USB stick or dongle to their computers to be able to use wireless internet out of their homes. For mobile internet users, a 3G mobile phone network or mobile phone network is needed to get internet connection. Here are a few wireless broadband plan service providers in Malaysia:
Celcom provides different plans for iPad, PC & Notebook, and Smartphone use. Celcom’s iPad and PC& Notebook plans are both priced at RM48 to RM138 per month at the speed 1.5 to 7.5 Mbps. The bandwidth cap is from 1.5GB to 10GB per month. Meanwhile, their Smartphone plan costs RM68 to RM88 per month with a bandwidth cap of 3 to 5GB per month. The speed is also estimated at 1.5 to 7.5 Mbps. According to Celcom, speed of all three plans can increase by up to 10x with 4G LTE compatible devices.
Maxis’ home wireless broadband plans are divided into five categories according to volume of use. All plans come with a RM150 activation fee. Light users are charged RM49 per month for a 3GB bandwidth cap (1.5 + 1.5). This package comes with 100 free minutes plus a free 7.2 home WiFi modem and a free DECT phone worth RM80. A casual surfer on the other hand, will be charged RM69 per month for an 8GB (4 + 4) bandwidth cap. Casual surfers also get the same freebies as light users of 100 free minutes plus a free 7.2 home WiFi modem and a free DECT phone worth RM80. Both light users and casual surfers are also entitled to a rebate of RM10 per month for the first 12 months of use. For a higher bandwidth cap, there’s the regular streamer package, which offers a RM99 monthly fee for a 20GB (5 + 15) bandwidth cap. Freebies include 200 free minutes, a free 21 Mbps modem and a free DECT phone. The heavy downloader plan costs RM139 a month for a 28GB bandwidth cap (7 + 21). This comes with free 200 minutes plus the free 21 Mbps modem and the DECT phone. Finally, the power user plan costs RM169 per month for a 48GB (12+36) bandwidth cap. This package comes with the same benefits offered to heavy and regular users: the 300 free minutes plus the free 21 Mbps modem and a free DECT phone. Regular, heavy and power users are all entitled to a rebate of RM10 per month for the first 5 months.
P1 offers four wireless broadband plans: OnePlan, ForHome, ToGo Prepaid, and ToGo Postpaid. OnePlan is for on-the-go and home users and costs RM109 to RM169 per month for an 8GB bandwidth cap at 1-4 Mbps speed. The contract runs for 12 to 24 months. ForHome is for home users and costs RM79 to RM139 per month for a 8GB to 35GB bandwidth cap with a speed of 1-4 Mbps. Contract is for 12 to 24 months. ToGo Prepaid is for those who ants to pay-as-they-use. A starter kit is worth RM199, and it comes with a 4GB bandwidth cap valid for 30 days, with a speed of up to 800 Kbps. For reloads, the RM20 plan offers a quota of 500MB, with a download speed of up to 800 Kbps and valid for 15 days. RM50 plan offers a quota of 2GB, with a similar download speed of up to 800 Kbps, valid for 30 days. Finally ToGo Postpaid is for those who prefer to be charged monthly. The cost is RM39 to RM99 per month for a 3GB to 15GB bandwidth cap and a speed of 1 Mbps to 10 Mbps. Contract for this plan rund from 6 to 24 months.
Other wireless broadband service providers include U Mobile Broadband and YES Broadband.
With all the many options available to Malaysian internet surfers, you will surely find the best internet connection deal. All you need to do is research a lot, outline your actual needs versus your wants, and factor in your budget to decide.

YTL Communications and Red Hat Transform the Way Students are Educated in Malaysia with E-Learning
Red Hat enables YTL Communications to deliver flexible learning opportunities in schools on schedule and within budget
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – September 18, 2013 – Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced the completion of its collaboration with telecommunication service provider, YTL Communications to deliver a scalable, cost-effective cloud platform for e-learning in schools. Red Hat’s enterprise open source solutions have enabled YTL Communications to complete the cloud platform project – known as 1BestariNet – six months ahead of schedule and within budget, while achieving lower cost of ownership and reducing project risks.
