PCs Running Microsoft Genuine Products Save Users 50% in Time

PCs running genuine software are on average 50% faster to boot, print, open documents and surf the Internet while significantly extending the battery life.

Kuala Lumpur – November 18, 2011 - The Harrison Group, a leading global market research agency today announced the results of a global study that compared the effects of using genuine and pirated Microsoft products that covered the different versions of Windows XP, Windows 7, Office 2003 and Office 2007 obtained through the most popular channels of pirated software distribution, such as peer-to-peer file sharing, independent hardware dealers and street market stalls.

The study clearly demonstrated that PCs running genuine software were on average 50% faster to boot, print, open documents and surf the Internet while significantly extending the battery life, specifically:

· PCs running genuine Windows and MS-Office products outperformed their pirated counterparts 75% of the time by an average of 52% when opening documents.

· Genuine machines were faster than their pirated counterparts in half (48%) of the test configurations by an average of 56% to print 1MB of Word documents.

· 67% of the time the genuine Microsoft products were an average of 100% faster.

· PCs running genuine Windows were 46% faster 59% of the time when loading popular Internet web pages heavy with text and graphics.

· Genuine Windows machines outperformed pirated operating systems 60% of the time by an average of 20% in terms of power conservation when running processor-intensive programs for an hour.



As a result, the genuine Microsoft product users truly get a superior performance and the time saved from the reduction in wait time for all of these common tasks adds up to a more dynamic, productive and satisfying experience.

The conclusions of the Harrison Group’s study are that, counterfeit users pay a high cost for the low price of counterfeit software, by opening themselves to catastrophic security breaches and significant losses in productivity and performance, regardless of the platform they use, and regardless of whether the counterfeit software’s source is the web, a street market stall, or an unprincipled hardware retailer.

“To protect the users we would like to remind everyone that Genuine Microsoft software requires activation and validation at installation. If you are not required to enter a genuine Microsoft product key at installation, chances are, you are installing counterfeit software, so insist on Genuine”, said Sunny Ooi, Consumer Channels Group Director, Microsoft Malaysia.
Many users may believe that the risks associated with using counterfeit software are isolated to programs acquired from the web, but the study demonstrates that, users obtain problematic counterfeit software through a number of channels, including from hardware retailers that pre-install it on the machines that they sell, or from purchases made at unauthorized retailers, street markets or through online auctions or suppliers.

“Piracy is not only contained to the software industry nor causing losses only to large multinational companies. Creative industries that typically rely on copyright contribute between 2-6% of the GDP and 3-11% of country’s jobs”, elaborated Ooi. “With MY Creative Content” under the ETP initiative, Malaysia targets to achieve a Gross National Income (GNI) of US$ 1 billion by 2020, create 10,300 jobs, and secure an export of 45% of its GNI targets, from the creative content and applications business”.

“With the current piracy race as reported by BSA, these innovative and creative companies could stand to lose half of their total available revenues, causing a down spiraling effect on the high-wage jobs available, further innovation and new creative content and the FDI. Playing fair begins when people and businesses take a stand and demand legal software”, he concluded.
According to IDC, US$142 billion in new economic growth, 500,000 more jobs, and US$32 billion in additional taxes could be generated world-wide if software counterfeiting and piracy alone could be reduced over the next 4 years by 10-percentage points.

Hopetech-SAP Centre of Excellence Will Help Bumiputera SMEs Earn RM300 Million Over 5 Years

Hopetech and SAP will collaborate to provide industry knowledge and technical resources to Bumiputera SMEs in the transportation and logistics industries

Kuala Lumpur – 17th November, 2011 – Hopetech Sdn. Bhd. and SAP Malaysia Sdn. Bhd. signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) today that announced their commitment to collaborate in establishing the Hopetech-SAP Centre of Excellence (COE). The COE will be housed at Hopetech’s research and development facility in Kuala Lumpur and is expected to be in full operation by 1st Quarter 2012. This initiative is made possible with the facilitation and support from MDeC and Teraju.

The Hopetech-SAP COE will provide Bumiputra SMEs in the transportation and logistics industries with information about and training in global best practices and also assist them with technical resources to compete more effectively in both the Malaysian and South East Asian markets. Hopetech and SAP expect to train more than 300 professionals at the COE over the next 3 to 5 years. The knowledge, skills and expertise that these professionals will gain is projected to help Bumiputera SMEs in the transportation industry to earn over RM300 million in additional revenues by 2017.

