The Children’s Cancer Foundation is Now Part of “Purple Hope”

SINGAPORE, 7 OCTOBER, 2011 |
The Children’s Cancer Foundation (CCF) is the first beneficiary of “Purple Hope”, a community initiative to raise funds and increase awareness of childhood cancer.

This project will run from 10 – 14 October, initiated by the premier digital media company – Yahoo!, and the dedicated micro site (http://sg.news.yahoo.com/purplehope/) will feature articles and interviews with children and families affected by cancer. Through the sponsored CCF micro site, viewers will be able to make a financial donation directly to the charity and be eligible for 2.5 times tax exemption. At the same time they can support the personal fund-raising pledges made by the Yahoo! staff in support of the cause.

The CCF, which was founded in 1992 with a mission to improve the quality of life for children suffering from cancer and their families, was chosen for this first “Purple Hope” initiative after one of the Yahoo! staff made a personal pledge during the Hair for Hope campaign earlier in the year. Lorna Tan, Finance Director at Yahoo! Singapore is already one of CCF’s highest personal contributors and it was a show of team support to further her lead and adopt CCF as the first project partner for the Yahoo! “Purple Hope” program.Ms Chee Wai Yee, the Executive Director for CCF and Ms Yvonne Chang, Managing Director of Yahoo! Southeast Asia at the launch of a community CSR initiative “Purple Hope” by Yahoo!

Ms Chee Wai Yee, the Executive Director for CCF who was present at the inaugural event said she was thrilled that CCF was chosen as the first beneficiary for “Purple Hope” and acknowledged the 12 shavees who were supporting the cause through the symbolic gesture of shaving their hair. “We need more support and encouragement from everyone, to raise awareness about our cause and provide moral support to children and their families while they are undergoing cancer treatment. We hope while learning more on the news site, the Singapore community will also come forward donate generously.”

Ms Yvonne Chang, Managing Director of Yahoo! Southeast Asia, said, “We have a history of social engagement here at Yahoo! and also a culture that nurtures personal passion. We are thrilled to be able to bring this campaign to life and support one of our own, and at the same time provide support for a local cause which brings positive and tangible help to patients and their families every day.” Unveiling the Purple Hope community initiative at a media event, she concluded, “Through Yahoo!’s reach, reputation and engagement, we are able to turn an idea into a movement and inspire people to act, especially for a good cause.”

In support of “Purple Hope”, 12 Yahoo! employees have pledged their hair and made other personal commitments to support the CCF. In the spirit of “community engagement” through making donations to the cause, the Yahoo! audience will decide who gets to lose their hair.

The CCF aims to improve the quality of life of children with cancer and their families through enhancing their emotional, social and medical well-being. They hope to become a world-class provider of resources and psycho-social services to children and families impacted by childhood cancer.

BRINGING SEXY BLACK – CISCO TURNS UP THE STYLE FACTOR FOR MODERN HOMES

Sleek New Designs in Ultra Stylish Home Networking Products Combine Performance and Simplicity with Chic Sophistication

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, 6 October 2011 – Decorating around technology can be an arduous process for new homeowners, interior designers and decorators. Today, Cisco unveiled its new suite of home networking products, featuring black sophistication to inspire modern home designs.

Held at Bakita Restaurant & Bar at the popular and upmarket Changkat Bukit Bintang, celebrity emcee and author Xandria Ooi hosted the intimate launch amongst some sixty invited media and guests. Working with Jade Yong, co-founder of the Home@8 interior design portal, the hosts teamed up with Cisco to redecorate the upper level of Bakita to simulate a stylish modern home interior – integrated with the new Linksys X3000 Advanced Wireless-N ADSL2+ Modem Router and Linksys RE1000 Wireless-N Range Extender.“At Cisco, we believe in offering the most enriching experience to our customers,” said Tang Boon Ping, Regional Sales Director, Asia, Cisco Home Networking Business Unit. “Technology is no longer just a means to communicate but an experience ingrained into our way of life. With Internet enabled TVs, tablets, game consoles and smart phones steadily appearing in every house, the Linksys suite of home networking products is poised to be the engine behind today’s connected home, providing the connectivity power and performance in a sleek stylish design.”

