Microsoft Malaysia Appoints 6 New Surface Authorized Commercial Resellers To Support Growing Demand By Businesses

More businesses are turning to Surface as a device of choice for its productivity capabilities in a consumer-friendly form factor

KUALA LUMPUR, 1 October 2013 — As part of a measured and phased approach to support the growth of its Surface business, Microsoft Malaysia welcomed six new authorized resellers to the Microsoft Devices Program. The program establishes a newly designated group of authorized device resellers in Malaysia to support the growing demand by Malaysian businesses for the Surface device, hailed for its productivity capabilities in a consumer-friendly form factor. The newly appointed commercial resellers, which will be ready to transact today are:
Alphamatic Systems Sdn Bhd
CTC Global Sdn Bhd
Felda Prodata Systems Sdn Bhd
Jardine OneSolution Sdn Bhd
Night Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd
Sistem RKK Sdn Bhd

It was further announced that Ingram Micro Malaysia Sdn Bhd would serve as the sole distributor to the authorized commercial device resellers.

2.       Yew Lip Sin, Managing Director from Sistem RKK (SRKK) Sdn Bhd
3.       Gan Boon Tan, Senior General Manager from Alphamatic Systems Sdn Bhd
4.       Azizah Ali, Director of Small and Medium Solutions and Partners, Microsoft Malaysia
5.       Dennis Koh, Managing Director from CTC Global (CTCG) Sdn Bhd
6.       Ahmad Bin Ismail, Managing Director from Night Electronics (M) Sdn Bhd
7.       Azly Sham Kamarudin, Chief Executive Officer from Felda Prodata Systems (PRODATA) Sdn Bhd.

Today’s commercial expansion is in line with Microsoft’s continual commitment in bringing improved productivity and mobile services to businesses with Surface. With the addition of Malaysia, the total markets that have announced commercial channel availability for Surface is now 29 countries, including the latest countries – Hong Kong, Korea, New Zealand, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand in the Asia Pacific region.

“Microsoft is proud to announce that these new partners can transact today, and we’ll be working with them to scale their sales and marketing capabilities in the coming months. This phase of authorized resellers were selected because of their extensive knowledge, services and support they’re able to bring to the Surface family,” said Azizah Ali, Director of Small and Medium Solutions and Partners, Microsoft Malaysia, at a press conference announcing the appointment of these new commercial partners.

In addition to offering Microsoft’s extended warranty and accidental damage, these partners bring a variety of value-added services to the Surface family such as asset tagging, custom imaging, kitting, onsite service and support, device recycling, and data protection.

“The addition of these authorized resellers greatly expands the reach of the Microsoft devices-and-services strategy, extending the company’s family of devices enabled by cloud services to more organizations,” said Azizah. “This is very much in line with what we’ve been striving to do since the launch of Surface - to provide avenues for businesses to harness the power of Surface, and today, Malaysian businesses will have more commercial options in terms of purchasing Surface, allowing them to concentrate on what matters most – building their businesses.”

A growing demand by businesses for the right technology
One such example of how businesses are turning to Surface as well as other Microsoft devices and services to grow their business can be seen in JAC Photography, which specializes in events and portraitures. Chris Choong, entrepreneur and co-founder of JAC Photography & PhotoMe.my, was on hand at the event to explain how they adopted Microsoft’s devices and services – with the Surface RT at the epicenter – to give them a differentiating appeal to their customers and allow his company to focus on the details that matter.

“The advances in camera technology have given rise to a new generation of photographers who can more readily monetize their work. Today, many pick up a DSLR camera and start envisioning their own photography studio – which, of course, provides a challenge for traditional studios such as us. We needed to come up with a new and unique service proposition for customers that sets us apart from the competitors out there. What would benefit our customers, improve efficiency, and if possible, make us cool too? We found the perfect answer in Microsoft,” said Chris.

Chris then demonstrated how they leveraged a configuration of Surface RTs along with Windows 8 laptops and Microsoft’s free cloud storage service, SkyDrive, to create an entirely new enhanced event experience for their customers.  “It took us awhile to come up with the idea and to devise a configuration that enables it, but going with Microsoft has made it a worthwhile investment. For example, at a typical wedding banquet, our photographer will shoot photos of guests at registration during the pre-dinner reception.

