Microsoft and MSC Malaysia to boost Cloud ecosystem for SMEs through the Azure Power Program

RM1.1 million injected to accelerate made-in-Malaysia software and services in the Cloud

Kuala Lumpur, 3 May 2012 – MDeC together with Microsoft Malaysia today announced their partnership in the MSC Malaysia Cloud On-Boarding Program to accelerate the development and production of made-in-Malaysia software and services in the Cloud, in response to the growing impetus to increase the competitiveness of Malaysian small-and-medium businesses (“SMEs”) through Cloud Computing adoption. The partnership, in the form of The Azure Power Program, will see an investment of RM1.1 million to boost the Cloud ecosystem for SMEs.

“As Malaysian companies prepare to engage and compete on a global level, they are also flocking to the Cloud for its advantages to scale on demand and achieve greater productivity. Research done by Forrester Consulting has found that 64 percent of Malaysian companies are either currently using or actively planning cloud initiatives. It is against this backdrop that MDeC welcomes Microsoft’s Azure Program as one of the key infrastructure partner into the MSC Malaysia Cloud Onboarding Program (COP). The core aim of the MSC Malaysia Cloud Onboarding Program is to prepare the Malaysian Cloud ecosystem by supporting the local software economy through enabling local independent software vendors (“ISVs”) with the skills, mindset and technology they need to provide world-class Cloud-powered software and services,” said Dato' Badlisham Ghazali, Chief Executive Officer of government ICT agency Multimedia Development Corporation (“MDeC”).Partnership for Azure Power Program - Datuk Badlisham Ghazali and Ananth Lazarus.

With this partnership, the Microsoft Azure Program will be a key industry partner in the MSC Malaysia Cloud Onboarding Program, designed to provide comprehensive end-to-end assistance for Malaysian ISVs to develop and produce Cloud-based software and services on Microsoft’s open and flexible Windows Azure platform. The Windows Azure platform allows developers to build applications using various programming languages that they are already familiar with, like Microsoft’s .Net and Visual Studio as well as Python, Ruby, Eclipse, Java, and PHP.

“Today, we take one more step forward in transforming Malaysia together. A thriving local software economy with flourishing Malaysian ISVs is another major component towards a technologically advanced, globally competitive, developed Malaysia by the year 2020. Microsoft is pleased to be able to contribute such best-in-class expertise, insight and technology to Malaysian ISVs and businesses to harness the power of the Cloud. In fact, only Microsoft has the experience, depth and breadth to assist Asian companies – from SMBs to large enterprises – in their journey to the Cloud,” declared Ananth Lazarus, Managing Director, Microsoft Malaysia.
Microsoft Azure Power Program ISVs.

The entire program comprises three steps. The first step of the program is known as the Cloud Onboarding Phase, which helps ISVs accelerate their transition to the Cloud-based business models along with comprehensive technical training and assistance.

“This first step is particularly important because most ISVs assume that providing Cloud services merely means putting applications and solutions on the web. However, there is more to that as ISVs need to undergo a fundamental paradigm shift towards a software-as-a-service (“SaaS”) business model, which has its own considerations for pricing, cost of ownership and value propositions. That is why this program goes beyond providing the technological infrastructure to also include business content training,” explained Ananth Lazarus.

Once ISVs have completed the first step, they move on to the next step called the SaaS Acceleration Phase, which is designed to reduce initial operation costs and risks. Here, ISVs can receive up to RM27,000 worth of subscription funding for Microsoft’s Windows Azure platform to develop their application and solution products. ISVs completing this second step will also receive product certification to help them establish credibility in preparation of going to market.

With products ready to market, ISVs will then be taken through the third step, called the Cloud to Market Phase, which seeks to assist ISVs in bringing their products to market. Here, ISVs will receive the necessary commercialization support to create visibility and to market their products on a local and global level.

Malaysian ISVs are quickly catching on to the business potential of Cloud-related services, which global market intelligence firm IDC estimates to be an RM138 billion (US$45 billion) industry by 2013. Gartner, another global industry analyst predicts that by 2012, 80% of Fortune 1000 enterprises will be using some Cloud Computing services while 20% of businesses will own no IT assets of their own.