The Linksys suite of home networking products carries a sleek black design, following the award-winning design of the Linksys E4200 Maximum Performance Wireless-N router which garnered Cisco the prestigious red dot design award for outstanding product design earlier this year. The Linksys E4200 wireless router emerged as one of the award winners from a total of 4,433 product entries from designers and companies in sixty countries in one of the most renowned international product design competitions.

Xandria, who recently moved into a new home with husband, music composer and producer, Yuri Wong, underlined how technology has become integral to decorating one’s home. She said, “Decorating our home around technology requires an art and Cisco has provided some smart solutions that are powerful, user-friendly and gorgeous to look at. Whether for work or play, home networking has become part and parcel of the modern lifestyle. The new Linksys products give me wireless freedom in every corner of my home but also blend seamlessly into the décor theme.”

Jade teamed up with popular DJ Serena C a year ago to set up their own online interior design portal, Home@8. She spoke on how the colour black has turned into a home trend amongst modern homes today.

“Serena and I travel extensively to different cities across the globe, experiencing their cultures and drawing inspirations for home designs which we write about on Home@8. We have constantly observed how black transforms the interior of a home by adding shadows for a sense of depth. It also adds colour accents to an otherwise dull palette. Without black, there is no avenue for contrast. The latest home networking products from Cisco accentuate the modern home perfectly with their sleek black design.”

The all-new Linksys X3000 modem router is an easy all-in-one solution that works with either a DSL or cable broadband connections to create a high speed wireless home network. For those who stay in a larger home, the Linksys RE1000 range extender helps boost the signal strength of the Wireless-N connection, extending the coverage of existing home wireless networks.

Fortinet Expands Consolidated Security Appliance Line for Mid-Range Enterprise Market

New FortiGate-300C, FortiGate-600C and FortiGate-1000C Appliances Extend Price/Performance Leadership for Strategic Market Segment

MALAYSIA, 6 October 2011- Fortinet - a leading network security provider and the worldwide leader of unified threat management (UTM) solutions – today announced the introduction of three new consolidated security appliances that extend the company’s price/performance leadership in the strategic mid-range market segment that includes medium size businesses, enterprise customers, application service providers (ASPs) and software-as-a-service (SaaS) providers.

The new FortiGate-300C, FortiGate-600C and FortiGate-1000C appliances deliver price/performance breakthroughs that broaden UTM deployment options for mid-sized organizations and branch offices of large enterprises that require high-performance, highly resilient security capable of protecting critical assets from a wide variety of threats. This includes organizations looking to secure their mobile users and those that wish to ensure that cloud-based data does not transfer threats into their systems. Each appliance is particularly well suited for customers that must protect personally identifiable information (PII) from accidental leakage or theft. This includes credit card data as part of the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) and patient data as part of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance.

Coupled with Fortinet’s FortiClient solution, the new FortiGate appliances will play a pivotal role in extending high-performance virtual private networks (VPNs) to a wider range of customers, thus ensuring secure communications between multiple networks and hosts using SSL and IPSec VPN technologies.

About the FortiGate-300C

Designed with eight FortiASIC-accelerated ports for maximum throughput, the FortiGate-300C delivers wire-speed firewall and IPSec VPN performance as well as application control acceleration to provide optimized security capabilities without imposing latency in high-speed network environments. For example, eight Gbps firewall throughput can support one million concurrent sessions. And with the ability to support 4.5 Gbps of IPSec throughput, 10,000 client-to-gateway and 6,000 gateway-to-gateway IPSec tunnels can be supported with a single device. The accelerated 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports on the FortiGate-300C also facilitate the creation and enforcement of segmented security zones with policy control previously available only within larger-scale solutions.

About the FortiGate-600C

Powered by the FortiASIC Network Processor, the FortiGate-600C appliance delivers security throughput at switching speeds. To maximize internal network segmentation configurations, the FortiGate-600C provides sixteen 10/100/1000 RJ45 ports, allowing security administrators and IT managers a wide array of deployment options. The appliance also provides four shared 10/100/1000 RJ45 ports, a 1Gb SFP and two-pair, bypass-protected 10/100/1000 ports to accommodate expansion options well beyond the base system configuration. In addition, the FortiGate-600C appliance features 64GB of internal storage for WAN optimization, local reporting, or local content archiving.

