HP Introduces Intelligent Security Solutions to Drive Innovation, Reduce Risk

Proactive security measures enable organizations to leverage big data, cloud, mobility

KUALA LUMPUR, 14 September 2012 — HP today announced additions to its security solutions portfolio that enable enterprises to assess, transform, optimize and manage their security environments to proactively protect what matters.

Cloud, mobility and big data initiatives are helping organizations solve pressing challenges, while driving accelerated innovation, enhanced agility and improved financial management. However, these initiatives also can introduce big security concerns.

Wong Loke Yeow & Richard Archdeacon , HP

According to new research conducted on behalf of HP, concerns around understanding security requirements for cloud services are top of mind for more than two-thirds of business and technology executives in Asia Pacific and Japan.  More than three quarters of those surveyed also indicated they are concerned about how to secure and consume big data. (1)

Almost two-thirds of those surveyed are concerned about mobile data loss or theft. In addition, more than half of respondents admitted that their organizations spend more time and money on reactive measures than on proactive risk management.

A reactive, perimeter-based approach to security is no longer sufficient. Enterprises need proactive, intelligent security solutions that span traditional and hybrid delivery models, and address the challenges brought on by these new shifts in IT.

“Cybersecurity threats are growing exponentially, and without a proactive information risk management strategy, enterprise growth, innovation and efficiencies are hindered,” said Wong Loke Yeow, Regional Marketing Director, Enterprise Security Products, Hewlett-Packard Asia Pacific and Japan.

“HP helps clients protect what matters most to their organizations by delivering intelligent security solutions that prioritize security resources to help identify threats earlier and enable a faster response time,” said Richard Archdeacon, CTO, Strategy and Technology, Enterprise Security Services, Hewlett-Packard Company.

Intelligent security for the public sector
For public sector organizations, security threats are continuing to escalate, regulations are becoming more complex and budgets are shrinking. HP Security for Public Sector reflects the breadth and depth of HP’s security services capabilities to meet the exacting standards of these organizations worldwide.
New additions to this portfolio include:
New features added to HP Assured Identity, a solution that offers simplified identity, credential and access management. It enables tighter controls against insider threats, robust identity proofing and reduced complexity around secure information sharing between collaborating organizations.
Comprehensive Applications Threat Analysis (CATA) on Demand lowers the cost of application security by addressing threats throughout the development life cycle.
HP Security Operations Center (SOC) Consulting Services, designed for public sector clients outside the United States, enable clients to establish an on-site intelligent cybersecurity operations center. Clients also can acquire HP Services to assist in managing the center. This service complements HP’s U.S. Public Sector security consulting and security operations center service.

Proactively manage risk with intelligent security solutions
HP also unveiled new products and services to provide clients transparency and control over their entire organization. New offerings include:
HP Data Center Protection Services evaluate organizations’ existing security practices and provide actionable recommendations to help them optimize infrastructure and improve program management across the data center.
HP ArcSight Enterprise Security Manager 6.0c is a powerful, scalable security monitoring and compliance solution that identifies and remediates cyberthreats faster than ever before. HP ArcSight Enterprise Security Manager rapidly identifies security threats across an organization’s infrastructure and prioritizes critical issues to reduce potential damage.
HP TippingPoint NX Platform Next Generation Intrusion Prevention Systems (NGIPS) ensures protection across network devices, virtual machines, operating systems and business-critical applications by adding significant capacity for deep-packet traffic inspection. The new modular architecture is designed to adapt automatically to threats as they are discovered, while allowing organizations to save rack space and maintain consistent power consumption and cooling costs.

HP also announced a mobile application for IT security professionals that utilizes data from HP Digital Vaccine Labs (DVLabs) to monitor current and trending cyberthreats. HP Information Security Pulse, available at no additional cost, enables security professionals to rapidly determine and address risks that may affect their environment. The application is currently available for webOS, Apple iOS ®, Android™ and web browser platforms.