Netster Consulting Group, a Malaysian ISV offering a Cloud-based Customer Relationship Management (CRM) Solution called Claritas CRM (www.claritascrm.com), concurs that the Azure Power Program will provide vital assistance towards preparing the local software economy for global competition. “When it comes to the Cloud, there are no real borders for competition – it’s the world wide web! The Azure Power Program will help provide the necessary business acumen and financial assistance that lowers the barriers of entry to the Cloud,” said Kelvin Leow its Executive Director.

The Azure Power Program is open to MSC Status companies all stages from start-ups to established ISVs. To participate, ISVs need to complete an application form with the necessary supporting documents to the Program Center at azurepower@crystaledge.net, call 03-6205 3389 or fax 03-6205 5513.

IBM study reveals critical shift in the role of Chief Information Security Executives globally

Analysis of 130+ interviews presents a new class of security chiefs; CISO role follows the evolution of CIO and CFO with more strategic organizational responsibilities

ARMONK, NY, 3 May 2012 – A new IBM (NYSE: IBM) study reveals a clear evolution in information security organizations and their leaders with 25 percent of security chiefs surveyed shifting from a technology focus to strategic business leadership role.

In IBM’s first study of senior security executives, its Center for Applied Insights interviewed more than 130 security leaders globally and discovered three types of leaders based on breach preparedness and overall security maturity. Representing about a quarter of those interviewed, the “Influencer” senior security executives typically influenced business strategies of their firms and were more confident and prepared than their peers — the “Protectors” and “Responders.”Overall, all security leaders today are under intense pressure, charged with protecting some of their firm’s most valuable assets – money, customer data, intellectual property and brand. Nearly two-thirds of Chief Information Security Executives (CISOs) surveyed say their senior executives are paying more attention to security today than they were two years ago, with a series of high-profile hacking and data breaches convincing them of the key role that security has to play in the modern enterprise.

More than half of respondents cited mobile security as a primary technology concern over the next two years. Nearly two-thirds of respondents expect information security spend to increase over the next two years and of those, 87 percent expect double-digit increases.
Rather than just reactively responding to security incidents, the CISO’s role is shifting more towards intelligent and holistic risk management — from fire-fighting to anticipating and mitigating fires before they start. Several characteristics emerged as notable features among the mature security practices of “Influencers” in a variety of organizations:

· Security seen as a business (versus technology) imperative: One of the chief attributes of a leading organization is having the attention of business leaders and their boards. Security is not an ad hoc topic, but rather a regular part of business discussions and, increasingly, the culture.

In fact, 60 percent of the advanced organizations named security as a regular boardroom topic, compared to only 22 percent of the least advanced organizations. These leaders understand the need for more pervasive risk awareness — and are far more focused on enterprise-wide education, collaboration and communications.

Forward-thinking security organizations are more likely to establish a security steering committee to encourage systemic approaches to security issues that span legal, business operations, finance, and human resources. Sixty-eight percent of advanced organizations had a risk committee, versus only 26 percent in the least advanced group.

· Use of data-driven decision making and measurement: Leading organizations are twice as likely to use metrics to monitor progress, the assessment showed (59 percent vs. 26 percent). Tracking user awareness, employee education, the ability to deal with future threats, and the integration of new technologies can help create a risk-aware culture. And automated monitoring of standardized metrics allows CISOs to dedicate more time to focusing on broader, more systemic risks.

· Shared budgetary responsibility with the C-suite: The assessment showed that within most organizations, CIOs typically have control over the information security budget. However, among highly ranked organizations, investment authority lies with business leaders more often. In the most advanced organizations, CEOs were just as likely as CIOs to be steering information security budgets. Lower ranking organizations often lacked a dedicated budget line item altogether, indicating a more tactical, fragmented approach to security. Seventy-one percent of advanced organizations had a dedicated security budget line item compared to 27 percent of the least mature group.

“This data painted a profile of a new class of CISO leaders who are developing a strategic voice, and paving the way to a more proactive and integrated stance on information security,” said David Jarvis, author of the report and senior consultant at the IBM Center for Applied Insights. “We see the path of the CISO is now maturing in a similar pattern to the CFO from the 1970s, the CIO from the 1980s — from a technical one to a strategic business enabler. This demonstrates how integral IT security has become to organizations.”