About the FortiGate-1000C

Like the other FortiGate models, the FortiGate-1000C utilizes FortiASIC processors that use an intelligent content scanning engine to accelerate security and network services. To accommodate flexible deployment and expansion options, the FortiGate-1000C provides dual AC power supplies, two 10Gb SFP+ ports, twelve 10/100/1000 RJ-45 ports, eight shared 10/100/1000 RF-45 ports,1G SFP and two-pair bypass protected 10/100/1000 ports. The 128GB of onboard flash memory for WAN optimization eliminates unnecessary and malicious traffic, optimizes legitimate traffic and reduces the amount of bandwidth required to transmit data between applications and servers.

The new FortiGate devices feature the FortiOS 4.3 security operating system to deliver a broad suite of security services, including advanced application control, firewall, intrusion prevention, anti-virus/anti-spyware technology, VPN, SSL-encrypted traffic inspection, data leakage prevention, and Web filtering. Fortinet’s FortiOS also provides an integrated wireless controller, enabling centralized management of FortiAP secure access points and wireless LANs. Unauthorized wireless traffic is blocked, while allowed traffic is subject to identity-aware multi-threat security inspection.

“We continue to hear from mid-range customers and prospects about pushing the price/performance envelope for consolidated security solutions that are broad in scope, easy to deploy and can be centrally managed,” said Michael Xie, co-founder, CTO and vice president of engineering at Fortinet. “The introduction of our new FortiGate models addresses each of these needs head on. No other products in this class can match the combined performance and consolidated security services of these new appliances.”

Availability

The FortiGate-300C is already available. The FortiGate-600C and FortiGate-1000C appliances will be available later this quarter.

IBM Broadens Efforts to Prepare Small and Medium Enterprises for Growth

Provides US$1 Billion (RM3.2 billion) In Financing; Launches New Cloud and Business Analytics Offerings

Petaling Jaya, 6 October, 2011 -- IBM Global Financing, the leasing and loan segment of IBM (NYSE:IBM), today announced that it will provide US$1 billion (RM3.2 billion) in financing to help credit-qualified small and medium enterprises (SMEs) over the next 18 months take advantage of a new suite of advanced technologies such as analytics and cloud. This effort is designed to help SMEs spur innovation and drive economic growth by making credit more easily accessible.

Financing is one of the biggest challenges limiting the success of SMEs today. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) consistently reports that well over 50 percent of small businesses fail within their first five years due to lack of capital. Since this segment is responsible for nearly 65 percent of global GDP, representing more than 90 percent of all businesses and employing more than 90 percent of the world’s workforce, SMEs play a critical role in a global economic recovery.

Today's news addresses the urgent need for capital by providing the right foundation and resources to support SMEs in this economy. IBM's US$1 billion in financing for SMEs is designed to eliminate many of the cost barriers they face to grow their business. IBM will offer simple financing solutions, some starting at as low as 0 percent for 12 months with no down payment,* allowing them to immediately acquire the IBM technology and services they need to begin to transform their businesses, while managing their cash flow more effectively.

This financing will be made available to SME clients in Malaysia through IBM Business Partners who can benefit from enhanced online financing tools to generate price proposals and get approvals for credit applications for SME clients in less than a day, all available by a simple click of the mouse.

As part of today's announcement, IBM is also launching a comprehensive set of new solutions, which include workload optimized systems combining hardware and software and services offerings focused on technologies, such as cloud, analytics, collaboration and security, specifically designed to address SMEs’ key needs. IBM aims to help this segment by making these advanced technologies, once reserved for larger enterprises with large budgets, available to SMEs through IBM Business Partners at an affordable price. These new offerings also introduce technologies from IBM's recent cloud, analytics and security acquisitions such as Cast Iron, BigFix, SPSS, Netezza and Cognos.

Clients can now take advantage of these new technologies with no money down and by simply making monthly or quarterly financing payments. For example, many of the offerings are less than $5 per user per month (over 36 months) for 100 users. In addition, these technologies can now be up and running in a matter of two to three days, saving SMEs up to 50 percent in cost and time.