“Red Hat was selected as a key partner for the 1BestariNet project due to its ability to provide a cost-efficient platform by leveraging open source software. Red Hat’s highly scalable, affordable, open source model was the most effective in running a large-scale cloud deployment project like the 1BestariNet,” said Wing K. Lee, CEO, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.
Building a virtual learning infrastructure for 10,000 schools in 12 months
In December 2011, YTL Communications was contracted by the Ministry of Education to equip 10,000 primary and secondary public schools in Malaysia with a virtual learning infrastructure and provide high speed 4G Internet network access in just 12 months. Meeting the aggressive timeline required an unconventional departure from the traditional approach of deploying application servers in schools, to a cloud-based approach where 10,000 virtual learning environments (VLEs) and schools are deployed into the 1BestariNet cloud. This approach would enable all schools to access their individual school’s VLE via 1BestariNet or through any Internet connection.
YTL Communications based its search for a cloud solution based on criteria such as reliability, support, performance, and scalability. After evaluating solutions from various vendors, YTL Communications selected Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, and Red Hat Satellite Server, which met all of the above requirements.
The 1BestariNet VLE system currently runs on 60 Dell and Intel Xeon-based servers with 2,400 cores for virtualization hypervisors to support the distribution of applications to the schools.
Flexibility and Scalability with Enterprise Open Source Technology
Built on a flexible Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization infrastructure, the VLEs can continue to scale and support additional processing or storage capacity as and when needed. “This can be achieved by scaling out horizontally and through adding more physical processing and storage capacity to the virtualization farms,” Wing explained.
Cloud Environment Increases Efficiency of Application Deployment
Adopting a cloud-based approach has enabled YTL Communications to standardize and control its IT infrastructure, as well as roll out new applications, application modules, updates and content to schools in an efficient manner – all which contributes to meeting its deployment and budget requirements.
With Red Hat’s open source solutions, VLEs for 10,000 schools were built and deployed within the first six months of the project. Today, 5.5 million students, 500,000 teachers, and 5 million parents have access to the cloud-based VLE in 1BestariNet.
The success of this project has spurred YTL Communications to take the VLE one step further. “We are in the midst of rolling out further applications and promoting the use of mobile devices to access the cloud environment,” said Wing.

LTE is here! Gear Up for Higher Speeds in 2013! MCMC Issues Spectrum for 4G Mobile Broadband in the 2600 MHz Band
Cyberjaya: 5 December, 2012 --- Malaysians may not have to wait much longer to enjoy higher mobile broadband speeds. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has announced the allocation of the much anticipated 2600 MHz spectrum band, paving the way for Malaysians to enjoy 4G services which could offer mobile broadband speeds in excess of 100 Mbps.
The technology promises many news services to consumers such as high definition video streaming, enhanced user experience on real-time applications and better connectivity for mobile and consumer electronic devices.
Since the introduction of 3G and WiMAX technology in Malaysia, the demand for better quality mobile broadband service has intensified. This allocation is in line with similar initiatives in developed countries like the US and some European states. Market readiness for 4G technology is also reaching its maturity as increasingly, many of the latest devices in the global market support the use of this technology; hence the economies of scale will bring much benefit to the country.
Eight (8) companies will be allowed access to the 2600 MHz spectrum band. They are, in alphabetical order, Celcom Axiata Bhd, DiGi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Puncak Semangat Sdn Bhd, REDtone Marketing Sdn Bhd, U Mobile Sdn Bhd and YTL Communications Sdn Bhd.
MCMC Chairman Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi said, “MCMC is always committed to finding the right balance between the needs of consumers, investors and other stakeholders of the industry. We believe that the balance struck between ensuring healthy competition in the market and promoting industry development will help spur continued growth for existing service providers and provide opportunity for new market entrants.”
Existing service providers may use the 2600 MHz allocation to further expand and enhance the capacity of their mobile broadband networks to meet increasing consumer demands whilst the introduction of a new player is expected to bring fresh ideas and innovation to the market.