With Wi-Fi connectivity, these photos are transferred to a Windows 8 laptop for quick editing and enhancement, and subsequently uploaded to SkyDrive. Then, a Surface RT will upload these photos when guests can tag themselves via social media tagging to be featured on the company’s Facebook page. The same photos will be simultaneously projected as a slideshow in the ballroom. Our customers and their guests think the concept of tagging themselves on a Surface RT as a very cool experience and it provides them an almost ‘live on the red carpet’ feel. We have had tremendous positive response to this new concept and, in fact, providing this feature as a service has opened up additional revenue streams for us,” Chris enthused.

Apart from satisfied customers and a growing reputation, a simplified workflow also means increased efficiency for the business. JAC Photography has seen as much as a 15% increase in efficiency that has led to higher productivity and a better return on investment. With less manual work needed to complete each transaction, JAC Photography is getting more done, with less. As a result, customer satisfaction is on the up.

“Now, imagine what it could do for other businesses and enterprises!” quipped Chris.

Azizah rejoined that this was exactly what businesses can expect to see when they leverage on Microsoft’s devices and services, saying, “Microsoft strongly believes that businesses should focus squarely on the success and growth of their business, while we help them achieve this through our technology. With Surface and other Windows devices, as well as services such as our cloud-based Office 365 and SkyDrive, businesses and enterprises can become truly revolutionary while focusing on driving efficiency, productivity and profitability. It’s a winning formula that we are delighted to help our customers discover through our commitment to transforming Malaysia together.”

“Chris’ example today underscores a growing demand by businesses for Surface and reaffirms our decision to appoint our six new commercial resellers to support this need. We look forward to working closely with our partners, both now and in the future, to better serve our commercial customers,” she concluded.

Malaysian consumers will still be able to purchase their Surface devices through the following authorized retailers: Challenger Technologies, Harvey Norman Malaysia, SNS Network and Thunder Match Technology, along with the newly appointed Aone Plus Supplies & Services, IT One Superstore, Machanics, MTCS Group, PC Image, SenQ and Viewnet Computer System. This now brings the total number of authorized consumer retailers in Malaysia to 11.

Are You Ready for The Holiday Online Shopping Bonanza?

Malaysia, 2 October 2013 – In recent years, October has joined the ranks of November and December as key months for consumers around the world to start their year-end festive shopping. This is no less the case in Malaysia, where more shoppers are actively scouring the online global marketplace and planning their gift buying earlier. Last year, PayPal’s Skip the Queues survey revealed that holiday shopping in Malaysia is starting as early as October.

Online holiday deals start now and consumers are still hungry to snap up the best offers available, but today they’re shopping from a global marketplace—not just at shopping malls. This is part of a much bigger trend: technology is fundamentally changing the retail calendar. Holiday shopping starts earlier and ends later.

The survey also revealed that Malaysians were expected to save almost 36 hours of their lives by doing nearly half of their holiday shopping online, avoiding their major pet peeves of mall shopping - trouble finding a parking lot (67%) and queuing at checkout lines (65%).

The Black Friday to Cyber Monday four-day period is one of the largest shopping long weekends in the U.S. where merchants offer massive discounts as the traditional start of the U.S. holiday shopping season.  Savvy Malaysian shoppers know that such sales are no longer exclusive to U.S. consumers and that they can now participate in super sales by their favourite brands, whether it’s Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Saks or promotions on eBay.

This is also an incredible opportunity for merchants in Malaysia who are selling internationally to tap into the festive shopping phenomenon being observed around the world. PayPal recently released a Modern Day Spice Routes report, which showed that 94 million consumers are shopping online beyond their borders, with the global cross border shopping opportunity projected to be worth more than $100 billion in the top 6 markets alone.

According to last year’s Skip the Queues survey, the five most popular shopping categories during this end year shopping bonanza period for Malaysians were clothing (46%), bags and accessories (43%), electronic gadgets (38%), shoes (35%), and fragrances (29%), The survey also showed that over 68% of Malaysian consumers would shop on their mobile devices over the festive shopping season. Thus, merchants have a huge opportunity to capitalise on these trends and meet consumer demands to drive local and international sales.