The IBM solutions will help SMEs deploy a cloud platform quickly and help SME clients free their employees from worrying about IT and the significant costs associated with it. In a recent IBM Midmarket survey of 650 CIOs, half are looking to invest in cloud over the next five years, a 50 percent increase in demand for cloud since the last CIO study in 2009. Cloud solutions can also help SMEs automate their IT infrastructure, allowing their staffs to shift more attention to strategic projects focused on growth.

The new solutions also include analytics for SMEs to tackle "Big Data" challenges to help better extract insight and spot trends to make better business decisions and identify new market opportunities. These offerings will combine technologies from IBM's recent acquisitions. In fact, the survey highlighted analytics as the top priority by more than 83 percent of CIOs.

In addition to software, services and financing, IBM offers a variety of ways for entrepreneurs to grow their businesses with no-charge access to advanced technologies, leading business and technology experts and training. Tricubes Unveils myemail Services

Kuala Lumpur, Wednesday, 5 October: TRICUBES BERHAD (TRICUBES) today highlighted the various functions and services of myemail, which have been made available to the general public since September 14, following two months of beta testing.

The myemail service is a free email initiative allowing Malaysians direct and secure communication with government agencies. It will also provide subscribers with high volume, secure, electronic document delivery solutions as well as exclusive promotions.
[Left to Right] Muzaffar Ariff (Support and Content Manager Tricubes Berhad), Khairun bin Zainal Mokhtar (Chief Executive Officer Tricubes Berhad) and S. Vishnu Shankar (Vice President of Software & Services of Tricubes Berhad).

Tricubes’ chief executive Khairun Zainal Mokhtar said that one of myemail’s value propositions is that the service pushes bills, notices and statements to customers rather than requiring them to pull their bills from billers’ or third party portals, thus providing an extra convenience.

Furthermore, as users are authenticated and verified using myKad, billers are assured that documents are sent to the right person. He said that the e-billing service for notices and bill presentment also enable cost-savings for billers in terms of printing and postage.

myemail is based on the Microsoft Windows Live platform, providing registered users with the advantages of Windows Live features such as unlimited email space, 25 GB cloud storage and access to online Microsoft tools which allows users to create, modify, share and store documents online.

Tricubes has also signed up with its first four partners; JackCow, WeddingKami, Allscript and Tutor.com.

On the company’s financial status, Khairun said that Tricubes is on track towards financial regularisation. As a part its future revenue generation plan, Tricubes has expanded its business strategies to include an online business vertical that encompasses mass market and business-to-business solutions.

“myemail is the part of our online business which reaches out to the public. The B2B solution, which targets small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is Tam Tam Customer Relationship Management. Both use the same cloud infrastructure,” said Khairun.

Tricubes’ current enterprise segment business encompasses identity authentication solutions (IAS) and enterprise mobility solutions (EMS).

“In order to grow our revenue, we have to scale up our business faster. We used to spend a lot on R&D to develop the technology for very niche clients and we are now leveraging it with a more mass market approach via the online business, which optimises our existing technology,” said Khairun.

Recently, Tricubes announced the acceptance of a contract from Polis DiRaja Malaysia (PDRM) for the supply, delivery, installation testing and commissioning of PDRM’s mobile access devices used for online enquiries by over 3,000 police personnel. The contract, valued at RM4.4 million will be for three years, is part of the Tricubes’ EMS offerings.

Over the last 13 years, Tricubes has been a leading supplier in the IAS segment with an installed base of over 50,000 biometrics and smartcard devices to over 200 organisations.

“Moving forward, the IAS segment will remain a strong contributor to the company’s revenue. This is achieved through new customer-base as well as device and technology replacements from our existing customers,” added Khairun.

TUNE TALK HIRES VIRAL VIDEOMAKER TO BOOST SOCIAL MEDIA INTERACTION

KUALA LUMPUR, 5 October 2011 - In an unprecedented move, Tune Talk has become the first Malaysian telco to hire its fans via the social media to help enhance interaction with subscribers and fans via the new media platform particularly Facebook and YouTube.