Service providers are also expected to enter into smart partnerships and sharing agreements between them which include spectrum and radio access network sharing in order to utilise larger bandwidths, lower the cost of roll out and offer better 4G-experience and affordability to consumers. Additionally, smart partnerships mean shared infrastructure thus reducing the duplication of physical transmission towers. 4G wholesale MVNO (Mobile Virtual Network Service) will also be offered to other service providers that do not get access to the allocation.
“With this new technology, the people can look forward to improvements in their digital lifestyle. For the business community, cloud services, teleworking, teleconferencing and video type applications can be better experienced whilst on the move,” said Dato’ Mohamed Sharil.
2.6 GHz Spectrum Allocated to P1
Kuala Lumpur, 6th December 2012 – South East Asia’s leading and one of the world’s first 4G service provider, Packet One Networks (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd (“P1”) has been allocated the access to 2.6 GHz spectrum by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
Michael Lai, CEO of P1 said, “We are thrilled to have been granted access to 20MHz of 2.6 GHz TD spectrum, and we thank the government, our Ministry and MCMC for their confidence in P1. Being one of the pioneers in the 4G world, we are definitely excited to be able to offer this next generation of 4G technology to Malaysians.”
“Being one of the Steering Committee Members of the Global TD-LTE Initiative (GTI), we are excited to be able to serve our subscribers with the 4G Time-Division Long-Term Evolution (TD-LTE) technology. Our subscribers will be among the first to taste and experience the latest 4G LTE technology. Continuing our mission of “Broadband for All”, this spectrum allocation will allow us to continue our commitment in bringing cutting-edge broadband technology to every single Malaysian. And simultaneously, contribute to our national broadband agenda and initiative,” he elaborated.
“We are ready for this, and we look forward to serving our customers even better with complete range of services from 4G wireless, Fiber, SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) services and wireless internet leased line,” Lai added.
U MOBILE AWARDED LTE SPECTRUM
Kuala Lumpur, 6th December, 2012 - U Mobile Sdn Bhd, Malaysia’s most dynamic and innovative telco service provider, is pleased to be awarded a 20MHz block of the 2.6GHz spectrum by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).
In a letter issued by MCMC yesterday, it was outlined that U Mobile was awarded a spectrum block which the company notes as strategic.
“The position of our block of spectrum is strategic in that it provides U Mobile with the option of sharing spectrum and possibly collaborating through smart partnerships with other telcos,” said Jaffa Sany Ariffin, U Mobile CEO. “By sharing spectrum we would hope to benefit from reduced rollout costs and pass those savings onto our consumers.”
Jaffa added, “When LTE services are commercially available, the benefit will be an enriching and exciting mobile experience for our customers and it will undoubtedly bring significant change to the way we experience mobile communication services. We thank the MCMC for awarding us the spectrum and we look forward to providing our customers with even faster mobile internet services.”
The allocation of the 2.6GHz spectrum blocks by MCMC to eight telecommunications players signifies the next phase of the evolution of mobile internet in Malaysia, as it provides the gateway for 4G or Long-Term Evolution (LTE) technology.
Through its LTE services, U Mobile will aim to provide an even better value proposition to its customers with improved technology delivering mobile internet with speeds up to 100 Mbps, better smartphones and applications.
As a result of the spectrum allocation, U Mobile is well placed to play its role in assisting the Government in achieving its national agenda to provide high speed mobile data services for all Malaysians.

Festive New Year celebrations at PC Fair 2011 Johor Bahru
Celebrate the New Year with cool bargains & hot savings at PC Expo 2011 Johor Bahru this week at Persada Johor International Convention Centre, December 30, 2011 to January 1, 2012.