As the holiday season kicks into full gear in October, there are exciting times ahead for both consumers and merchants. Consumers who plan ahead to get in early will get to skip the queues, snag the best deals from retailers selling from around the world, and get their shopping delivered well ahead of the festivities. At the same time, merchants can get ahead of the global demand curve and capitalise on these trends by ensuring their sites are mobile-ready, their logistics and stocks are in order, and most importantly, that they have enabled a globally trusted, seamless and secure payments platform for the savvy global customer this festive season.

SEAGATE DELIVERS ON TECHNOLOGY MILESTONE: FIRST TO SHIP HARD DRIVES USING NEXT-GENERATION SHINGLED MAGNETIC RECORDING

Shingled Magnetic Technology is the First Step to Reaching a 20 Terabyte Hard Drive by 2020

MALAYSIA — October 2, 2013 —Seagate Technology plc, a world leader in storage solutions, today announced it has shipped over one million drives using shingled magnetic recording (SMR). SMR is the next generation in storage technology and is critical for continued improvement in areal density (the amount of data that can be stored on a single disk) to support global growth in cloud and mobile usage. The SMR generation of storage technology is expected to power gains of up to 25 percent.

“With nearly 7 billion inhabitants on earth we are creating  an astounding  2.7   Zettabytes of data a year and as such are rapidly approaching the physical limits of how much can be written on a single conventional  hard disk drive,” said Mark Re, Seagate’s chief technology officer. “With SMR technology, Seagate is on track to improve areal density by up to 25 percent or 1.25TB per disk, delivering hard drives with the lowest cost per gigabyte and reaching capacities of 5TB and beyond.”

The last technology transition, perpendicular recording, improved areal density by arranging the bits in a perpendicular fashion, thereby enabling narrower data tracks and read/write heads. Due to physical limitations read/write heads cannot become smaller. The most reliable option to improve areal density is to change the way data is written to the drive.

This is where SMR technology comes into play. A fundamental change to the architecture of the media, SMR technology rearranges the way data is stored on a disk by overlapping tracks— similar to shingles on a roof— thereby, increasing track density and improving aerial density. As a result of increased track density the amount of data on a single disk increases as does the overall storage capacity of a single drive.

“The HDD industry is experiencing Petabyte shipment growth rates greater than 30 percent per year while at the same time HDD areal density is improving at a rate less than 20 percent per year,” noted John Rydning, IDC’s research vice president, for hard disk drives. “Shingled magnetic recording technology is a solution that leverages existing drive architecture to help close the gap in these growth rates while at the same time providing a relatively simple yet economical path to higher capacity HDDs for many applications.”

Importantly, SMR can improve reliability by allowing Seagate to use fewer heads and disks to achieve new capacity points. SMR also provides a better value by increasing storage capacity while utilizing the same disk and heads as drive configurations shipping today thereby,  providing a more cost-effective approach to increasing aerial density.

AccessData Announces Interoperability with HP ArcSight to Deliver Accelerated Incident Response to Security Threats

SINGAPORE – (October 1, 2013) – AccessData Group, a leading provider of digital forensics, cyber-security, and e-discovery software, today announced a new solution that operates with the HP ArcSight platform and designed to deliver accelerated incident response to security threats. This new solution allows bi-directional communication between AccessData’s Cyber Intelligence & Response Technology (CIRT) platform with the HP ArcSight Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) platform.

“We know that HP is committed to continual innovation in cyber security, and this new solution enables our customers to stay ahead of new threats,” says Chad Gailey, vice president, Worldwide Channel Sales at AccessData.  “This solution has already demonstrated success out of the gate, with early sales to both a multi-national defense organization and a Fortune 100 consumer packaged goods company.”

The high level of interoperability between the CIRT platform and HP ArcSight SIEM answers the critical need for more streamlined and holistic incident response and faster response times in the face of advanced persistent threats, sophisticated hacking attacks, and constantly evolving malware.

CIRT extends the functionality of the HP ArcSight SIEM platform by providing three key functions. First, it delivers holistic rapid response by integrating the critical capabilities required for comprehensive root cause analysis – full packet capture network forensics, advanced computer forensics (hard drive, memory, and peripherals), malware triage, and enterprise-wide auditing for compromise assessment. Second, CIRT enables real-time collaboration among all security and response teams; and third, it provides automated batch remediation; so, organizations are able to eradicate threats, not just contain them.