Protecting against printer-based intrusions
HP’s intelligent security solutions also extend to print environments. Offerings include:
HP Access Control (HP AC) Printing Solutions, expanded for the healthcare industry, enhance device security and improve companywide printing policies with secure authentication, secure pull printing, intelligent management and job accounting.
HP Imaging and Printing Security Assessment reviews the print environment from a security and compliance perspective, minimizing the risks of unattended documents, sensitive data processing from a computer to a printer, and confidential information on device hard drives.
Enhanced HP Imaging and Printing Security Center (IPSC), a policy-based solution, increases security automation while reducing risk through broader device and operating-system compatibility, expanded HP Instant-on Security device support and powerful password management capabilities.

HP also announced an industry first by surpassing 2.5 billion lines of code under subscription as part of its HP Fortify on Demand (FoD) application security Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) solution. HP Fortify leads the industry with the capability to harden the attack surface of applications with both static and dynamic application testing for 21 languages, more than any other vendor. Apple's iPhone Dethroned at the High-End in 2Q12 while Smartphones set to Surpass Feature Phones in Malaysia by 2014, says IDC

Kuala Lumpur, September 13, 2012 – According to IDC’s Asia/Pacific Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker, smartphones are set to represent 35% of the total mobile phone shipments in 2012, compared to 30% in 2011, and are forecasted to exceed 50% by 2014. IDC attributes the growth of smartphones in the nation to the increasing popularity of Android handsets and decreasing prices of entry-level smartphones.

Ryan Lai, Associate Market Analyst for Mobile Phone and Tablet research at IDC Asia/Pacific says, "In a segment previously dominated by Apple's iPhone, 2Q12 saw the iOS device dethroned as the king of high-end smartphones (more than RM1,500) for the first time since 2Q10 by Samsung’s Galaxy S III. The feat is even more significant considering that the Galaxy S III only arrived in the later part of 2Q12. However, Apple is set to rebound in the fourth quarter of 2012 when it releases its new iPhone in Malaysia."

HTC also experienced a breakout quarter in the smartphones segment, with its flagship model the One X placing third behind the iPhone. Overall, the high-end smartphone segment grew 33% in 2Q12 as compared to the same period last year and IDC expects the trend to continue into 2013.

Ryan adds, "We are witnessing a change in market dynamics. A growing number of Malaysian consumers now view Android smartphones to be as prestigious as the iPhone. Further growth in this segment will no longer be solely dependent on Apple, but will include Android vendors, mainly Samsung, HTC and Sony.”

Falling prices of entry-level smartphones are also eroding shipments of feature phones, particularly those priced above RM200. In the first half of 2012, 24% of smartphones shipments in Malaysia were priced below RM600, up from 14% in 2011. Ryan continues, "The main value proposition of a midrange feature phone is that you get smartphone-like features in a more affordable package. However, smartphone prices have fallen to such a point where many consumers themselves are asking why they would buy a smartphone-like device when with a little more money, they can get the real deal."

Companies are more concerned about their employees’ performance than IT security

PETALING JAYA, September 14, 2012 - Keeping employers off certain sites and blocking the launch of third-party applications are among the most popular ways of ensuring IT security, a survey has found. According to a study conducted by B2B International in July 2012, companies are most likely to restrict access to online games, with 71% of the IT professionals surveyed saying this was part of their strategy.

Slightly less popular methods include restricting or banning social networking sites – a measure mentioned by 68% of those surveyed. From this, it’s possible to conclude that IT specialists risk focusing more on employees’ performance, rather than infrastructure security.

The results also cover measures which are directly related to infrastructure security and data safety. For example, 50% of companies have restricted or prohibited the use of file exchange services, and 47% have enforced similar rules for connecting external devices to work computers.

More worryingly, though, 43% of IT specialists have already faced deliberate or accidental data leakage due to employee actions. This significant figure suggests there is insufficient control in terms of storing and communicating corporate information.