DECEMBER 27, 2011, KUALA LUMPUR – Shop at PC Expo 2011 Johor Bahru this week and enjoy many New Year offers and bargains for consumer digital lifestyle devices like tablets and accessories. The three-day Expo will be held at Persada Johor International Convention Centre, from December 30, 2011 to January 1, 2012. According EM Exhibitions (M) Sdn Bhd project director Jeslynn Wong Lee Chen, this is the first time the Expo will be held “straddling” two years. “We will be ushering in this unique occasion with plenty of activities, fun games and special draws for visitors and shoppers alike,” she said.
The popular Expo will see a wide array of participating exhibitors including major participants like Digi Telecommunications Sdn Bhd, Hewlett-Packard (M) Sdn Bhd, Logitech Singapore Pte Ltd, MCL Bhd and Sony (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd. It will also feature local digital consumer retailers like Camera Zone Sdn Bhd, Grex Multimedia, ITStore Sdn Bhd, Khin Guan Corporation Sdn Bhd, Navotech Technology Sdn Bhd and Style Vision Sdn Bhd.
“As school reopens next week, we anticipate a large turnout at the Expo. Most students, families and entrepreneurs would take this opportunity to shop at the Expo and make ready for the coming new year,” she said, adding more than 70,000 shoppers are expected at the Expo this week. PC Expo 2011 is created and organised by EM Exhibitions.
She said Expo visitors are best placed to take advantage of year-end offers and bargains, especially for alternative tablets. For example, Andron IT Solutions Technology Sdn Bhd will be offering an Android 2.3.3 -based tablet, complete with a built-in 4GB memory and 2.0 mega pixel digital camera at RM299 instead of its retail price of RM499.
Another exhibitor, Grex Multimedia, will be offering the Lenovo K1 Tablet at RM999, instead of its retail price of RM1,299 while PCS Telecommunications will be touting a range of tablets from Samsung and HTC, like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 and Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0plus, both at RM1,699 each and HTC Flyer (Model P510e) at RM1,299. MaxQ Multimedia Sdn Bhd will also be offering its new Android-powered 7-inch tablet, MaxQ X7-3G, at an introductory offer of RM799 instead of RM999. “Tablet devices are currently trendy. Based from our observation, there exists pent-up demand for tablets at the RM1,000 price category. Shoppers will find a variety of options of tablets in this specific price category at the Expo this week.”
Apart from tablets, entry-level digital cameras, large screen LCD TVs and surprisingly digital projectors are also in demand. For example, Khin Guan, will be offering special deals for 19-inch to 32-inch LED and LCD television sets from as low as RM399 (for a 19-inch Toshiba LCD Model 19HV10E) to RM999 (for a 32-inch Toshiba LCD Model 32PB10E). On the higher end, visitors can also shop and opt for LG 3D monitors, at RM1,599 for a 32-inch LG 3D monitor, complete with two sets of 3D eye wear or full HD, 42-inch LG TVs at RM1,699. “Consumers understand the LCD or LED TV has evolved to essentially become a digital hub for the family with numerous functions like viewing digital images, video clips and more. This notion has taken a life of its own and becoming a lifestyle.” However, she said 3D displays are still viewed as novelty items but has a large potential.
Meanwhile MCL will be rewarding shoppers with a series of New year presents for purchases of InFocus IN122 at RM1,399 including a RM200 voucher or 6 feet projector wall screen or 2.1 speaker system. The IN122 is rated at 2,700 ANSI Lumens with a 6,000 hours lamp life and displays at a resolution rate of 800 X 600 (SVGA). MCL will also be offering special purchase-with-purchase offers including a Sensonic F10 2.1 Speaker System at RM29.90, Sensonic HVX220 cordless headset at RM49.90 and Sensonic UX6000 cordless keyboard and mouse at RM49.90. Special offers like RM10 for a 4GB Sandisk USB drive and RM169 for a 500GB Buffalo External Hard disk are also expected to attract visitors. The special offers will be available at two sessions per day; for the former at 12.00pm and 5.00pm while the latter at 1.00pm and 6.00pm. Every session will have 20 units of each device on offer. We are giving away a new Apple iPhone 4S as the top prize,” she said. The Expo will make its way to its final leg January 6, to 8, 2012 at Penang International Sports Arena in Penang. Yes 4G: one of the Most advanced Wireless Networks in the World
Through innovation, Yes sets the standard for mobile networks of the future, designed to perfectly meet the explosion in the demand for mobile data
Kuala lumpur — October 24, 2011 — YTL Communications’ drive to bring positive change through innovation is today validated with an IDC study that finds the Yes 4G network and its related services to be one of the most advanced in the world. In addition, IDC says that the Yes 4G network, which is perfectly designed to meet the explosion in mobile data usage, is an excellent model of a wireless network for the future.