It all started in August when an anonymous fan called ‘tropicgang’ posted a video on YouTube featuring a beefy puppet character dedicated for Tune Talk’s second birthday. Aptly entitled ‘Who Like Confuse’, the video highlighted in a very entertaining way Tune Talk’s single subscription plan that is utterly simple, straightforward and transparent. It instantly caught the eyes of Tune Talk’s CEO, Jason Lo and Chairman Tan Sri Tony Fernandes and after a series of message exchanges on YouTube and Twitter, Jason and ‘tropicgang’ finally met and negotiations began behind closed doors.Another video was recently released confirming that Tune Talk has hired ‘tropicgang’ to manage and interact with Tune Talk fans via Facebook and YouTube. ‘tropicgang’ has since agreed to create more ‘Mat Tune’ music videos, which will be released monthly from now until December 2011.

‘Tropicgang’ however wants to remain anonymous and prefers to be known by its character ‘Mat Tune’.
Talking about what he thought of the tribute video, Jason said: “Mat Tune broke away from the typical cover song format of a bedroom musician. Tony and I were impressed at its quirky mix of in-your-face humour, original scripting and creative use of puppets.”

The YouTube video was first brought to Tune Talk’s attention on 19 August 2011. Some magazines and bloggers discovered the video, posted it on their respective Facebook walls, and tagged Tune Talk. From there, the video quickly gained widespread attention, earning 5,000 views within a week, and sky-rocketing to over 24,000 views to date. Dubbed by Tune Talk’s Facebook fans as the ’tetek guys’, the tribute video is catchy and addictive. ’Who Like Confuse’ became an instant YouTube hit, sparking Jason to publicly search on Twitter for the fans who made the video.

“Mat Tune now is building his popularity and career since his “Who Like Confuse” music video became viral on YouTube. We have many interesting things planned for them. Social media has become a key channel of communication and that is why we have decided to hire “tropicgang” a.k.a. Mat Tune. We would like to use this new discovery to engage our fans with content that is relevant to them regardless of whether they are our subscribers or not. You don’t always have to sell people something, have a little fun derr! ” said Jason Lo.

Fans can now look forward to more quirky music videos, fun interaction and surprise rewards with “Mat Tune” by following him on Tune Talk’s Facebook page: www.facebook.com/tunetalk

MSC Malaysia to Boost Cloud Ecosystem for SMEs

MSC Malaysia’s Cloud Initiative to accelerate ICT adoption and promote locally made software and services

Kuala Lumpur, 5 October 2011 – Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) today launched the MSC Malaysia Cloud Initiative, which is focused on stepping up development of the cloud ecosystem in Malaysia. Aimed at driving the adoption of cloud-based services, the programme will enable MSC Malaysia Independent Software Vendors (ISVs) to deploy cloud software and services as a utility, while catalyzing demand by local enterprises for Made in Malaysia cloud software and services.

“The potential in terms of the spending on cloud computing services, is expected to surpass USD160 billion worldwide by 2020. In Malaysia, Frost & Sullivan expects the Malaysian Business Application as a Service (BAaaS) market to reach a market size of USD161.4 million by 2017. With the MSC Malaysia Cloud Initiative, we are seeking to capitalise on this potential by kick-starting a robust cloud ecosystem locally.Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, CEO, MDeC and Vijay Tharumartnam, Director of Corporate Communications, MDeC, addressing the media during the press conference

“Key to our success will not only be the creation of a ready marketplace for cloud services but also establishing a framework of standards and incentives to encourage users, particularly Malaysia SMEs, to adopt cloud computing services. Our target by end-2012 is to enable a total of 60 ISVs with an on-boarding programme and stimulus package to develop and promote Malaysian Made cloud applications and services,” said Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, CEO of MDeC.

Under the ISV enablement initiative, MSC Malaysia will collaborate with world-class Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) partners to firstly identify industry applications that are in demand and secondly to qualify MSC Malaysia ISVs that wish to participate in the initiative.

