Maxis Berhad and Alcatel-Lucent unlock Malaysian e-book market by focusing on local language content and wide accessibility

KUALA LUMPUR, May 31, 2012 – With the help of Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext and NYSE: ALU), Maxis Berhad - Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider - has launched the country’s first integrated e-book service. In full support of the Malaysian government’s knowledge society program, Maxis Berhad will provide access to an extensive digital library with content in the various (local) languages, and accessible via a wide range of devices.

According to Juniper Research, worldwide mobile e-book sales will represent a market opportunity of $9.7 billion by 2016 (growing from $3.2 billion in 2011). At the same time, however, non-English speaking markets are underserved by the traditional players in this space: many e-readers are only available in a few countries and finding content in local languages typically is a challenge. Malaysia is a “textbook example” of this: a relatively small, multi-ethnic and multicultural society where many different languages are spoken.

Backing the government’s project to continue to develop Malaysia as a leading knowledge society, Maxis Berhad has engaged with Alcatel-Lucent to launch an extensive library of e-books – novels as well as scientific publications – that can easily be accessed via a wide range of devices including tablets, dedicated e-readers and PCs. Currently, the library includes approximately 300,000 international and local books. The total number is growing weekly.

The service runs on Alcatel-Lucent’s cloud-based Digital Media Store (DMS), enabling Maxis Berhad to launch their e-book offering quickly and with limited upfront capital investment. DMS also allows Maxis Berhad to provide recommendations in line with customers’ preferences - bringing consumer engagement to the next level.

T. Kugan, Maxis’ Vice President and Head of Product, Device, Innovation & Roaming: “Maxis has recognized the shift towards digital content and with the launch of Maxis e-books, we are looking at providing Malaysian readers with the hassle-free experience of browsing, purchasing and reading their favourite local and international books on their tablets or PCs. This will also provide local publishers, authors and educational institutions with a formidable platform that makes it possible for them to reach a larger audience.”

Mohd Fazlin Shah Mohd Salleh, President and Managing Director Alcatel-Lucent Malaysia: “This initiative underscores Maxis’ commitment to help Malaysia transform into a true knowledge society. Leveraging Alcatel-Lucent’s Digital Media Store solution, Maxis can deliver a variety of books - including novels and bestsellers, but also educational material - to subscribers across Malaysia.”

Ingram Micro to Distribute Silver Peak WAN Optimization throughout Asia Pacific

Leading IT Distributor to Support Growing Demand for Virtual and Data Center WAN Optimization Products in Key Asia Pacific Markets

Singapore. May 31, 2012 – Silver Peak Systems and Ingram Micro Inc. (NYSE: IM) today announced distribution agreements across Asia Pacific (APAC) that include offering Silver Peak’s leading data center class wide area network (WAN) optimization products to resellers and customers in Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, New Zealand, Pacific Islands, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.

“With increased adoption of virtualized Infrastructures and more centralized, cloud-based applications, there is a good growth opportunity for Silver Peak data center class WAN optimization,” said Shailendra Gupta, senior EVP and president, Asia Pacific for Ingram Micro. “Silver Peak’s advanced solutions and keen desire to work with the channel provide a good complement to our portfolio. We are hopeful that this alignment will bring value to our customers throughout the region.”

Silver Peak virtual and physical appliances provide the highest-capacity and most comprehensive options for deploying WAN optimization anywhere—from data centers, to branch offices, and to the cloud. Silver Peak’s Virtual Acceleration Open Architecture (VXOA) also aligns well with Ingram Micro’s virtual infrastructure offerings from companies such as VMware (vSphere), Citrix (XenServer), Microsoft (Hyper-V), and KVM. This enables enterprises throughout Asia Pacific to accelerate and optimize IT initiatives while reducing WAN infrastructure costs, including added costs for multiprotocol label switching (MPLS), Internet virtual private networking (VPN) and satellite WANs common to the region.

“APAC is a critical region for WAN optimization because of highly distributed IT environments and the inherent lower-quality WANs,” said Arturo Cazares, senior vice president of worldwide sales for Silver Peak. “By teaming with Ingram Micro and our reseller partners throughout the region, we will help customers cost-effectively maximize their WAN resources and accelerate the adoption of business-critical applications between data centers, branch offices, and the cloud.”

As part of the new value-added distribution relationship, Ingram Micro and Silver Peak are co-investing in dedicated technical support staff, market development, and cross-trained sales engineers.