The study which looked at the state of mobile communications industry in Malaysia, highlights YTL Communications’ core believe in delivering positive change to Malaysia and Malaysians through innovation. In addition, the study gives a clear indication of the advanced nature of the YTL Communications WiMAX-based Yes 4G network incorporating features and services that are truly unique and not currently available anywhere else in the world. This is an amazing feat for a network that is just only coming to its first anniversary this November.
“IDC’s findings bring credence to what we have been saying all along. Yes is the most advanced 4G network in the world and Malaysians should be proud of this fact. With the Yes network, Malaysia has become a model country for how mobile networks of the future should be engineered and built. This is truly amazing considering that it has only been a year since we began commercial operations in November 2011,” said Wing K. Lee, Chief Executive Officer, YTL Communications.
Several key innovations built into the Yes 4G network that sets it apart from other wireless networks currently available in the world include:
At its core, the Yes 4G network architecture is among the best and most advanced in the world, capable of offering services not available anywhere else such as user ID-based unified communications, session concurrency for data and telephony and a high-performance mobile data network that delivers superior data connectivity even at high speeds (mobile connectivity at speeds up to 160km/h)
A highly flexible mobile telephony and text messaging service that sets the standard for mobile networks of the future. Yes is the only network in the world that allows multiple and concurrent connections providing subscribers with flexibility and significant cost savings because they only need one account for telephony and data services even when using multiple devices and locations.
A suite of applications called Yes Life that is free for all customers. Yes Life works perfectly on Mac and Windows computers as well as iOS (iPod touch, iPhone, iPad) and Android devices. Yes Life enables these devices with full mobile phone functionality. Harnessing the power of the Yes ID, which comes with a dedicated mobile number, Yes subscribers can make and receive calls and SMSes from anywhere in the world (including Malaysia), on their favourite devices at a low RM0.09/min of voice call or RM0.09/text message to all Malaysian numbers. Customers can also enjoy the benefits of not paying expensive roaming charges when using Yes Life when traveling overseas.
A true mobile broadband service with consistent speeds three to five times faster than any wireless network in the country.
Commenting on the mobile communications landscape in Malaysia, the IDC study also looked into the two dominant 4G technologies in the country – LTE and WiMAX – and the prospects of the two technologies in Malaysia. IDC found that although LTE would be a strong competitor to WiMAX in the future, it is doubtful that the future LTE operators in Malaysia would deploy networks in a similar manner to Yes’ unified communications approach (with VoIP being a very integral part of the network) for fear of cannibalizing 3G voice cash flows.
Furthermore, YTL Communications’, monumental deployment of over 2,000 base stations currently and an extensive 65% population coverage footprint since day one (largest 4G network in Malaysia) is not likely to be emulated by other operators looking to deploy its own 4G network. This network is currently support by a sales channel that has grown rapidly from 600 outlets in December 2010 to over 2,000 to date.
In essence, the IDC study reveals that while technology standards play an important role in the development of 4G networks in Malaysia, what is even more important is the willingness for operators to undergo a paradigm shift from a predominantly voice-centric business model to a data and service-centric business model.
While operators are willing to adopt new technologies to deliver better data performance, innovating the traditional mobile communications business, can prove to be an even bigger challenge.
“We are tremendously inspired by IDC’s findings and this will spur us to bring even more innovations to our customers. More importantly our short-term goal will be to expand the reach of the Yes 4G network even further thus enabling communities to leap from 2G to 4G to enjoy the many benefits of our advanced network services ” Wing concluded.