“This collaboration will provide a platform allowing SAP, Hopetech and MDeC to work closely with Bumiputera SMEs in the transportation and logistics industry and get them involved in the early research initiatives developing software solutions for transportation and urban management,” said Serene Sia, Managing Director, SAP Malaysia.

“The participation of Bumiputera SMEs will allow us to do research in real world settings and develop a foundation of highly skilled, local talent to draw upon. The first stage of the Hopetech-SAP COE collaboration will see SAP upskill and train 20 engineers from Hopetech in SAP’s industry leading, transportation software solutions within the first half of 2012.

Hopetech will then take the lead in developing an R&D strategy aimed at implementing state of the art revenue collection, ticketing and electronic payment solutions for the transportation industry through enhancing existing and developing new and innovative products and solutions.

“Hopetech’s business presence in Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, Philippines and India will be greatly enhanced with this collaboration with SAP as it will not only equip our staff with the relevant skill sets but would also expose us to global best practices. MDeC and Teraju will support and facilitate the Hopetech-SAP COE by identifying and coordinating suitable Bumiputera SMEs for participation in the COE’s various programmes. In the second half of 2012, MDeC and Teraju will invite government agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs) that are related to the transportation industry such as the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD), Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM), Prasarana, and Malaysia Railway (KTM) among others to participate in the COE’s programs.

Once these organisations have completed their training at the Hopetech-SAP COE Bumiputera SMEs will be invited to participate in the COE. Initial candidates are expected to come from subsidiaries and affiliates of the first intake of government agencies and GLCs. MDeC will also invite and encourage more than 2,000 MSC Malaysia Status companies to participate in the Hopetech-SAP COE.

Hopetech is a home-grown IT company that has delivered projects for the past 12 years within the region and South Asia particularly in transportation industry. It has been providing electronic payment and settlement solutions for toll, rail, parking and bus operators as well as banks for its e-purse back office system.

SAP is a market leader in enterprise application software. SAP will provide 3 internships at SAP Research in Singapore and in Australia for students graduating from the Hopetech-SAP COE. SAP will also extend research programs at the two SAP Research facilities and provide access to SAP Labs to qualified Malaysian Bumiputra SMEs.

SAP and Hopetech will also work together with universities and other agencies to jointly sponsor the Young ICT Explorers competition in Malaysia. Gartner Says Asia Pacific Enterprise IT Spending to Reach US$367 Billion in 2012

Kuala Lumpur, 17 November, 2011 — Spending on information technology (IT) products and services by enterprises in Asia Pacific is expected to grow 8 percent to exceed US$367 billion ($A345.7 billion) in 2012. In Malaysia, enterprise IT spending is forecast to reach MYR 31.5 billion in 2012, up 6.1% over 2011. Singapore, Korea and Hong Kong are forecasted to each reach S$18.3 billion in 2012, up 4.1% over, KRW 49.7 trillion in 2012, up 3.1% over 2011 and HK$90 billion in 2012, up 5.5% over 2011

However, the bulk of this growth comes from developing markets like China and India, as businesses in mature markets are increasingly cautious.

Peter Sondergaard, senior vice president and global head of research at Gartner, provided the company’s latest outlook for the IT industry today to an audience of 1,500 CIOs and IT leaders at Gartner Symposium/ITxpo at the Gold Coast Convention Centre.

“Our outlook is made with the assumption of continued global economic uncertainty, and at best, sluggish growth - especially in the United States, Japan, and Western Europe,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “The European financial crisis is extremely serious. Some well-respected economists now predict a shrinking Eurozone economy in 2012.

Worldwide enterprise IT spending is projected to total US$2.7 trillion in 2012, a 3.9 percent increase from 2011 spending of US$2.6 trillion, according to Gartner, Inc.

While growth is slowing (from the expected 5.9 percent increase in 2011), analysts said it’s important to note that despite global economic challenges, enterprises will continue to invest in IT.

“The days when IT was the passive observer of the world are over. Global politics and the global economy are being shaped by IT,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “IT is a primary driver of business growth. For example, this year 350 companies will each invest more than $1 billion in IT. They are doing this because IT impacts their business performance.”

Mr. Sondergaard said two-thirds of CEOs believe IT will make a greater contribution to their industry in the next 10 years than any prior decades.

“For the IT leader to thrive in this environment, IT leaders must lead from the front and re-imagine IT,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “IT leaders must embrace the post-modern business, a business driven by customer relationships, fueled by the explosion in information, collaboration and mobility.”