Eyefinity made simple with SAPPHIRE HD 7950 FleX

Direct support for 3 DVI monitors in Eyefinity mode now on 7K series

SAPPHIRE Technology has just announced the SAPPHIRE HD 7950 Flex Edition brining the company’s unique solution for multi-screen gaming to the highly acclaimed HD 7000 series of graphics cards based on the Graphics Core Next architecture from AMD.

Most graphics cards based on AMD technology require the third monitor in an Eyefinity set-up to be a DisplayPort monitor, or connected with an active DisplayPort Adapter. The SAPPHIRE FleX family can support three DVI monitors in Eyefinity mode and deliver a true SLS (Single Large Surface) work area without the need for active adapters. The first two monitors are connected to the two DVI ports and the third to an HDMI to DVI cable (supplied) with no extra hardware required. The SAPPHIRE HD 7950 FleX is now the highest performing card with this feature, allowing gamers to use low-cost DVI monitors for all three screens. Additional monitors can be added to the setup, but must be DisplayPort connected. With its core clock speeds of 860MHz and 1250Mhz (5 Gb/sec effective) for the memory this model is slightly faster than the HD 7950 standard edition and brings easy to configure multi-screen enjoyment to even hard-core gamers.

For enthusiasts wishing to maximise performance, a new version of the SAPPHIRE overclocking tool, TriXX supporting this latest generation of technology is available free to download from the SAPPHIRE website. TriXX allows tuning of GPU voltage as well as core and memory clocks, whilst continuously displaying temperature. Manual control of fan speed is supported, as well as user created fan profiles and the ability to save up to four different performance settings. The HD 7000 series is the third generation of DirectX 11 compatible solutions from the graphics division of AMD - formerly ATI. The SAPPHIRE HD 7950 is ready for DirectX 11.1 and the new Windows 8 operating system as well as delivering all the features of the current DirectX 11 such as DirectCompute11 and multi threaded communications with the CPU. Communication with the host PC is optimised with the implementation of the latest high speed PCI-Express Gen3.0 interface, and multiple cards can be used to further enhance performance in CrossFireX mode on a suitably specified mainboard.

HDMI specifications have also increased in the HD 7000 series. Fast HDMI 1.4a supports Stereoscopic 3D with enhanced frame rates of 60Hz per eye - 120Hz total. It is also ready for the next generation of 4K displays that can be driven from a single high speed input of 3GHz HDMI 1.4a or DisplayPort 1.2 HBR2.

APP Acceleration is the name given to the enhanced performance of a wide range of applications using the stream processing capabilities and specific hardware features of the graphics architecture. The HD 7000 series has been optimised for this type of task. Typical applications include Video encoding and decoding, compression and multiplexing for media distribution, gaming or video conferencing. APP acceleration can also enhance everyday tasks such as Internet browsing, Office applications and file compression with supported software suites.

The CEO of Multimedia Development Corporation, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali and Dato’ Mohamed Sharil Tarmizi, Chairman of MCMC, opened the expo accompanied by T. Kugan, Vice President Maxis and senior representatives from the Ministries and Strategic Partners of GoMobile.

The GoMobile Expo, for the first time, saw half the expo setting taken up by AppCity, a zone dedicated to mobile apps. AppCity was powered by the MSC ICON2 developer programme and supported by MCMC and Maxis.

AppCity was the largest ever platform for local mobile developers to showcase their apps to Malaysians. More than a hundred locally developed mobile applications were showcased at GoMobile 2012. The developers were especially pleased to be able to introduce their apps to the Malaysian public. Tai Aik Keong, a mobile developer said on a Facebook post, “"Thanks everyone for making GoMobile 2012 a success! I have met a lot of good friends, entrepreneurs, developers and marketing experts. Masatu has received great response and feedback. Looking forward for GoMobile 2013."

The organisers were also delighted to welcome some international developers to showcase at AppCity, with representation from Philippines, Thailand, Korea, Pakistan and India.
Many other companies and organisations came together to put on an exciting event. Visitors could grab bargains at one of the many exciting booths selling mobile gear, check out local mobile apps, learn about the world of app development at the AppCity workshops or just have fun at the many experiential exhibits and activities.

GoMobile 2012 received wide recognition and support from the government and private sectors. The Multimedia Development Corporation (MDeC) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (SKMM) provided vital support as Strategic Partners, alongside Maxis.
Kashminder Singh said that the organisers would continue their efforts to grow GoMobile into an international show that focussed on mobile apps and services. “GoMobile is an event the Malaysian mobile industry can truly call its own,” said Kashminder Singh, adding, “We look forward to putting up an even more spectacular show next year. Our vision is to make GoMobile the hub of this region’s mobile apps industry.”