With the primary objective of lowering the barriers to entry for ISVs to migrate to the cloud, the aptly named Cloud On-Boarding Programme (COP) is being designed in collaboration with leading PaaS partners to cover comprehensive cloud training programmes, trial and proof-of-concept, hands-on to cloud software and tools, and guidance from expert technical consultants. Under the COP, the cost of on-boarding will be shared, with MDeC providing up to RM 15,000 in funds and MDeC’s PaaS partners providing free access to Software Development Kits (SDKs), as well as training and consultation on migration to the cloud also worth RM 15, 000.

Under the SaaS Acceleration Programme, qualified ISVs will also be entitled to a disbursement of RM 15,000 from MDeC along with a specially negotiated IaaS/PaaS package and subscription cost covering bandwidth, storage service and/or computer service for the first few months, also worth RM 15, 000.

In total, an allocation of RM30, 000 (worth of disbursement and other benefits) per vendor has been set aside for the development of 60 MSC Malaysia ISVs under the INFOTECH cluster by 2012.

In order to accelerate the market for cloud computing applications in Malaysia, MSC Malaysia will also introduce SME Cloud Computing Adoption Programme will allow local SMEs to adopt and utilize leading solutions by MSC Malaysia Status companies while enjoying incentivized subscription. A total of 1,500 SMEs by end-2012 are expected to benefit from this programme, receiving an allocation of up RM1, 500.00 or 6 months of subscription per recipient, whichever is lower.

To be eligible for the ISV programmes, ISVs must be an MSC Malaysia status company, be minimum 51% Malaysian owned and be registered with official MDeC IaaS/PaaS partners.

The MSC Malaysia Cloud Initiative ties back to one of the key targets of MSC Malaysia Phase 3, which is the infusion of technology across all economic sectors to drive productivity and innovation by lowering the barrier of entry for ICT companies and SMEs alike.

As of October 2011, the confirmed infrastructure partners of the MSC Malaysia Cloud Initiative are Maxis and Jaring.

Business keeps hiring, despite dip in confidence

Malaysian businesses still taking on employees, though outlook not as bright, finds Regus Business Confidence Index

MALAYSIA, 5 October 2011 | Malaysian businesses are still taking on staff, even though their views on economic growth are not as positive as they were a year ago, as almost three quarters (70%) of Malaysian companies report that they plan to increase headcount in the next two years. This is despite a downturn in the Regus Business Confidence Index, in which Malaysia has slipped thirty-seven points from April 2011, to 117 this autumn. As an indicator of the changing structure of employment, hiring intentions show a particular emphasis on freelancers, graduates and remote workers – as firms seek competitive advantage now and growth in the months to come.

· In Malaysia, a fifth (21%) of companies have pushed back their expectations for recovery to the second half of 2012;

· The proportion of Malaysian companies revenue growth (52%) has fallen twenty two percent compared with six months ago, those reporting profit growth (32%) has fallen thirty two percentage points over the period;

· Nevertheless, almost three quarters (70%) of companies plan to hire more employees over the next two years. Signaling a clear move toward more flexible working practices, 57% of Malaysian companies say they plan to hire more freelance staff and 43% will employ more remote workers in 2011/12.

William Willems, Regional Vice-President, for Regus Australia, New Zealand and South-East Asia comments, “The report finds that, six months on from a rosy start to 2011, the global outlook has suffered a clear reverse. The proportion of companies reporting revenues and profit growth has close to stalled and expectations for the full momentum of recovery have slipped yet again and are now set for the second half of 2012. However, national business sentiment and activity does not seem to be unduly affected, with businesses actively investing in their most valuable asset: people power.

“In Malaysia, freelance and remote working are becoming an increasingly popular solution to increase headcount while remaining flexible and rapidly scalable. In addition to this, by taking advantage of solutions already available on the market it is possible for even very small operations to establish a low-risk presence in their target markets without making lengthy premises or equipment commitments and allowing them to expand or withdraw depending on volatile market conditions.”

Additionally, the most up-to-date postal information available in the US and Canada is especially important for Enterprise and Business customers.

The latest product release resulted in an Address Point uplift totaling more than 1.5 million throughout Asia Pacific, enabling more accurate routing and geocoding in this important region. 3D Landmarks, Landmark Icons, 2D City Maps and Junction Views were also updated, resulting in better visualization with a more realistic map display.