It’s important to remember that any bans or restrictions should be applied beyond workstations within the corporate network and cover other computers such as corporate laptops which can be connected to public Wi-Fi networks. Here, corporate security policies are ineffective and dedicated software is needed. Such solutions are available as part of Kaspersky Endpoint Security 8 for Windows. Its Web Control module allows system administrators to block or restrict access to certain websites, social services and online games.

They can be blocked automatically, or according to manually specified criteria or blacklists. Web Control makes it possible to introduce separate security policies for different user groups as well as flexibly restrict access to certain resources during work and non-work time.

“CA Infrastructure Management streamlines operations and improves efficiency by offering a single source of actionable insight for performance, availability, flow, capacity and application response, delivered through pre-defined dashboards that can be easily modified as needs change,” said Tony Testa, principal architect – Enterprise Management Services, CIBER, part of a community of more than 500 customers and partners that provided input during the solution’s development. “This frees IT teams to spend more time proactively managing the environment, rather than managing the process of extracting and gathering data from different tools.”

“CA Infrastructure Management enables MSPs to deliver differentiated services that sustain profitability and growth by supporting native multi-tenancy that drives economies of scale,” said Herman Van den Broeck, senior consultant, Simac ICT Belgium. “The intelligent solution captures and filters relevant performance data on behaviour that requires attention and then delivers comprehensive, contextual views in real-time. Both highly skilled and less experienced staff can absorb, understand and take appropriate action to help ensure end-users have a quality experience with the services.”

CA Services and CA Education support CA Infrastructure Management with implementation offerings including foundation services to rapidly deploy the solution to meet business requirements and acceleration services to extend the value of the foundation implementation with additional capabilities such as multi-tenancy support. Strategic consulting, managed services and instructor-led Web-based training for customers and partners are also available.

Symantec and Red Hat Announce Joint Solutions for Enhanced Reliability, Disaster Recovery and Performance

Companies Announce Expanded Collaboration in Malaysia

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – 14 September 2012 – Symantec Corp. (NASDAQ: SYMC) and Red Hat, Inc., (NYSE: RHT), today announced an extended collaboration to deliver solutions that help customers deploy agile private and hybrid clouds and create highly resilient datacenters. The expanded relationship spans engineering, marketing, support, and sales groups in both companies. Based on proven real-world deployments, the new solutions will harness the power of Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Symantec storage and availability solutions to deliver higher availability and increased agility while helping organisations deploy business-critical applications with confidence.

Many organisations are quickly adopting Linux as their platform of choice as they look for new ways to stay competitive in today’s market and face increasing costs with flat IT budgets. While the flexible nature of Red Hat Enterprise Linux has led to the solution becoming the strategic platform of choice for enterprise private cloud deployments, the need to ensure resiliency from a service level perspective becomes increasingly more important. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is deployed by more than 80 percent of the Fortune 500 while Symantec, as the industry leader in protecting business-critical applications, brings a robust suite of storage and availability management solutions to provide highly available multi-tier applications and business continuity across multiple storage platforms, operating systems and virtualisation platforms. Symantec’s storage and availability management solutions are used by 99 percent of the Fortune 500.

“Many organisations in Malaysia constantly need to do more with fewer resources, they often turn to adopting Linux to help deal with flat IT budgets and increasing costs. Red Hat Enterprise Linux is the fastest-growing platform for Symantec’s storage management and high availability software as an increasing number of customers are deploying Linux to increase agility and stay competitive,” said Alex Ong, country director of Symantec Malaysia. “Symantec is strengthening our partnership with Red Hat to ensure companies are confident that their information is protected as they modernise their data centers and build resilient private clouds.”

“Working closely together, Red Hat and Symantec offer joint customers tremendous value with an open source, secure pathway to modernize their legacy IT architectures,” said Damien Wong, General Manager, ASEAN at Red Hat. “We’re pleased to expand our long-term collaboration with Symantec across Thailand and bring our leading Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating platform and Symantec’s compelling technologies together to enable our joint customers with further choice and flexibility for their IT infrastructures.”