The interoperability of CIRT and HP ArcSight SIEM is unprecedented because users are able to execute operations, view analysis, and launch remediation operations from within either platform interface – quickly and efficiently. The response operations can be customized and complex. Furthermore, unlike other solutions, the automated response is holistic. It is not only endpoint analysis or a combination of watered down network and endpoint forensics. It allows organizations to gather actionable intelligence very quickly and provides real remediation.

“To combat the growing number of cyber threats, organizations today must take a holistic approach to security,  one that provides broad visibility into vulnerabilities and real-time capabilities to stop threats in their tracks,” said Frank Mong, vice president and general manager, Solutions, Enterprise Security Products, HP. “We want to ensure our customers have seamless access to best-of-breed technology to address every stage of a potential cyber threat, and this new interoperability with AccessData is a flagship example of this program at work.”

CyberArk Unveils Master Policy; Revolutionary Approach to Privileged Account Security Turns Business Policy into Global Controls

New Policy Engine Sets Industry Standard for Securing Privileged Accounts to Improve Audit and Compliance, Control and Enforcement; Mitigates the Risk from Insider and Advanced Threats

Singapore. October 1, 2013 – CyberArk, the company securing the heart of the enterprise, today announced the availability of Master Policy, a bold new ‘policy engine’ that enables customers to set, manage and monitor privileged account security in a single, simple, native language interface. The once complex process of transforming business policy and procedures into technical settings is now easily manageable and understandable to an organization’s stakeholders, including security operations, risk officers and auditors. Master Policy is embedded at the core of all of CyberArk’s privileged account security products, providing simplified, unified and unequaled policy management. The release is available in version 8.0 of CyberArk’s privileged account security solution released today and will ship with all new installations of CyberArk’s Privileged Identity Management (PIM) and Privileged Session Management (PSM) suites.

Privileged accounts have been identified as the primary target in internal and advanced external attacks, and have been implicated in 100 percent of breaches*. As the risk of advanced threats increases, compliance regulations like PCI DSS, Sarbanes Oxley, NIST, NERC-CIP, HIPAA and others have become stricter. Master Policy enables organizations to set policy first to better meet their security and compliance needs.

Key benefits of Master Policy include:

•   A simplified process for creating and managing privileged account security policy, that can now be set up in minutes rather than days or weeks;

•   Improved security posture of the organization by approaching privileged account security with policy first;

•   Meets business demands by quickly and accurately translating written policy into privileged account security controls;

•   Enables organizations to meet and demonstrate compliance regulations like PCI DSS, Sarbanes Oxley, NIST, NERC-CIP and more;

•   Allows enterprise global policy to be set while providing controlled, granular level exceptions to meet the unique operational needs of the business;

•   Decreases resource strain by empowering security risk and audit teams to enforce policy in their native language.

“Policy is the foundation of a sound security infrastructure. It has been difficult to enforce written policy throughout the enterprise, as it is time-consuming and difficult to translate that written policy to technical settings for operational departments,” said Sally Hudson, Research Director, IDC. “With today’s advanced threat landscape, the enterprise can no longer afford to overlook the importance of accurate policy settings and enforcement. Simplifying this process gives control back to the security, risk and audit teams and allows them to use their expertise to mitigate the risks posed by insider and outsider threats and comply with strict regulations.”

In addition to Master Policy, CyberArk’s version 8.0 includes the Universal Connector, empowering organizations to extend privileged session monitoring to virtually any component of their IT infrastructure, including networks, servers, hypervisors, databases, applications and more.  Using customizable solutions, efficient automation and offering 200+ existing connectors, CyberArk is able to support nearly all current enterprise systems.

“With the introduction of the Master Policy engine, as well as the extended capabilities of the Universal Connector, CyberArk continues its leadership to remain at the forefront of security,” said Roy Adar, vice president of product management, CyberArk. “We are proud to be the only solution that ties together uncompromised core security with a deep understanding of policies and regulations. As privileged accounts continue to be exploited by cyber attackers and rogue insiders, it is our goal to put an end to this vulnerability by arming our customers with the strongest possible defense.”