Recommendations to evolve the security role in an enterprise
To create a more confident and capable security organization, IBM recognizes that security leaders must construct an action plan based on their current capabilities and most pressing needs. The report offers prescriptive advice from its findings on how organizations can move forward based on their current maturity level.

For example, those “Responders” in the earliest stage of security maturity can move beyond their tactical focus by establishing a dedicated security leadership role (like a CISO); assembling a security and risk committee measuring progress; and automating routine security processes to devote more time and resources to security innovation.

“Security in a hyper-connected era presents a new set of challenges, but these can be greatly eased by implementing innovative practices and adopting a more integrated, holistic approach,” said Marc van Zadelhoff, an author of the report and vice president of Strategy, IBM Security Systems. “CISOs that prioritize these factors can help their organizations significantly improve business processes and achieve measurable success in their progress toward building a risk-aware culture that is agile and well-equipped to deal with future threats.”

About the Assessment
The IBM Center for Applied Insights study, “Finding a strategic voice: Insights from the 2012 IBM Chief Information Security Officer Assessment,” included organizations spanning a broad range of industries and seven countries. During the first quarter of 2012, the Center conducted double-blind interviews with 138 senior business and IT executives responsible for information security in their enterprises. Nearly 20 percent of the respondents lead information security in enterprises with more than 10,000 employees; 55 percent are in enterprises with 1,000 to 9,999 employees.

VMware Advances VMware View and End-User Computing Solutions for the Post-PC Era

Launch of Horizon Application Manager™ 1.5 and VMware Project Octopus Beta Provides an Easy and Secure Way for Employees to Access Applications, Share Data and Collaborate from Any Device

KUALA LUMPUR, May 3, 2012 — VMware, Inc. (NYSE: VMW), the global leader in virtualization and cloud infrastructure, today unveiled VMware View™ 5.1 and an updated portfolio of end-user computing solutions designed to empower a more agile, productive and connected enterprise.

“Customers are looking for solutions that break down current technology barriers and shift the focus to delivering services that can be accessed anywhere, on any device,” said Boaz Chalamish, senior vice president and general manager, End-User Computing, VMware. “VMware View™ 5.1 and our growing portfolio of personal cloud solutions will address the needs to simplify technology, manage more efficiently and better connect employees.”

The VMware end-user computing portfolio seeks to free employees and IT organizations from more than two decades of complex, device-centric computing, and delivers a more user-centric experience for the connected enterprise. In this new model, organizations leverage hybrid cloud resources – while maintaining a managed, secure environment – to provide new ways for employees to collaborate across applications and data from any device, where and when a user needs it.

“Today’s workforce is increasingly mobile and dispersed while the rise of new application types further diversifies the existing applications mix and ultimately using new and different devices to work,” said Laurence Si, Country General Manager, VMware Malaysia. “Add to this the ongoing pressures of budget, compliance, supporting the business and user satisfaction leaves IT stuck in a vicious cycle of perceived inefficiency, high risk, low value contribution and poor service. To evolve, IT must break the cycle and efficiently innovate and maintain while addressing the needs of the business and workforce. With today’s End User Computing Portfolio announcement, VMware is helping IT break down the current technology barriers and shift the focus to delivering services for business agility and workforce productivity.”

“As the reign of the personal computer as the sole corporate access device comes to a close, a new era is emerging,” said Stephen Kleynhans, research vice president, Gartner. “The personal cloud era provides users with a new level of flexibility with the devices they use for daily activities, while, at the same time, leveraging the strengths of each device. This flexibility will ultimately enable new levels of user satisfaction and productivity. However, it will require enterprises to fundamentally rethink how they deliver applications and services to users.”[1]

Your Personal Cloud: Enabling a New Way to Work

All built upon the foundation of VMware vSphere®, VMware is bringing to market a comprehensive portfolio of technologies that will help IT organizations empower a more agile, productive and connected enterprise:

VMware View 5.1: Simplifying the Delivery of a Better Desktop – VMware View 5.1 will continue to enable the industry’s best end-user experience while simplifying IT management for large-scale deployments and reducing the total cost of ownership (TCO) associated with a virtual desktop infrastructure by up to 50 percent. [2]

Reduced TCO – New storage capabilities in VMware View 5.1 enabled by VMware View Storage Accelerator will reduce shared storage costs by optimizing shared storage loads. A Tech Preview[3] of VMware View Composer Array Integration (VCAI) will leverage the native cloning abilities in the storage array to offload storage operations to improve provisioning speeds. In addition, VMware View Persona Management will extend to physical desktops, preserving user settings across all Windows devices and streamlining the migration from physical to stateless virtual desktops.