Earlier this month, Yes was awarded “Best New Service” at the prestigious 2011 Broadband InfoVision Awards. With the win, YTL Communications joins an elite list of operators from around the world including, British Telecoms, Australia’s Telstra and Hong Kong’s PCCW, all of which have been past winners at the annual Broadband InfoVision Awards.
Notable excerpts from the IDC report:
“YTL wants to differentiate its service from its competitors by offering true mobile broadband speeds with more consistent coverage than what the 3G operators are delivering today. At the same time, YTL wants its users to experience broadband UC such as video calling in the mobile environment, which is virtually impossible with 3G today in Malaysia.”
“YTL wanted from the outset an Internet compatible, SIM-less architecture that offers users device independence. Thus, the handset does not need to use a SIM card to access the network. Entry into the Yes service begins with the selection of a User ID (Yes ID) and each Yes ID comes with a Malaysian mobile number. YTL has also designed a novel mechanism to enable service concurrency. The end result is that for the first time, a customer can use the same account for all his devices and products. This simple but elegant approach results in tangible savings and added convenience for the customer.”
“One of the key challenges in the planning of the Yes network was to ensure that there would be enough coverage and capacity from day one so that users can experience continuous mobile broadband service even along the highways. YTL launched its Yes 4G service in November 2011 with coverage of 65% of the population with 1,200 BTS (base-stations). Over the last six months, it has increased coverage to 1,700 cell sites including full mobile Internet coverage on Malaysia's North-South Expressway that runs from the Singapore border to the Thai border — a first in Malaysian history. So far, YTL has invested some US$250 million. It has contracted Samsung to provide 2,500 BST which means it still has the ability to deploy and cover more areas and to further increase capacity.”
“In terms of its speed, at the time of writing, its average download and upload speeds surpasses all other major mobile operators including its 4G rival, P1.”
“The Yes 4G service offers what IDC would consider true mobile broadband bandwidth (i.e., more than 1mbps downlink most of the time) with consistent coverage, so that users can experience UC (unified communications) with video calling in a mobile environment which is virtually impossible with 3G today. The only technologies that can compete with 802.16e in terms of performance would be HSPA+ and LTE. LTE will not come into the picture until 2013 in Malaysia. As for HSPA+, Maxis just rolled out this service in a limited scale last year and Celcom has only moved forward with upgrade plans this year.”
“YTL chose a prepaid billing system with real-time charging but offers postpaid-like service packages. In particular, users can use their credit cards to top up their accounts on a pay-as-you-go basis or purchase reload cards. On top of that, YTL has provided the ability to carry over unused data, minutes, or SMS to the next month with its Valuepack offerings. The advantage of the prepaid billing system is that it has realtime charging capabilities and the postpaid services are actually provisioned on top of the prepaid system. This architecture gives YTL great flexibility to offer packages suitable to the changing needs of the market.”
“YTL's UC (unified communications) solution is unique in that it would work even if users do not have a WiMAX device. The Yes service allows inbound and outbound calls and SMS messaging through their mobile devices and desktop/laptop software, while still tied to the same mobile station international ISDN (MSISDN) number. YTL is pioneering the multi-device UC concept where the receiver of a call, when contacted via his phone number, will have a concurrent ring across devices. This gives the user the choice of accepting the call either on his/her mobile phone, computer, or regular PSTN phone connected through the Yes home gateway.”
“YTL launched its 4G WiMAX service in November 2010 in a market that is considered to be underserved in terms of fixed and wireless broadband access but well served in terms of mobile (GSM) voice access.”
“YTL's venture into the WiMAX space would represent the first in Asia/Pacific and possibly globally to offer mobile voice services over the WiMAX data channel putting it ahead of its 4G competitors; but this also means YTL will be in competition with the three big mobile players Maxis, Celcom, and DiGi.”