Version 8.0 of CyberArk’s privileged account security solution, including the Privileged Identity Management and Privileged Session Management suites, is available today.

Lenovo Innovates, Collaborates and Accelerates PC+ Strategy

Lenovo to utilise Cloud Computing strategy as “consumerisation” of IT evolves the industry

KUALA LUMPUR – September 30, 2013: Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) Malaysia will continue to explore new ways of furthering the cloud computing agenda as a key driver in empowering businesses. As the industry continues to evolve, there is greater uptake in the “consumerisation” of IT, as well as the ‘bring your own devices’ (BYOD) trend. The strategy was reiterated at a recent roundtable between Khoo Hung Chuan, Country General Manager, Lenovo Malaysia, Vishal Tripathi, Principal Analyst, Gartner and Deepak Setty, Director, Technology Solution Group, Microsoft Malaysia where key business partners were in attendance at Seri Carcosa Negara.

In recent times, the rise of the PC+ end user and the classic-but-more-difficult priorities of IT have turned the environment into a battlefield.  Lenovo has recognized that it would take a new approach in its products to shift this balance to the middle and to deliver devices that are not only accepted by IT but could also be embraced by end users.

“BYOD and “consumerisation” have played a large part in the development of our PC+ Strategy, where the PC industry is defined as much by the expectations of the end users as the hardware itself. Those expectations are creating tremendous pressure for IT, especially in the area of corporate PC’s,” said Khoo Hung Chuan, Country General Manager, Lenovo Malaysia.

According to Gartner, cloud computing is set to have a considerable impact on business in the future as 80 percent of organizations say that they intend to use cloud services in some form within the next 12 months.

Khoo added, “Lenovo intends in continuing to drive not only growth but also innovation in PCs, and also expand the business across the four screens - PC, tablet, smartphone and Smart TV including the ecosystem of cloud services and other applications that make up the PC+ market. The Cloud is also a key element of PC+. Having a smart cloud that is device-aware and enabled for security is a key element of the strategy, as well as other software partners in critical areas like manageability and security.”

Lenovo continues to align its core values and behaviours with its business partners through its various target market segmentations in order to succeed further. Lenovo’s climb to the number one spot as world’s largest PC maker according to Gartner and as reported by IDC, with faster growth than the major PC makers as well as attaining 16.7% of the global PC market share in 2Q 2013, only serves as proof of Lenovo’s success.

Cloudmark Enters the Malaysian market

Cloudmark Security Platform™ delivers protection against messaging abuse

Kuala Lumpur, 30 September, 2013 - Cloudmark, Inc., the global leader in messaging threat protection for communication service providers, has revealed they are entering the Malaysian market to provide messaging security solutions for the country’s carrier market. Malaysia is the final country among three other Southeast Asian countries, which are the Philippines, Singapore and Indonesia, where Cloudmark establishes its network.

The rate at which consumers receive and send emails and text messages is increasing every minute, providing spammers an opportunity to take advantage of the mobile/internet network. Research compiled from Cloudmark’s global threat database reveals that 62% of all emails sent from Malaysia were flagged as spam this year alone, with the majority going to the US, Australia, Japan, Great Britain, and Italy. This is compared with only 6.8% of emails flagged as spam in Australia. This places Malaysia as the 51st ranking country in the world for all email spam sent.

Cloudmark’s global threat database also revealed the increasing prevalence of SMS spam in Asia Pacific. Cloudmark estimates that there are around 150 million SMS spam messages sent across Malaysia monthly.

Additionally, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has issued multiple warnings to the mobile providers to improve quality of service for both dropped calls and SMS spam due to large consumer losses to scammers. The MCMC’s active assessment of the mobile market reflects the customers and regulators’ unhappiness with mobile QoS in Malaysia.

The use of Cloudmark’s technology will help identify fraudulent activity and identify grey route traffic, helping carriers maximize revenue and increase customer satisfaction by preventing the onslaught of unwanted and potentially harmful messages on personal devices. With the rapid growth of mobile messaging in Malaysia there is a greater need to ensure that checks and systems are in place to create a secure environment and a clean network.

Chief Technology Officer for Cloudmark, Neil Cook has expressed his excitement working in the region, and hopes to provide a safer messaging environment for the Malaysian subscribers.