This new era brings with it urgent and compelling forces, Mr. Sondergaard said. They include mobility, the cloud, social, and an explosion in information.

“These forces are innovative and disruptive just taken on their own, but brought together, they are revolutionising business and society,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “This nexus defines the next age of computing. To understand this change, you must appreciate each of the forces.”

Mobile.
The shift to mobile is almost overtaking many IT organisations that can’t move fast enough to catch up. Mobile is not a coming trend. It has already happened. In 2010, the installed base of mobile PCs and smartphones exceeded that of desktop PCs.

Less than 20 million media tablets, such as the iPad, were sold in 2010, but by 2016, 900 million media tablets will be purchased – one for every eight people on earth. By 2014, the installed base of devices based on lightweight mobile operating systems, such as Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, and Microsoft’s Windows 8 will exceed the total installed base of all PC-based systems.

“That’s incredible change, not only for individuals. It requires IT to re-imagine the way it provides applications,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “By 2014, private app stores will be deployed by 60 percent of IT organisations. The applications themselves will be redesigned – they will become context-enabled, understanding the user’s intent automatically. Mobile computing is not just the desktop on a handheld device. The future of mobile computing is context-aware computing.”

Cloud.
The cloud combines the industrialisation of IT capabilities and the disruptive impact of new IT-led business models. However, the shift away from traditional IT acquisition models to public cloud services is still in the very early stages. For example, Gartner estimates that while US$74 billion was spent on public cloud services in 2010, that only represented 3 percent of enterprise spending. However, public cloud services will grow five times faster than overall IT enterprise spending (19 percent annually through 2015).

“What supply chain models did to manufacturing is what cloud computing is doing to in-house data centres. It is allowing people to optimize around where they have differentiated capabilities,” Mr. Sondergaard said.

Social.
The next stage of social computing is about mass-customer, mass-citizen, and mass-employee involvement with enterprise systems.

“With 1.2 billion people on social networks, 20 percent of the world’s population, social computing is in its next phase,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “IT leaders must immediately incorporate social software capabilities throughout their enterprise systems.”

Information.
The concept of one enterprise data warehouse containing all information needed for decisions is dead. Multiple systems, including content management, data warehouses, data marts and specialized file systems tied together with data services and metadata, will become the “logical” enterprise data warehouse.

“Information is the oil of the 21st century, and analytics is the combustion engine,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “Pursuing this strategically will create an unprecedented amount of information of enormous variety and complexity. This is leading to a change in data management strategies known as big data. Organisations need what we call a Pattern-Based Strategy, an architecture that seeks signals, models them for their impact, and then adapt to the business process of the organisation.

“The combined impact of these forces will make architectures of the last 20 years obsolete,” Mr. Sondergaard said. “Together, they force the issue – they drive us to create the post-modern business, drive simplicity and force creative destruction.”

Maxis Berhad (Maxis), Malaysia’s leading integrated communications service provider, continued to strengthen its service offerings on the home front following a strategic alliance agreement signed between Maxis Broadband Sdn Bhd and BU One Management Co. Sdn Bhd (BU One), a subsidiary of Bandar Utama Development Sdn Bhd (Bandar Utama Development). Under the terms of the agreement, Maxis will provide Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) solutions for the residents of 9 Bukit Utama Condominium in Bandar Utama, Selangor, a luxury property managed by BU One. This alliance is yet another move by Maxis to expand its fibre penetration in the Bandar Utama areas.

Through this partnership, Maxis is able to provide full end-to-end fibre connection to each individual unit in all three blocks of the condominium. Residents who sign up for any of Maxis’ fibre internet packages will be able to enjoy seamless experience with this “future proof” service, which is ready to provide enriched contents through services such as internet protocol television (IPTV), without any network capability limitations.

Commenting on the signing of this agreement, Harold Quek, Maxis’ Senior Vice President of Home Services, mentioned, “Maxis is excited to be BU One’s preferred service provider of fibre internet service to their 9 Bukit Utama Condominium. By providing Maxis Home fibre internet to the residents of this premium property, they will be able to enjoy an enhanced communications experience that encompasses Maxis’ full suite of exciting and interactive services which include voice, high-speed internet, value added services and content, which can be experienced through multiple screens.”

“The signing of this agreement comes on the heels of the recent launch of Maxis’ ‘Home’ campaign, which is aimed to create public awareness that Maxis Home is now available for their homes, enabling an enriched digital lifestyle. Maxis launched its Home services in March 2011, making it Malaysia’s first multiple-play service provider offering rich content over multiple screens.