Al Gillen, vice president, system software, IDC, said, “As we’ve written previously, IDC believes Linux will be one of two primary operating systems that will power public cloud infrastructure. Symantec and Red Hat teaming to improve data availability and disaster recovery in data centers has the added benefit of bridging these datacenters to Linux-based cloud infrastructure, enabling today's enterprise customers to leverage cloud computing where it makes best sense."

Together, Symantec and Red Hat offer customers a unique opportunity to help manage mission-critical solutions applicable to cloud and datacenter deployments through delivery of a more flexible and open environment in terms of hardware, software and operating systems. The joint solutions will provide automated off-premise disaster recovery; improved storage management for multi-operating system, multi-storage datacenters; and cost-effective failover for Oracle databases.

Automated Off-Premise Disaster Recovery
Cluster Server running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides off-premise disaster recovery for organisations operating over long distances, automating global failover of multi-tiered applications to any disaster recovery (DR) site. In addition, Cluster Server manages the data replication layer and provides a single-click DR experience, enabling customers to simplify their DR workflow. The solution provides non-disruptive failover testing to ensure that recovery is configured to work properly when it is needed – whether the downtime is from power loss, natural disasters or other causes.

Improved Storage Management for Multi-OS, Multi-Storage Data Centers
As organisations purchase and implement storage solutions from multiple vendors, each point solution introduces operational complexity into the storage environment and often results in the lack of critical data availability across heterogeneous environments. Storage Foundation Dynamic Multi-Pathing running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux provides a uniform cross-platform solution that eases management across any OS and all storage platforms. With this solution, organisations have their choice of cost-effective storage and have the ability to negotiate better prices on storage hardware. In addition, hardware can be exchanged without disruption and without the installation of new point tools through a single unified data management platform.

Cost-Effective Failover for Oracle Databases
Many organisations rely on Oracle databases to increase productivity and enable users to make faster and more informed decisions. However, due to the high business dependence on these databases, downtime results in lost revenue, damaged brand reputation and severe penalties for not meeting service levels. Storage Foundation Cluster File System and Cluster Server running on Red Hat Enterprise Linux provide very fast Oracle database failover, enabling organisations to deploy less costly single-instance Oracle databases while achieving sub-minute failover times. In addition, Cluster Server can orchestrate multi-tiered application failover to simplify the management of complex real-world application environments and achieve true business service resiliency.

Technology from Symantec’s market-leading Cluster File System, Cluster Server and Storage Foundation, along with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, will form the basis for the joint architecture. Symantec and Red Hat will also team to provide additional engineering, marketing and support. More information on the new solutions will be made available at a later date.

Intel Labs Tunes into a Wireless Future Where Everything that Computes is Connected

KUALA LUMPUR, Sep. 14, 2012 – In his keynote today at the Intel Developer Forum, Intel Chief Technology Officer Justin Rattner  said, “In the future, if it computes, it connects. From the simplest embedded sensors to the most advanced cloud datacenters, we’re looking at techniques to allow all of them to connect without wires.”

Rattner demonstrated for the first time a working, all-digital WiFi radio, dubbed a “Moore’s Law Radio." The CTO explained that an all-digital radio follows Moore’s Law by scaling in area and energy efficiency with such digital chip processes as Intel’s latest 22nm tri-gate technology. System-on-chip designs for smartphones and tablet computers would be the most likely spot for the all digital radios to be integrated.

The small size and lower cost of integrated digital radios will enable a host of new applications from wearable devices to "The Internet of Things" where devices such as home appliances with sensors can communicate with each other, exchange data and can be operated remotely.

Rattner went on to describe a next-generation wireless standard called WiGig that operates in the millimeter wavelengths of the radio spectrum and delivers bandwidths well over 5 gigabits per second. The WiGig standard is an industry-wide effort to consolidate a number of proprietary 60 GHz wireless technologies under the existing WiFi standard.

“WiGig is so fast it will let you wirelessly dock your enabled Ultrabook™, tablet or smartphone without wires,” said Rattner. “Even multiple displays can be docked at one time.”