“We are delighted to enter the Malaysian market and are committed to providing the best technology available for the benefit of our customers. There is an increased expectation from service providers to ensure a spam free network and provide customers with real time solutions against messaging threats.”

Cloudmark’s General Manager for APAC, David Somerville, says Cloudmark recognizes the need to continue developing and expanding in the region due to population growth and the development of Asia Pacific as a technological hub.

“We are currently working with a number of tier one operators in APAC and continuing our committed expansion to the region.”

The 2012 Messaging Threat Report conducted by Cloudmark revealed that there were more than 350,000 unique unsolicited mobile spam variants in 2012, with the highest rate in December. It has also been noted that spammers have favorite category of attacks and frequently changing their messaging methods to avoid being detected. 2013: WIN32/Downadup (aka Conficker) Most Detected Threat in Malaysia

F-Secure’s latest Threat Report highlights latest trends and new developments in malware threats

Kuala Lumpur, 30 September 2013 – The prevalence of pirated versions of Windows XP and legacy systems that prevent operating systems (OS) upgrades has led to a continued rise of the computer worm:WIN32/Downadup threats affecting old platforms, especially unpatched Windows XP systems. According to F-Secure’s latest Threat Report H1 2013 which was published recently, more than 20,000 attacks related to the Downadup worm were detected in Malaysia between January to September 2013.

The report also found that mobile malware is becoming increasingly widespread among Malaysian mobile users, owing to the growing popularity of Android platforms. The number of Android malware has doubled each year since 2011, and about 77% of the new mobile malware is profit-motivated.

Most Detected Threat: WORM:WIN32/Downadup

The continued increase of threats from WORM:WIN32/Downadup, also known as Conficker, in Malaysia points to two possibilities, according to F-Secure Malaysia Security Advisor, Goh Su Sim.

“This five-year-old virus, which spreads through the Windows system, is still prevalent today and affects older platforms, especially Windows XP systems that are unpatched,” said Goh. “This means two things: One, pirated versions of Windows XP are widely available in Malaysia. Of course, when you use non-original versions, you most likely cannot connect to the latest updates to update your system and this can result in your system being vulnerable to attacks. Two, there are a lot of Legacy applications running, for example in banks, which prevent OS upgrades.” He added that the top 10 most infected cities in Malaysia are Kajang, Kuala Lumpur and Batu Caves.

While the worm is known to wreak havoc on the OS, Goh stressed that the solution was relatively simple, and that is to patch systems to avoid potential disasters.

“Microsoft issued a patch for the threat in 2008 when they detected the vulnerability in their software. Unfortunately, a lot of IT administrators and personnel here are not doing enough patching to keep their servers or systems up to date. Hackers are quick to take advantage of these loopholes. It’s like having a door with a lock that doesn’t work, and you know it’s not been working for the past five years, but you haven’t done anything to fix it.”

In addition to updating the patches, another recommendation according to Goh, is to minimize the attack surface. For example, because of the high vulnerability of Java plug-ins, users are recommended to disable or uninstall Java if we do not use it, as not all programs require Java to run.

Growing Threat: Mobile Malware

Hackers are starting to turn their focus to mobile devices as there is now money to be made hacking smartphones as well. According to F-Secure’s Threat Report, the number of Android malware has been doubling year on year since 2011, and doubled further in H1 2013 from the previous year.

“This reflects the speed of which people have started adopting Android platforms and in tandem, how fast viruses are being written for them. It’s not so much about which platform is safer, rather, because more than 70% of the market is now made up of Android users, hackers tend to focus on the larger share of the pie,” explained Goh.

358 new families and variants of Android malware were discovered by F-Secure Labs in H1 2013, nearly doubling the total number of malware the Labs has ever discovered, to 793. Symbian followed with 16 new families and variants discovered, while no new families or variants were discovered on other mobile platforms.

Goh added that most, about 77%, of the new malware for smartphones has been found to be profit-motivated. “Malaysian mobile users are hit by potentially unwanted applications such as adware and money-stealing viruses known as premium SMS malware. Your smartphone today contains more information than your PC – it knows your lifestyle and habits, and marketing companies love this information. There are viruses that track all your information and sell it to marketing companies,” he said.