“YTL's Yes service currently offers two distinct competitive advantages compared to the other operators. It is the only provider to offer a UC solution with a single-number reach concept for the consumer. On top of that, network performance is above its competition. If YTL can execute its coverage expansion as planned and can deliver mobile broadband smoothly to end users while managing exploding traffic demands, then IDC believes it can play an exciting and disruptive role in the Malaysia mobile market by raising the bar for mobile broadband on the go and in the home or office”
“IDC believes that YTL, despite its network being new and needing more time to build a critical mass of users, has made technology and business choices that offer an excellent example of innovation that 4G operators (LTE and WiMAX) will need in order to survive the challenge of exploding traffic usage, broadband + social networking + video, and to have the tools to better understand user usage patterns in real time. Unlike most of the 3G community that are extremely cautious in deploying VoIP over LTE, YTL is not shying away from it but rather embracing it wholeheartedly.”

Yes Expands Sales Channel to East Coast to meet Growing demand
Expansive sales network of over 37 authorised retailers and distributors to serve growing demand of internet hungry customers in the East Coast
KUANTAN — October 22, 2011 — Yes, one of the most advanced 4G networks in the world, today announced that it has expanded its sales network to Malaysia’s East Coast to meet a growing demand for mobile internet services in the region. The Yes sales network comprising over 37 authorised retailers and distributors will support its customers in Pahang, Terengganu and Kelantan to help boost broadband penetration in outlying cities and towns within these states.
In conjunction with the announcement, Yes also launched its first official East Coast outlet in East Coast Mall, Kuantan, Pahang. The fully operational outlet located on the second floor of the mall comes complete with demo stations and registration counters and is opened seven days a week from 10am to 10pm. Customers can look forward to experiencing true 4G performance that is three to five times faster than 3G, along with a host of other innovative services including Yes’s unique unified communications solution.
Unlike conventional mobile networks, Yes’s unified communications solution replaces physical SIM cards with a single user ID to offer subscribers seamless connectivity across multiple devices concurrently. The Yes service allows subscribers to be contacted on any device, whether mobile phone or computer using just one single 018 number. This innovation is the first of its kind in Malaysia and the world.
“I am tremendously delighted that with the expansion of our sales channel and the launch of our first ever East Coast outlet, Yes is now able to serve even more Malaysians with our advanced 4G network. We look forward to bringing world class mobile Internet, telephony and more to enable East Coast cities with a level playing field to fundamentally improve the way people live, work and play. With a network that delivers three to five times faster speeds than any 3G network in the country and with some of the most competitive price points in the industry, this marks another significant milestone in enabling Malaysia’s goal of becoming a high-income economy. No other operator in Malaysia can offer the same performance or value!” said Wing K. Lee, CEO, YTL Communications.
In November 2010, Yes launched its 4G mobile Internet with voice service on a nationwide scale. With its network spanning over 65% of Malaysia’s population, the company has deployed over 2,000 base stations with more than 2,000 others to be built by 2012. Yes is the only wireless operator that can offer uninterrupted 4G data and voice connectivity along the full 966km span of the North-South Expressway – Malaysia’s longest highway. And with the launch today, we are pleased to announce the availability of our superior mobile broadband connectivity on the East-West Expressway. Barely a year old, Yes has over 380,000 subscribers to date.
Globally recognized at the Broadband World Forum 2011 in Paris recently, Yes won the prestigious Broadband InfoVision Awards 2011 under the ‘Best New Service’ category. This is a strong validation of the innovation YTL Communications is pioneering.
In addition to expanding its sales network to serve key markets beyond West Coast, Yes is also planning to supplement its current offerings with new plans and packages that make its world-class services even more affordable to markets outside urban centres. Yes is confident that the new soon-to-be released packages will serve as a catalyst for Malaysians outside city centres to adopt its innovative mobile broadband with voice that will improve their lives.
“The East Coast market is very important to us. We see a lot of potential for growth in these three states. There is also an increasing awareness and demand for internet, especially with high performance mobile broadband. At the same time, we also understand that offering these world-class services at a competitive price point is crucial to make mobile Internet enticing and a true pathway to close the digital divide.” Mr. Lee concluded.