Simplified Management and Increased IT Control – Enhancements to VMware View 5.1 will enable IT organizations to streamline key IT processes such as provisioning, configuration management, connection brokering, policy enforcement, performance monitoring, and application assignment from a single management console. VMware View also enables IT organizations to increase security and compliance by moving data into the datacenter, centrally enforcing endpoint security and policy configuration and streamlining antivirus processes.

Industry’s Best Virtual Desktop Experience – VMware View 5.1 features a new USB stack that will improve device support, while integration of RADIUS two-factor authentication will provide users and organizations greater security choices. VMware View with PCoIP® adapts to the end user’s network connection to provide a high-quality, customized desktop experience over the LAN and WAN. Users can connect to their VMware View desktop from a variety of mobile and fixed endpoints with updated clients for Mac, Windows and Linux desktops, thin or zero clients, and Apple iPad, Android and Amazon Kindle Fire tablets.

VMware vCenter™ Operations for VMware View: Cloud Infrastructure Insight – To be offered as a new add-on to VMware View, VMware vCenter Operations for VMware View will enable administrators to have broad insight into desktop performance, quickly pinpoint and troubleshoot issues, optimize resource utilization, and proactively address potential issues in real time.

VMware Horizon Application Manager™: Your Personal Cloud Broker – To be offered as an on-premise virtual appliance, VMware Horizon Application Manager™ 1.5 is a centralized policy and entitlement engine that will broker user access to applications, virtual desktops and data resources. Integrating the application virtualization capabilities of VMware ThinApp®, the VMware Horizon Application Catalog will benefit both IT and end users by consolidating diverse application types into a single, unified catalog. In addition, the VMware Horizon Workspace delivers a simple, seamless end-user experience when accessing work resources across private and public clouds on whatever device a user chooses.

VMware Project Octopus: Your Personal Data Cloud – Available later this quarter as a beta for qualified customer trials, VMware Project Octopus will enable IT organizations to provide employees with an easy and secure way to share data and collaborate with anyone from any device. Deployed on-premise or accessed via a VMware service provider, VMware Project Octopus will provide the ability for IT administrators to govern usage and set policies for data access and sharing within their organization or with external contributors.

VMware Personal Cloud Applications: Share More, Send Less – Composed of VMware Zimbra® and VMware Socialcast®, VMware cloud applications connect employees to the knowledge, ideas, and resources they need to work smarter. As part of today’s announcement, VMware Zimbra 7.2 will support Secure/Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions (S/MIME) for government deployments requiring encryption.

SAP SME Summit 2012 showcases ICT Solutions for Malaysian Small Businesses

Helps SMEs improve operational performance, raise productivity and reduce costs, while continuing to drive growth and expansion into new markets

KUALA LUMPUR – May 3, 2012 – SAP, the world market and technology leader in business management software, showcased its 2011 business performance among Malaysian SMEs and outlined its solutions to help SMEs improve operational efficiencies and accelerate growth in today’s increasingly challenging global markets at the SAP SME Summit 2012 held at the InterContinental Kuala Lumpur.

More than 80 per cent of SAP’s 176,000 global customers are SMEs, 90 per cent of which are in the lower middle and small enterprise markets. In Malaysia, SAP is committed to supporting the goals of Malaysia’s Economic Transformation Plan (ETP) put forth by Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Seri Najib Tun Razak to help Malaysian businesses use ICT to transform the way they work and for Malaysian SMEs to succeed in growing their GDP contribution to 40 per cent by the year 2020.