APT Threats and Mac Malware

Mac OS platforms are no longer strangers to malware. In the first six months of 2013, there have been 33 new families or variants of malware detected on Mac OS platforms. This is largely due to the growing popularity of Mac OS in the market and also the over-confidence of users that Macs are immune to viruses. About 57.6% of Mac malware are Backdoors, while 36.4% are Trojans.

APT threats have also become a major talked-about threat to the data security of organisations and industries and now F-Secure Labs has constructed a rough overall picture of the kind of victims APT attackers are targeting. For details on that study plus the latest in Mac malware, phishing, and more, refer to the complete Threat Report H1 2013 .

Fortinet Secures NEC Cloud Platform

FortiGate Next-Generation Firewalls to be Front Line of Defense for NEC’s MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation Software

MALAYSIA, September 30, 2013 – Fortinet - a world leader in high-performance network security - today announced its FortiGate network security platform has been selected by NEC as the next generation firewall for its MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation cloud platform software. The NEC software, announced in May, supports automatic configuration, deployment and operation of cloud (Infrastructure as a Service) environments within enterprise and service provider data centers. While the platform is initially geared for the Japanese market, NEC plans to expand sales to additional markets, including North America, Europe and Asia.

The MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation software is the first cloud platform software to utilize software-defined networking (SDN), which automates cloud operations through OpenFlow, the communications protocol that gives access to the forwarding plane of a network switch or router over the network. The software is linked to the company’s Programmable Flow Controller PF6800 and enables centralized control of virtual servers and virtual networks. NEC’s cloud platform makes it possible to automate operations for changing network settings arising from virtual server retrieval requests from users, a process that has up until now been time consuming for server administrators.

Fortinet’s FortiGate network security platform is the first third-party next-generation firewall to be certified by NEC to protect its cloud platform. Since 2010, NEC and Fortinet have worked together to deploy the FortiGate platform as the security resource in the SDN environments NEC has built. Today, the integration of FortiGate in MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation represents another step in enhancing the security of SDN environments in the cloud.

“We are pleased to be extending our relationship with Fortinet to our new secured cloud platform. The customer feedback to date has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Akinori Itou, general manager, System Software Division, NEC. “By combining our strength in cloud platform development with Fortinet’s strength in network security innovation, we believe we are perfectly positioned to offer our customers a secure software defined cloud platform that offers high levels of reliability, usability and simplified operability.”

“Software defined networking is more than a buzzword. It’s a reality. But the question on minds today is how to secure them,” said Norio Kubota, country manager for Fortinet Japan. “We believe we’ve found an answer with our collaboration with NEC. With their MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation software, we are able to automatically route all of a customer’s internal and perimeter traffic through our next-generation firewalls, which greatly improves the customer’s security posture while reducing provisioning time and costs for operators.”

The FortiGate Advantage
To protect the company’s MasterScope Virtual DataCenter Automation cloud platform software, NEC’s specifically chose Fortinet’s FortiGate-3000 series and FortiGate-1000 series next generation firewalls (NGFW). These network security appliances provide exceptional throughput, ultra-low latency and a wide range of configuration options for next generation environments that have requirements for lightning fast transactions, such as financial services, Voice over IP (VoIP), BYOD/Mobile and Web 2.0 applications. The broad network security capabilities of these appliances address several critical market dynamics:

·           Soaring bandwidth demands due to the increasing use of content-rich social media and Web 2.0 applications
·           The explosion of mobile devices accessing these applications -- increasingly through Wi-Fi connections -- that require an application firewall with the ability to process millions of connections per second
·           More frequent and increasingly sophisticated attacks employing the latest detection evasion techniques being launched from the application layer

The FortiGate product family combines firewall, application control, IP Sec and SSL VPN, intrusion prevention, on-device and cloud-based sandboxing, antimalware and Web filtering into a single device with all features turned on for a single price. All FortiGate devices provide native dual-stack support for IPv6 traffic out of the box as Fortinet has been a leader in protecting IPv6 networks since 2007, achieving both IPv6-Ready and JITC certifications in 2008.

All FortiGates integrate the purpose-built FortiOS operating system with custom FortiASIC processors and the latest-generation CPUs to provide broad, high-performance security.