Delivering Convenience and Increasing Battery Life for Cloud Connected Devices
Users love the ability to receive email and social media updates while their devices are asleep. To bring this always on, always connected capability to the Ultrabook™ platform, Intel® Smart Connect technology currently wakes up the Ultrabook™ just long enough to receive the incoming packet traffic and then it goes back into standby mode to ensure long battery life.

Showing how the benefits of Smart Connect technology could be enhanced to include active operation for file transfer and video streaming, Rattner demonstrated “Spring Meadow,” which manages communication between the cloud and the device more intelligently. By pre-processing incoming network traffic and proactively managing traffic flow, “Spring Meadow” makes more efficient use of the host processor, allowing it to remain in a low-power state longer without impacting system performance.

Eliminating Passwords, Increasing Security
Passwords remain the common, yet inconvenient way of protecting access to valuable or sensitive information. In an effort to eliminate the need for passwords, Intel Labs has developed a replacement scheme called Client Based Authentication Technology. Not only does it replace passwords, it dramatically simplifies and accelerates the process for accessing bank accounts, stock portfolios and other cloud-based personal information.

The technology allows the user to authenticate once to the physical device such as an Ultrabook™ or smartphone using a biometric sensor and then lets the device automatically authenticate itself with one or more cloud-based services. Reading a person’s unique vein patterns in the palm of the hand, the user is then directly taken to his or her bank account, social network page or any kind of secure service. It also provides presence monitoring capability that locks the device and the secure service connection when the user puts his or her device down. A new biometric scan unlocks the platform and immediately restores the previous secure service connections. The whole process is virtually transparent, easy to use and more secure.

Cloud-Based Radio Access Networks, Future of Wireless Broadband
Rattner was joined onstage by Dr. Chih-Lin I, chief scientist at the China Mobile Research Institute in Beijing, to discuss the research collaboration between Intel Labs and China Mobile to design and prototype a full-scale Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN). C-Ran is an alternative to traditional RAN, which is the basis for modern cellular communications. Instead of simply moving the proprietary base station hardware to the data center, it is replaced by standard Intel-based servers running a software-defined radio application. Dr. I explained that C-RAN technology will dramatically reduce both capital and operational expenses for wireless service providers while providing superior levels of wireless services to users with fewer dropped connections during periods of peak demand.

Rattner described another research area, called a Video Aware Wireless Network (VAWN), where both service providers and end users will benefit from the latest wireless research. VAWN is the focus of a joint academic research program sponsored by Intel, Cisco and Verizon. With mobile video traffic expected to grow significantly over the next 5 years, according to Cisco Visual Networking Index, wireless networks could be constrained and video quality limited without new innovations. VAWN aims to increase the streaming video capacity of wireless networks while improving the viewing experience by optimizing network performance on an end-to-end basis.

Moola offers free shopping and convenience for shoppers via mobile app

Kuala Lumpur, 13 September 2012 –ICT Utopia Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of 1 Utopia Berhad, has launched “Moola” for shoppers at Plaza Low Yat today.  Moola, the first-ever Cash-Back Lifestyle Programme aims to elevate consumer’s shopping experience with never-ending rewards. This move is in response to consumer demands for lower prices, higher quality, better selection, and the ability to reach businesses through all possible channels anytime of the day. Unlike conventional rewards programme, Moola is an evolutionary mobile programme which runs on mobile app technology and QR code. This is specially designed with consumers’ convenience in mind whereby shoppers will get to enjoy free shopping and enjoy the best deals around without the hassle of cards in their wallet. The event was launched by Managing Director of 1 Utopia, Victor Chin, General Manager of Low Yat Group, Michael Lee together with the management team of ICT Utopia.

“Moola is more than just a loyalty programme in town. Moola is as cool as cash serves as an alternate payment for its members or Moola Frenz to pay in full or offset the purchase price instantly when they dine, shop for ICT products, travel, and even fashion within its network of Moola Shopz.  Moola indeed offers maximum convenience - the ability to pay for goods and services without cash, using what is arguably the consumer's most constant ‘companion', the smartphones! No lengthy process or plastic cards, just scan and you are done with the deal,” said Executive Director of 1 Utopia, Kenny Khow.