Presently, SMEs make up over 98 per cent of businesses in Malaysia and in 2011 SMEs contribute about 31 per cent to GDP, 56 per cent to the workforce and account for 19 per cent of Malaysia’s total national exports.

Delivering the keynote address at the SAP SME Summit 2012 to executives from 150 top Malaysian SMEs, SMECorp CEO Dato’ Hafsah Hashim encouraged Malaysian SMEs of all sizes to seek out best in class ICT solutions to help them drive business success within and beyond Malaysia. “To successfully compete in the global economy it is critical that Malaysian businesses adopt ICT solutions to improve operational performance, raise productivity and reduce costs,” said Dato Hafsah. “SAP has a proven track record of helping Malaysian SMEs become best-run businesses with innovative ICT solutions that are now increasingly available on mobile devices like the iPad and through cost-effective cloud computing.”

SMEs are mostly owner-managed, entrepreneurial companies. And for many entrepreneurs, business information and decision support tools tend to be a combination of static historical reports, analysis spreadsheets and gut feel, which is fine while the SME is small and easily managed on this basis. However, as the business grows it needs to sustain its flexibility and agility in the face of stiffer competition and increasing volumes of information and regulation. Business software solutions are invaluable tools to help SMEs remain lean and efficient companies while supporting business growth with quick and accurate decision making.

Typically the barriers among SMEs to the adoption of business software solutions are cost and complexity. Costs include software and services, as well as people and time. The SME faces additional hurdles, such as tighter budgets, less sophistication and organizational knowledge, technology hurdles and fewer people, meaning less time to spend on planning and analysis. Consequently, the typical SME needs outside help defining critical success factors and the relevant metrics.

“SAP’s strategy to serve the SME market is to approach the market in the way that best addresses our customers’ needs and buying preferences,” said SAP Malaysia Managing Director Serene Sia. “By working with partners and an extended ecosystem, SAP is introducing alternative business software deployment, packaging and licensing options such as software-as-a-service, cloud computing and pre-built applications. These innovations give SMEs with limited in-house IT resources, to get an advanced ICT system up and running more quickly, with minimal cost, fuss and risk.”

Mobility

Among SAP’s goals is to bring mobility to the masses and one of the key objectives for SAP’s mobility strategy was to enable any size company to mobilize. To effectively serve SMEs this means delivering ready-to-use applications that address specific business needs.

In November 2011, SAP is showcased 50 business applications for SMEs at SAPPHIRENOW in Madrid. 20 of these applications were free and 11 came from SAP’s partner ecosystem.

SAP’s broad range of mobile business solutions for SMEs allows the companies to:

· Access and act on real-time business insights – anytime, anywhere

· Increase employee productivity and accelerate decision making

· Boost customer engagement, satisfaction, and responsiveness

· Develop innovative mobile applications that meet your business needs

Not only is SAP a proponent of mobility for the business, it is also an exponent of this approach. SAP ended 2011 having deployed 14,000 iPads to 53,000 employees scattered all over the world. That includes all of its salespeople, a high proportion of IT staffers and developers, as well as many managers and senior executives. SAP is the second-largest user of iPads in the world.

Rapid Deployment Solutions

SAP has also innovated in the way in which it delivers business software solutions to customers, particularly to SMEs. SAP’s Rapid Deployment Solutions (RDS) are a set of pre-configured, fixed price offerings with a well delineated scope that can be up and running in just 12 weeks. RDS are one of the best ways for SMEs to add analytics or CRM, extend their logistics or planning capabilities or start to automate collaborative processes with partners. Using RDS, SMEs can jump start their use of ICT to transform their business in a manner that is both pragmatic and cost-effective, and that allows them to achieve rapid time to value.

Today there are more than 50 RDS offerings in market, with more being rolled out each quarter. All RDS offerings are rigorously put through and internal SAP qualification process to ensure their stability, reliability and full integration with SAP’s broad portfolio of products before being delivered to customers by experienced partners within the SAP Ecosystem.

As their businesses grow, SMEs can then choose to extend their RDS deployments with comprehensive SAP solutions, thus preserving their investment and minimising the need to retrain personnel to use new tools.

Using SAP Rapid Deployment Solutions, companies can get SAP applications up and running in no time.