Moola is unique compared to others in the market as it offers flexible redemption at any Moola Shopz with the Moola earned and accumulated. Each purchase earns Moola, which can be used to dine at various restaurants and F&B outlets, shop for ICT products including travel and fashion. Moola keeps on rewarding shoppers with “FreeMakan” vouchers and greater deals as they utilise their earned Moola for greater savings and value for money.  Furthermore, Moola Frenz will get to enjoy free lifetime membership with no administrative charges or joining fee.

According to Kenny, “Compared to the traditional ‘linear’ shopping experience, Moola’s multi-channel commerce shopping experience benefit merchants by increasing impulse purchases with a knock-on effect on profit as Moola provides real time information to consumers about promotions and new products. Smart use of social media is another key aspect of Moola, as shopping decisions are heavily influenced by opinions via social media and online reviews. No business is immune from the mobile segment with massive consumer shifting to smartphones. Moola merchant affinity programme via customised mobile app technology will drive thousands of new customers to participating merchant stores while enhancing their sales, profitability and customer loyalty within the Moola Shopz network.

As many are aware, the mobile phone penetration rate in Malaysia has hit an overwhelming record of 127.7% and smartphone users’ penetration rate is expected to reach 80% by end of this year. In addition to that, in a study commissioned by PayPal, it was revealed that 642,770 Malaysians made a purchase with a mobile device in 2011, compared to 253,960 the previous year. Smartphone transactions were worth RM337 million, representing close to three quarters of the total mobile commerce market, compared to RM108 million through tablets. These figures augur well for Moola, and ICT Utopia is confident that Moola will attain 2 million memberships within a year from now.

ICT Utopia allocated RM1,500,000.00 on its A&P budget to build greater brand awareness of Moola. Currently, ICT Utopia has recruited 25 F&B merchants and 40 ICT retail merchants in Klang Valley and Plaza Low Yat, which will continue on to Northern and Southern region by early next year. ICT Utopia targets to recruit 650 mix merchants across the different business segments.  To date, ICT Utopia has rolled out social media, on-ground merchant activities, contest and soon radio to build greater Moola awareness.

Now, every Moola Frenz or Moola member will stand a chance to drive home a new 3 series BMW car as a grand prize. The nationwide contest is opened to all Moola Frenz who spends above RM500 per transaction at ICT Moola Shopz and RM50 at F&B Moola Shopz. All the participants need to do is to register the serial no of the contest form in their Moola app and mail the contest form to our service centre or drop it at a special box located at Plaza Low Yat.   Not only that, the top spender and top frequent spender will get a chance to walk away attractive prizes spanning from dining, ICT, fashion to travel in every quarter of the year towards the grand prize finale.

In conjunction with the Moola launch, Moola Frenz gets to enjoy free i-Milik service instead of paying RM10 per ICT product registration as non-member. Moola Frenz can register unlimited number of ICT products under i-Milik during this 6 months promotional period till end March 2013. i-Milik is a crime prevention system specially designed to protect and prevent the public from buying and possessing stolen ICT products.

The Group is confident that Moola will serve as a catalyst in the evolution of the Malaysian mobile lifestyle, and has set to achieve an internal target with gross profit of 7.2 million, 47.52 million and 138.24 million for the first three years of operations. 1 Utopia recently posted a Group’s revenue of RM265.0 million and profit of RM0.234 million for its half year financial performance ended 31 May 2012. The Group, formerly known as Tejari Technologies Berhad, has reinvented and diversified to two other lines of businesses; Technology and Creative apart from Engineering. The diversity through acquisitions of ICT technology companies has placed 1 Utopia in a more competitive position in terms of financial strength, stability and innovation capability. This was well reflected in the positive turnaround of the Group recent years, which reported a profit after tax of RM1.748 million in 2011 and RM0.948 million in 2010 respectively.
